There seems to be quite a bit of pent up demand for live World classes, something that Oracle hasn't offered for the last few years.

I didn't even want to ask about anything prior to A7.3. There are probably a few who are on A5.4, but heaven help anyone who is on A6.1. World customers, you know what I mean.

End user training.

answered questionskipped question

The first four answer options split the "configuration level training votes. If we had a do-over on this question I would have had "configuration level training" and "end user training" as the only two options. Followed by a more detailed question on each area.

JDE 2009 Training Survey Results

What is your biggest JDE training challenge?

Answer Options

Lack of configuration knowledge within our staff -- resulting in instability and additional cost/delays in implementing changes.

The lack of alternatives for JDE configuration training. Few classes are available.

The only formal training received was during the implementation phase: employee turnover, job reassignments, and time passing have resulted in knowledge being lost.

File structure, F01, F03, F04, F09, F42 basics. World Writer, FASTR. Versions, Data Selection, Processing options.

We have never had a budget for end user training, so that would be a good start. On site training with our data would probably be best. But since we have not had any formal training yet, I don't know how it could be improved.

Have basic JDE training classes as a requirement of the onboarding process. Instead of leaving training up to the department. Have more formal training plans.

I was going to check the response regarding implementation training but answer not sufficient. XYZ company implemented E1 here and not only did a poor job of training, but also a poor job at configurating. As new Business Systems Analyst here at ABC, I have my work cut out for me.In today's economic environment, expenditures of "green $" are not being alloted for end user training.

UPK is a great tool that we've used but it's expensive. Because we have custom mods and different configuration it's hard to outsource this piece.

We are a government entity, so training specific to those needs would be helpful. Also, users need to see the connection between JDE and their jobs more clearly.

Use something like UPK (User Productivity Kit) to record training on the process, explanation and operation in JDE to provide the training online.

If end user training is a hot button at your company, what do you think could be done to improve end user training?

26

27 Let people pick training specific to their job.28 Looking at on-line options, specialised key stakeholders, etc.29 We are looking at using UPK when we go to 9.0.30 Loving the UPK training tool.31

32 Increase Training classes availability.33

34 Internal management motivation.35 A more comprehensive and end-user friendly manual.36 It is very hard to say!37

38 This is a top level Executive/Manager buy-in issue.39 Improve business processes and then deliver process based training to end users.40

41 Special trainee programs, with supervision.42

43 We are able to handle that part well.44 On-line availability.45

46 Offer procurement training for 8.12.

Comments:

The ready availability of quick one-hour sessions on topics, that users can access on-line. Most users could use refresher courses from time to time, so breaking topics into beginner, intermediate, advanced courses would target the right audience.

We have so much customization in our environment that end user training needs to be done by the specific functional area that 'owns' the module.

Get some. Almost none of the end users who received any training at implementation are with the company today. Those that remain have had second-hand training at best or no training at worst and there is no budget for further training.

UPK is popular, but probably an expensive and time consuming solution for some companies. Quick reference cards, anyone?

The users need to understand what their actions actually do within the program. They have a very "I was told to click here and type in this and hit enter" mentality. They have no idea "what" they are doing, just where to put data.

Prepare comprehensive training material and introduce the business process combining with system operation by demonstration.

We write a lot of manuals ourselves but most of the time end users read them once and forget about them.

Actually, a management 'change of heart'. Training dollars always seem to be the first thing that gets cut during a budget crunch time.

22 Hands on training.

Hands on exercises. I would really like to see some way to augment the basic developer training I took with either short web seminars or a "cookbook" of tips and tricks (of course, both would be better).

The interaction of classmates. Discussing what has happened to them and the ways they have corrected issues or configured their systems.

Practical problem solving discussion; training on unused functionality in current modules or potential new modules; getting to know the trainer and trainees.

Interaction with an instructor who can answer questions and provide tips and helpful information.

A knowledgeable trainer whose is also a good teacher. Also, a trainer that can relate lots of relevant real life stories or examples of what is being taught.

