HICCC Cancer Epidemiology Pilot Award 09/13-09/16 Title: DNA Methylation and Ovarian Cancer Risk in the Women’s Health Initiative PI: Jeanine Genkinger, PhD, MHS This pilot funding will examine differences in DNA methylation in the tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissue of ovarian cancer cases, the correlation between the measurement of DNA methylation in tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissue with measurement in plasma of ovarian cancer. Results from this pilot study will support a larger (R01) grant application where we will examine a larger sample of women with ovarian cancer. President’s Global Innovation Fund Pilot Proposal 05/16-06/16 Title: Building Cross-Sector Networks and Transdisciplinary Research to Promote Urban Health: A Partnership Spanning Columbia University’s Global Center, Brazil and the Mailman School of Public Health mPI: Jeanine Genkinger, PhD; Gina Lovasi, PhD This planning grant will be used to prepare for a larger R01 grant to develop models and implementation strategies to create sustainable and healthy cities by simultaneously examining food, sanitation, safety, public transport systems and working with local partners in Brazil. Scientific research is being conducted to examine links between common environmental pollutants (e.g., fuel burning, secondhand smoke, pesticides, chemicals in plastics, flame retardants, pest allergens, lead, mercury, and mold), other exposures (e.g., lifestyle and nutritional factors) and children’s health (e.g., asthma, mental and physical delay, attention and behavioral disorders, and cancer.

The Pooling Project pancreatic dataset includes 14 cohort studies from the US, Europe and Oceania. Adina has completed a one year postdoctoral fellowship with the Institute of Human Nutrition. During this year, Adina has published one methodological paper on validation of a food addiction scale. She has also submitted a publication to American Journal of Psychiatry examining food addiction with food intake in the Nurses’ Health Studies, in which I will be senior author. For the other manuscripts she is completing on food addiction, related to nutrient intake and depression, I will also be senior author. Adina has worked with the NYC Department of Health and currently works at Pfizer.

Jennifer Ferris, September 2012 – July 2018. Jennifer Ferris received an F31 grant for her dissertation aims under the direction of Dr. Mary Beth Terry and myself. Jennifer Ferris is finalizing her first two chapters of her dissertation (a systematic review on risk for two primary cancers – breast and ovarian cancer, and analysis of reproductive factors and risk of developing two primary cancers – breast and ovarian cancer), completing the analysis for the third chapter (epigenetic markers of ovarian and breast tumor tissue) and awaiting sample shipment for the fourth chapter to examine epigenetic markers in plasma and risk of ovarian cancer. For her manuscripts related to her dissertation, I will be the senior author.
