I. JD730 SERIES POWER SENSORS

The JD730 Series power sensors consist of Terminating or Directional power sensors types that

can be used for any power measurement application.

The JD730 power sensors are portable for field applications and can interface with a PC or any

JDSU’s instrument.

The Directional Power Sensors (JD731A, JD733A) are used to measure forward power and

reflected power without having any service disturbance. Typical applications are for installation,

maintenance, and monitoring of transmitters with antenna in wireless base station.

The Terminating Power Sensor (JD732A, JD734A, JD736A) is used to measure power for

installation, and maintenance of base station in wireless and RF generators or repeaters.

While conventional power sensors can be used in conjunction with additional power meters, The

JD730 power sensors are small and lightweight making the optimal portable solutions for field

applications, together with the benefit of communicating with a PC or a JDSU's instrument.

II. JD730 SERIES POWER SENSORS HIGHLIGHTS

Optimal Power Testing

The JD730 power sensors offer the optimal power testing solutions since it performs the power

measurement without the need of additional test instruments, using a PC to present measurement

results.

Field Test Solution

The JD730 power sensors are the ideal field test solutions due to its compact size, lightweight and

ability to operate with a laptop computer in standalone mode or with JDSU’s field instruments.

Making the JD730 power sensors the optimal solutions for installation and maintenance of

modern wireless and RF base stations.

No Zeroing Calibration

The JD730 power sensors are not required to get disconnected or to power it down for zeroing

calibration. The power sensors do not need any additional calibration beyond the factory’s

calibration which ensures measurement accuracy.

Measurement Methodologies

The JD730 power sensors have two different measurement methodologies, terminating for out-of-

service applications and directional for in-service applications.

III. DIRECTIONAL POWER SENSORS JD731A, JD733A

Directional power sensors are connected between the transmitter and the transmission line

measuring the following power metrics without any service disturbance ideal for in-field monitoring

and maintenance of wireless bases station.

This power metric provides an average power value for modulated, non-modulated or multi-

carriers signals.

Peak Power (Peak Envelope Power)

This power metric provides peak power values of the modulated envelope, indicating the

maximum signal’s power.

VSWR or Return Loss

This power metric provides forward and reverse average power ratios for matching characteristics

of loads. This metric is presented as VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) or Return Loss.

IV. TERMINATING POWER SENSOR JD732A, JD734A, JD736A

This power sensor measures the true RMS power from -30dBm to +20dBm in a terminating mode,

where all the power is absorbed by the power sensor.

This is a typical power measurement methodology for out-of-service applications including

engineering, laboratory, and manufacturing, as well as installation and maintenance.

I. PC APPLICATION SOFTWARE, JDPOWERMETER

The JDPowerMeter (JDPM) program provides stand alone power measurement captured from the

JD730 Series Power Sensors. JDPM runs on personal computers (PC) with Windows XP

environment.

With JDPM, you can perform these tasks:

Perform live power measurement

Display/Analyze saved data from JDSU JD730 Series Power Sensors

Save measurement data as a history data files ("*.psh" File)

Compare sets of two and three measurement items with single display window

Change display mode, AVG, PEAK and VSWR (JD731A, JD733A Only)

Adjust maximum and minimum limits

Zoom into a specific window of a measurement for a closer look

Display measurement history in History Graph

II. SUPPORTED MODELS

The JDPM supports the following models:

JDSU’s JD730 Series Power Sensors, JD731A, JD732A , JD733A, JD734A and JD736A

III. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Supported operating systems:

CPU: 450 MHz or higher

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional or Home edition, service pack 1 or

later, or Windows® Vista 32Bit

Monitor: SVGA (800 * 600 or greater) 256 colors

System memory: 128 MB or higher

Minimum space : 10 MB or more

IV. INSTALLATION

Use the following instructions to install a new JDPM software or to upgrade from a previous

version. The installation procedure is as follows,

1. Start the installation

If you purchased Power Sensors, insert the JDPM Application Program CD.