Using real world scenarios is always something that interests me, because I know there may be more opportunity to apply it.

The instructor must be able to relate real world experience and business processes to how JD Edwards "does it". He/she must also be able to come up with creative ideas on how to solve "non-standard" business practices in JDE without modifying the system.

1) Experience of teacher. 2) Usability of facility resources (minimize downtime from technical problems).

Implementation experience by the instructor - knowing when/why to use feature x over option y.

Hands on training generally works best for me however, it would be nice to have a less expensive option like online classes available.

Real time scenarios in exercises, updated courseware with comprehensive examples, and most important - a trainer with very good knowledge and open to share knowledge, and last but not least training should be cost effective. Am I asking for a lot? ;)

When the instructor has real world experience it makes all the difference in what you take away from the class.

45 Hands on and a view of the subject as a user.46 Quality instructor and relevant materials.

Making the training applicable to the "real world" - all JDEtips instructors have had previous access to our system, and have created examples for class using our data.

Onsite training with a consultant might allow us to use our own data and direct the discussion to areas of the software we may be having problems with or areas we would like to utilize more more fully.

Learn something that you cannot obtain easily from other sources. One example is to get the comprehensive understanding and skills about all G/L configurations in a G/L training course. We can grasp something by self-learning, by experiencing projects. But if a training course can cover all the important parts of G/L the course must be great. Many of the trainees already have some experiences in JDE and they are looking for something they do not know or are not familiar. How can I be called an expert, what are missing in my skill set? ---- that is the question I ask my self. I participated in one G/L Mastery Level G/L training but unfortunately the course did not cover some key areas like tax, foreign currency, AAI setup. To be frank, JDE is really a good software which is easy to maintain. This allows a person to be knowledgeable enough to cover more than one module, or one area in order to be a master. That might be the reason why number of JDE training courses is much smaller than for other products. So we should have the possibility to make our training master-level if we design the course carefully. This survey is a good sign and I hope to work together with you and better our JDE

Enhancing knowledge -- I would not want to spend the time and money on a course that was too advanced or too beginner level.

The most important aspect of JDE training is meeting the challenge of low cost, expedient, easily available, and easy comprehension for those of our users with limited learning skills. The most important attribute in making a class memorable is providing world class printed training manuals for students to refer to for months and years after they have completed training.

Knowledgable instructor with excellent communications skills, hands on experience, comprehensive take home training material.

Addressing real world scenarios and participating in a class where the students are from similar industries.

Solving real problems. Having participants and instructors that have real experience and aren't just new to the software.

Qualified personnel, our instructor had a lot of field expertise that was shared with the class and he tried to understand the needs of each member of the class.

Having the ability to discuss how the functionality is/can be used to address specific business issues.

77 Good speakers, and nice facility.

Go to the bottom of the training. In distribution make the bridge to finance. This is what I miss in most courses. I followed the sales order entry course but invoicing, sales update, edi all were missing. Manufacturing 1 was for me a missed opportunity because it was more procurement, inventory, ... I missed BOM, Routings, MRP and Planning in depth. Hopefully these will be handled in depth in Manufacturing 2.

A trainer with THOROUGH WORKING knowledge of not only how an application is to be used but how it interacts with other applications.

Interactive environment. Collective retention is better than singular retention when groups are trained.

Hands on, process based training using an in-house data set that students can relate to. Follow up training in 4 - 6 weeks to correct and fine tune.

For on-site training, working with the trainer ahead of time so that we can have the training tailored to us. We have been on JDE a number of years so we usually need advanced help.

The documentation. I have referenced my JDEtips University manuals on numerous occasions. The instructors ability to connect the functionality of JDE to real world application even down to a specific student's business issue is also important. May I just state that Jane Perry is a master?!Teaching at a level just above the current knowledge of students so that there are a lot of take-aways.

That mix between theoretical and practical. Being able to link the theory to real life examples and see where the application can be made / improved / etc.

Hands on training exercises and interaction between instructor and students and instruction manuals that are clear and easily to follow step by step guidelines.

