How did you become congress director?Chris: Actually I wanted to stay out of it. But in February I have decided the time has come when a call came again. What is your motivation to work on the world congress?Rolf: To make this JCI World Congress a big successChris: schließe ich mich diplomatisch an. Meine bleibt eher ungedruckt…What is your motto leading a team that comes from all over Germany?Rolf: Let everyone blossom and shineChris: Who does good work gets responsibili-ty, should get involved and owns the stageDo you have a speacial leadership style? Rolf:transparency and trustChris: Don’t talk, do itWhy should JCI members come to Leipzig?Rolf: So that the UK can beat Germany at soccerTim: To enjoy the JCI parts of the congress as well as the German events like company visits, famous touristic highlights, trips to cities near-by and great key notes.Chris: … and to be part of a historical JCI con-gress in the 25th anniversary of fall of Berlin WallCan you tell us a highlight? Maybe a special guest?Rolf: JCI UK National President Kate SenterTim: Sorry Rolf that is a bit too much sucking up – I would say the keynote from Felix Fink-beiner, the founder of Plant the planetWhat is a programme point that you are looking forward to?Rolf: Each and every new JCI active citizen, who finds the time to lead a project and at the same time has responsibility for employees and revenue in his or her own firmWhat is/was the biggest challenge in or-ganising the conference?

Rolf: The short time frame since takeover in February 2014How would you describe international JCI conferences in three words? And why are they worth their money? Rolf: Meet Interesting JayCees – the jaycees, who are attending conferences or the world congress, are typically the most engaged and most successful members. I am constantly able to learn a lot from their experiences – in projects, in their business or in their family. Also, I made a lot of good friends all over the world. How many confernces have you been to?Rolf: Many, the most recent international con-ferences/congresses: 2011 JCI World Con-gress Brussels, 2012 World Congress Taipeh, 2013 JCI European Conference Monaco, 2014 European Conference MaltaTim: ASPAC Yamagata, WC Rio 2013Chris: … and also some more in the past European Congresses in Lausanne, Turku, Budapest, Arhus and so on and surely in two other great European World Congresses in Vienna in 2005 and in Antalya in 2007) .If you really ask for all conferences, also the national ones, the short answer is about 50.What was, up to now, your favorite and what made it special?Rolf: All of them – the main thing ist o meet interesting friends.Chris: … each world congress has its own highlights and cannot really be compared. The diversity and the people make it out. Looking back, I found purely by the Conference Vienna an unattainable congress. Why and how is Leipzig going to be better?Rolf: We will simply do our very best! Tim: enjoy the region of Leipzig as well as a great Bavarian Oktoberfest Chris: … the people makes it! It will be de-cided by your participation. Leipzig must not be better, but will continue great conferences in its own way. Be part of it!

- Catching Fire

The Phoenix Tale explores the greatness of us as individuals. Adapting the mystical tale of the Phoenix beign forged and reborn through fire. When there is nothing but ashes and the mystical bird still re-emerges as part of its life - starting anew.

The tale is true in our times as well. We as indivuduals are forged by the fire of our everyday life and the challenges we face. It is about how we face these challenges and how we learn from bad situations to be better in the future.

It is also true for Canary Wharf as the area has risen from the ashes of the war and became a new hub for development and a new aera inLondon. After the crisis it is now slowly and stead-ily getting back to its feet from the economic collapse - the tale of rebith is a conitus journey in life.

FACTS ALERT! DID YOU KNOW The Canary Wharf Group, owners and developer of over 100acres of what is now known as world acclaimed Business District have developed more properties than any other developer in London and are resident in One Canada Square. Members of JCIUK National Convention planning commit-tee had a meeting recently to form strategic partnership (guess who the two members are from the pointing fingers) - Canary Wharf Tower (now known as One Canada Square) was built in 1990. At 800ft (243m) the pyramid-topped steel tower was the tallest building in Europe until the completion of the Messeturm in Frankfurt, Germany that same year.

T E D x s q u a r e m i l eFor the thrid year in a row the amazing, breathtaking and inspiring event is SOLD OUT - What‘s the serect?The power of TED

TED is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, under the slogan: “Ideas Worth Spreading”. TED was founded in 1984 as a one-off event. The annual conference began in 1990, in Monterey, California.

What is TEDx then?

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED‘s mission, „ideas worth spreading.“ It supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community.

At TEDx events, a screening of TED Talks videos — or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos — sparks deep conversation and connections at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, under a free license granted by TED.

TEDx & JCI London = TEDxSquareMile

This equation is what makes the event so successful and a highly rewarding yet challen-ging task. It is about finding the right theme like this year‘s POWER OF PURPOSE, getting the right team, location and the right speakers - who will speak at the event and make it inte-resting, inspiring and yet will be available.

A TEDxSquareMile event takes months to or-ganize and everything has to work together for it to sell out and have a full house of peop-le. Yet, up to now JCI London has succeeded

every year.

Is there a guarantee now that it will go on like this? No, never, you never have this guarantee for success and each year has to be just as good, if not better than the last. We have to stri-ve to make it as grant as we can manage and get the right people together, which means that TEDxSquareMile has a special status. Not all team members that work on the project are JCI London members - of course some are and the organizer him/herself is also a member BUT not everyone has to be to get involved.

Why? Well, you need to get the best people that are willing to invest a lot of energy and time into the project. In 2013 for example for a lot of team members of TEDx that were not JCI Lon-don members it was a great way to get to know JCI and what the organization is all about. It is the gateway into JCI for some.

TEDxSquareMile The Power of Purpose

Mandela. Lincoln. Napoleon. Many great minds have overcome cri-ticism to create something great. Many of us forget what life would have been like if those great minds didn’t follow through with their pas-sion and dream, and many of us forget what life would be like if the

same doesn’t continue in the future.

The Purpose of Life has been the topic of so many philosophical debates, that we wanted to shape our event around it. We want those in the audience and speakers to unravel what they feel is purposeful, weather it is growth, empowerment, changing lives of people they may never meet, staying true to intrinsic values or even just fulfilling ones goals.

Aming high and meeting that goal

We equally delve into Power and the importance it has in this world across communication, land, energy, the me-dia and travel. How does music and film play such a powerful role in purpo-se within our lives today? These ques-tioned, pinned against different regions but mainly the community in London, can look into the value that these huge powerful industries plays in shaping our worlds, and how it can play in the future. Most importantly, we explore how these two topics are interlinked.

From our event this November we ex-pect there will be a fantastic array of emotions and thoughts off the back of the event. Some people being able to make direct relation to those they see speak, as well as many being able to gain new insights that’s will significantly change your view on how you now will see the world. We hope the event will bring an opportunity to meet some other unique individuals, for you to meet gre-at moments of pleasure, joy, inspiration and most importantly, the motivation to do something great.

LeadershipW h y t a k e o n a r o l e w i t h i n J C I ?

by Svenja Koeppe

Thinking about taking on a role within JCI is the first step but really following though is a differ-ent thing - the facts are that you will spend a lot of time on that role and to make the chamber run smoothly. Another one is that you will be a leader - yes I said it a leader.

You will be in charge and you will probably get a team together to tackle the different projects and ideas that you have in you mind and that maybe they want to tackle too.

I will not lie to you and say that it will be an easy time but let me tell you something it will be a time that you will never forget. It is a time in which you grow as a person and you will see what you can achieve. It is also a time for team work because one thing is for sure you are nev-er left alone if you feel you need help, advice or anything that might be wrong you always have people you can count on! The council team is not only there for the members but you as a team have to work together.

Maybe for some thing you will step out of your comfort zone but in the end you will grow as a person and you will be ready to do so much with the knowledge and the experiences you have gained within JCI.

It is what the organization is about and let me tell you being part of the JCI leadership team will get you fired up for more - outside and in-side the organization.

You can never be 100% prepared for the role you take on and maybe it would be fun to try out a role that you are not as familiar with - you do not have to take on the marketing director role just because you work in marketing. Sure it will be easier for you but you can also take

on a role that you feel passionate about. This is what JCI is about as well - getting you to devel-op knowledge and new skills.

All this is of course up to you but in my expe-rience there is nothing better than to take the plunge and be part of the JCI London council. There is so much to be gained and if someone asks - you do all of this and you don’t get paid - I always have the Sam Smith song in my head “Money on my mind” - I feel it is an anthem for JCI London. We do not take the role on for money but because we want to be better and learn something new - experience team work and leadership first hand.

The first step - if you are not dead set on a council role yet - I know they can be challeng-ing and also evoke fear. Start smaller lead a project, a team or be a deputy director and see if it is something you see yourself doing. Get to know the different facets that each task, project and role brings with itself. Make a decision that feels right for you. Some people are more com-fortable to lead smaller teams in projects and some are not comfortable leading at all. That is something unique about JCI you can see what your strength is and if you like to be a leader - not everyone does and there is no shame in that or anything wrong with it.

I am sure there are many project and roles in 2015 that will fit your profile and that can help you take the first step towards a leadership role within JCI London.