JDSU recommends that you back up your download package, preferably to a CD before

installing the software. When ready to install, double-click the installation file to start the

installation.

Double-click Setup.exe file.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions and select a language, then click OK.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions and then select Next.

4. Select the folder where the software is to be installed, then click Install to complete the

installation.

5. Now the JDPowerMeter software has successfully installed.

V. UNINSTALL JDPOWERMETER

1. Launch the Control Panel and select Add or Remove Programs.

2. From the application's list, highlight JDPowerMeter and select the change/Remove button.

3. On the JDPowerMeter Un-installation dialog select the Yes button to remove JDPowerMeter.

4. Please note that “JDPowerMeter” folder will have to be removed separately from your PC.

VI. INSTALL USB DRIVER

The JD730 Series power sensors have a USB communication port. In order to use the USB

communication, the USB driver should be installed into the PC.

Before installing the USB Driver, please verify the following:

The required Operating System should be Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional or Home

edition, service pack 1 or later, or Windows® Vista 32Bit

The JDPowerMeter Application Software must be installed in advance in the PC.

Installation Procedure

1. Connect the Power sensor to the PC using the USB cable.

2. At the first dialog window, select ‘No, not this time’ option button when prompted to connect to

Windows Update.

3. At the next dialog window, select “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)”.

4. Browse to the location of the USB drivers on the system (select folder by OS type). Using

the example above that would be C:\Program Files\JDPowerMeter\Driver. Then click “Next”.

5. A warning that Windows cannot verify that the device is compatible with the hardware will

appear. Then click “Continue Anyway”.

6. At the next dialog, browse again to the location of the USB drivers on the system. Using the

example above that would be C:\Program Files\JDPowerMeter\Driver. And click “Open” then

press “OK” will complete the installation.

7. Select “Finish” to finish the installation.

Connect Device: Connects the device for the measurement, you can select either RS-232

Serial port or USB port to communicate with the device.

Open File: Opens previous history graph file (*,psh) saved on the PC.

Close: Closes current measurement window.

Save: Saves current measurement data into *psh format into the PC.

Exit: Exits JDPM program.

2. Device

Start: Starts the measurement. It is required first to establish communication with the power

sensor through the "Setting" menu.

Stop: Stops the measurement.

Reset: Resets current measurement and clears previous measurement history.

Mode: Selects display modes either “Relative” or “Absolute”.

- If it is set to Relative, the measurement is made relative to the reference level you

set and the results are displayed in dB.

- If it is set to Absolute, all the power values of the measurement indicated with

absolute power in dBm and microWatts.

Limit: Enables or disables maximum and minimum limits and Turns Alarm On and Off.

Setting: Configures the device and measurement conditions.

Device Information: Once connection has been made with the JD730 series power sensors,

JDPM retrieves the following information.

- Model: Model Number of connected power sensor

- S/N: Serial Number

- Ver: Instrument’s firmware version

Measurement Variables: Sets measurement parameters, frequency, external offsets, and

types of display modes, absolute or relative settings.

- Frequency: Frequency to be measured

- Ext. Offset: Sets an external offset value. An offset consists of a cable offset and a

user offset, and the measurement result shows the value reflecting both offsets.

Mode: Selects display modes either “Relative” or “Absolute”.

- If it is set to Relative, the measurement is made relative to the reference level you

set and the results are displayed in dB.

- If it is set to Absolute, all the power values of the measurement are absolute and

indicated with dBm or microWatts units.

Display Range: Sets display range, you can change display range separately in each

measurement windows.

Limit: Sets maximum and minimum limits, you can change limit range separately in each

measurement windows, once the limit lines are enabled, an audible alarm will be generated

by the PC if the measured value exceeds the defined limits.

Enter “OK” if all the changes are done, or press “Cancel” to exit without saving changes.

3. View: Selects the display type between, Full screen or Multi-screen. Also it can be shown the

toolbar and status bar on the Main windows.

4. Window: Fit the measurement screens into the Window.

Cascade - Fit multiple plots cascaded on one page.