Being able to appreciate the program and put the learned experiences to real work use. Be able to know the strengths and weaknesses of the system.

Instructors bring "life" to the training as well as the fact that they have actually used the software and are a source of great information.

Application to real life and clear answers to your questions with a good understanding of my situation.

15

78

79

80 Personalization. Linking to our organization and bringing in applicable scenarios.81 Hands on experience during the class.82

83 Learning the things that aren't in the JDE documentation.84

86 Yes.87 Instuctuors that apply the class to the students actual situation.88 Cost and knowledge.89 Practical application of what is learned, i.e., useful exercises.90 It is completely away from everyday work plus the professionl training received.

Comments:

The instructor's ability to focus on practical, real-world implementation issues is critical.

Hands on exercises

Want to see tips, advanced techniques, undocumented features.

Focus on how the module interacts with other JDE applications, particularly the bridge from Distribution/Manufacturing modules to the Financial area.

I'm happy to see these comments--they reveal that we are on the right track with our classes and that we need to keep our eye on these points.

Note: I did not edit out any of the negative comments--they are all there to remind us thatwe still have the challenge to constantly improve our training.

Hands on training is what would benefit my staff. We use train the trainer so the more hands on knowledge my staff has then they can relay that to the end users.

The ability to ask specific questions relating to our business and having an instructor who is capable of answering those questions.

Training other than just the basic to intermediate training. Our developers know the basics and the intermediate for coding in JDE. What would help is some deeper training in some of the additional tools.

Summary of key points:The quality of the instructor is the single most important factor in predicting a successful class.

Students want to deal with their unique issues, as well as learn all the functionality of the JDE modules.

A presentation that is clear in its delivery, peppered with examples and a little humour. A very important part is giving the class attendees some notes to which they can easily refer back and recall some of the things the instructor spoke of. For most people, a big manual that did not follow the flow of the class won't be of much use.The instructor was very knowledgeable of the material and could convey in to our specific manufacturing situations.

Need to continue training for A7.3!!! Many companies refuse or just can't afford to upgrade. Also continue RPG programming...the RPG programmer is a dying breed and this is no longer taught anywhere.

Classes conducted in a World environment and geared for users would be great. IT just doesn't have time to train users on how to do their jobs because they don't understand system functionality. You won't convince a client in a salespitch because it is consiedered basic. EDI is also a point that is becoming increasingly important and where it is hard to find info on.

There seems to be a shortage of JD Edwards self study or e-learning programs available. In South Africa cost is a big factor when it comes to training (exchange rates) and individuals like myself find it extremely difficult to pay for JD Edwards courses out of our own pockets. Why are there no self study options available like those offered by Oracle and or Siebel.I believe the most critical aspect of training and even of daily usage of JDE is the training/end user manual. Proper documentation is very important and also rather rare.

27 JDEtips needs to offer more CNC type training, not just on the applications.28

As much as you can, please try to keep the costs of the training courses as low as possible. By making the courses more affordable, more people will be willing to take them.

Would like to see a class for developers who have a good knowledge in older tools releases, e.g., E811 tools 8.97 and just the differences and new things in E 9.0 and tools 8.98. Could also be a pre-recorded web based class.

Comments:

CNC training is available at customer locations.

We will create an HR/Payroll course that we can give in a public setting. Currently, we give these classes at customer sites only.

Warehouse Management, Transportation, Real Estate, Homebuilder typically do not have enough users to fill a public class, however we do offer all these classes at customer sites.

CNC training is available at customer locations. We are doing our best to keep the cost of training affordable--we're currently running a 3 for 2 promotion (3 seats for the price of 2), and we'll be offering to pick up the instructor's travel cost for onsite training.

As mentioned on a previous page, we are working with Oracle to obtain permission to offer public World classes. We currently teach all World subjects at customer locations.

We have a lot to do--more classes to create, including virtual, online classes--all in the context of a challenging economic environment.

Thank you for your participation in the 2009 JD Edwards training poll.

If we can provide assistance with either end user or configuration level training, please feel free to contact:
