The purpose of uppiog scholastic rtxmirements would be to weed out those students who have no true seriousshyness of purpose in attending college We do not want a Duke full of bookworms drudging their college lives away we would insist however on a student body that has a purpose for coming to college that has set a goal for its collective self that is concentrating on attaining that goal
It is unfortunate perhaps that grades are the most reliable indicators of that seriousness of purpose because there is much that grades can never indicate But there must be a standard measure
We must not forget in indulging in these pipe-dream meditations of the Duke of the future that there is no idea more alien to the true meaning of education than this an educated man is one who has compiled a satisshyfactory scholastic average
We are proud to say that the men who have built Duke were not dedicated to this narrow concept Duke is not a school for brains and the educational process here is not universally one of fact-stuffing We have not venshytured whole-hog one way or the other in balancing studies with good times
It is our purpose in these post-war discussions to warn against a shift in either directionmdashtoward a football censhyter and country club with a college attachisd to the stadium or in the opposite toward a book-lined fact-mill where there is no other consideration than for the manushyfacture of pedantic degree-holders We must re-affirm that it is in the search for an harmonious balance beshytween these two concepts that Duke University will face a great post-war problem
Intolerant Critics The hullabaloo over rooms on East Campus has quieted
somewhat and we would be the last to stir up further controversy on an already annoying subject
This most recent wrangle however emphasizes again the tendency of students to criticize policies of adminisshytrators without due consideration of the administrative side of the picture It is all too easy to give vent to pent-up annoyance in intolerant castigation of one or more individuals

College students naturally find griping a pleasant pastime admittedly this pastime would be a difficult one to abandon Often the administration does not present a satisfactory explanation of reasons for its policies at other times it does not consider itself obligated to do so

nearly solved in the past two months than at any time
since the establishment of the V-12 program here

We pity the majority of brains who spent four years in a university plodding away ceaselessly taking little interest in campus activities haunting the libraries These men and women have not received an education when they complete their course they have only exshyperienced four years of drudgery
The purpose of uppiog scholastic rtxmirements would be to weed out those students who have no true seriousshyness of purpose in attending college We do not want a Duke full of bookworms drudging their college lives away we would insist however on a student body that has a purpose for coming to college that has set a goal for its collective self that is concentrating on attaining that goal
It is unfortunate perhaps that grades are the most reliable indicators of that seriousness of purpose because there is much that grades can never indicate But there must be a standard measure
We must not forget in indulging in these pipe-dream meditations of the Duke of the future that there is no idea more alien to the true meaning of education than this an educated man is one who has compiled a satisshyfactory scholastic average
We are proud to say that the men who have built Duke were not dedicated to this narrow concept Duke is not a school for brains and the educational process here is not universally one of fact-stuffing We have not venshytured whole-hog one way or the other in balancing studies with good times
It is our purpose in these post-war discussions to warn against a shift in either directionmdashtoward a football censhyter and country club with a college attachisd to the stadium or in the opposite toward a book-lined fact-mill where there is no other consideration than for the manushyfacture of pedantic degree-holders We must re-affirm that it is in the search for an harmonious balance beshytween these two concepts that Duke University will face a great post-war problem
Intolerant Critics The hullabaloo over rooms on East Campus has quieted
somewhat and we would be the last to stir up further controversy on an already annoying subject
This most recent wrangle however emphasizes again the tendency of students to criticize policies of adminisshytrators without due consideration of the administrative side of the picture It is all too easy to give vent to pent-up annoyance in intolerant castigation of one or more individuals
Such a tendency is evident in a majority of gripe sessions whether the topic be the rooming situation or food in the union
College students naturally find griping a pleasant pastime admittedly this pastime would be a difficult one to abandon Often the administration does not present a satisfactory explanation of reasons for its policies at other times it does not consider itself obligated to do so
If gripers do not have a sufficient background of facts at their disposal on which to base tolerant opinions it is equally true that unjustified criticismmdashfor the sake of pure criticismmdashis not an efficient method for encouragshying anyone to make the facts availablemdashH Y K