Tile Horizontally - Fit multiple plots horizontally on one page.

Tile Vertically - Fit multiple plots vertically on one page.

1 USB, JD731A - Provide the information of the power sensor that is currently connected to

the JDPowerMeter program (auto-display).

5. Help: Display Help menu and shows up information of the program.

JDPowerMeter software has various functionalities, which can be utilized by doing a right-click on

the mouse.

V. SETTING THE MOST INTERESTING ITEM AS DEFAULT

(JD731A, JD733A ONLY)

There are four different windows on the JDPowerMeter software. You can easily change or

display the most interesting items by selecting “Set as default” from doing a right-click on the

mouse onto the selected window.

VI. ZOOM IN If you want to zoom one of the item among 4 windows, select “Full screen” from doing a right-click

on the mouse while the cursor locates on the window you want to zoom.

VII. SHOWING HISTORY GRAPH By selecting “History Graph”, the history graph appears at the bottom of the measurement window.

Once you activate the history graph, you can save the measurement data as a history file (*.psh)

into the PC.

VIII. HOW TO RECALL PREVIOUS HISTORY GRAPH The use of the open history file allows you to analyze the previous save measurement history.

The following describes the steps to open saved history file (*.psh) from your PC.

3. By selecting “Open”, the previous history file will be loaded

I. POWER METER INTRODUCTION

The JD730 power sensors are small and lightweight making the optimal portable solutions for field

applications, together with the benefit of being powered via JDSU’s instruments. The JD730

series supports following JDSU’s instruments.

JD7105A Base Station Analyzer

JD7106A RF Analyzer

JD723A Cable and Antenna Analyzer

JD724B Cable and Antenna Analyzer

JD725A Cable and Antenna Analyzer

In this example, the JD725A Cable and Antenna Analyzer is used.

II. CONNECTING SENSORS

Selecting the Power Meter function after powering up the instrument will display the Power Meter

measurement screen with the message that “NO SENSOR” is connected. Connect a power

sensor to the RS-232C or USB port of the instrument using the provided cable as shown in the

following figure. Do not connect a power sensor directly to the LPA or HPA.

After connecting a power sensor, select the Initialize screen menu key for the instrument to

recognize the sensor. After successful recognition of the power sensor, the sensor type is

displayed on the screen as shown in the following figure.

No sensor type is displayed on the screen if the instrument is not able to recognize a sensor type

during the initialization process.

III. MAKING POWER MEASUREMENT

After the power sensor connection and initialization, connect the power sensor to the output port.

Do not connect the Terminating type of power sensor directly to the output of the HPA. The

power sensor will be damaged if it receives a power level greater than +20dBm.

Setting Power Meter

All the keys used to set the power measurement are displayed as screen menu keys. No hard

keys on the front panel are used. The following is a description of the screen menu and its

functions:

Power Sensor Info: Types of power sensor connected, Terminating or Directional, and its

Model Information.

Screen Display:

Measurement Type: Current measurement type information, AVG or PEAK.

Measurement Mode: Display current measurement mode, Relative or Absolute.

Current Measurement: Display current measured value.

Min/Max Info: Display Min and Max value of the measurement.

Frequency & Offset: Display current frequency setting and External offset setting

information.

Initialize: Initializes the power sensor and downloads the calibration data from the sensor.

Screen Menu:

Frequency: Sets the frequency of signals to measure. As the frequency setting affects the

calibration data, be sure to set the accurate center frequency for reliable measurement

results.

Display Setup: Sets the following items.

- Sets Display Value in Absolute or Relative

- Sets Reference Level to be used in Relative display mode

- Sets Display Minimum and Maximum Range

- Setting External Offset (Enters the value of Gain or Loss when an attenuator or an

amplifier is used before the power sensor. As the default setting is Loss, enter the level

of Loss in positive values when an attenuator is used and in negative values when an

amplifier is used)

Reset: Clears all user settings and returns to the factory settings.
