Every wonder how we knew so much about our planet and solar system before there was space exploration or even telescopes?

Over the next few days, you will be reading about scientists who are considered the “Father’s of

Astronomy” as they are responsible for much of the early thoughts about Earth and its place in the Universe.

Graffiti-Style Name Design

First, watch this video for an example: https://www.artsonia.com/teachers/ideas/entry.asp?id=12

STEP 1

· LIGHTLY sketch your first or last name.

· BE SURE TO LEAVE MORE SPACE THAN USUAL BETWEEN EACH LETTER.

STEP 2

Use some of the suggestions from the video to add “extras” to your letters:

· Make some curved parts angular, add extensions or “arrow points” to ends of letters.

STEP 3

· Use your pencil to “thicken” each letter into a bubble-style letter.

· Also do this with any lines you drew at the tips/edges of your letters.

Page 8: JBM 5th Grade Math - Smyrna School District · 2020-05-04 · S T E P 7 : · U se TWO color pencils for your letters: · O ne color fades from the top down, the other color fades

STEP 4

Now, Use a Sharpie, (or a thin black marker) to outline these new letters and ERASE the guide letters inside!

STEP 5

· Create a dripping paint effect: On the tops of your letters, it’s just a “bubble” shape that goes around the

tops. On the BOTTOM is where you can get creative and play with the length of your drip shapes.

· Do this in pencil first, THEN pen!

STEP 6

· Use a pencil and a ruler to draw horizontal parallel lines to start a brick wall behind your letters, above AND

below. (This can get tricky on the bottom where you will have to lift your pencil a lot to skip over the drip effect!) Use alternating vertical lines to create the individual bricks and Sharpie over your wall when you’re happy with it.

STEP 7:

· Use TWO color pencils for your letters:

· One color fades from the top down, the other color fades from the bottom up.

· You can leave the center of your letters white, OR allow the two colors to overlap a bit in the middle.

Page 9: JBM 5th Grade Math - Smyrna School District · 2020-05-04 · S T E P 7 : · U se TWO color pencils for your letters: · O ne color fades from the top down, the other color fades

Tips for successful blending:

· Press harder where you want your color darker, and lighter as you start to fade.

· Layer your color pencil work in multiple directions for the smoothest look.

STEP 8:

Next, use a regular pencil to shade around your “drip border”.

· Press Harder close to the letters, and lighter as you move away from the letters.

· It is helpful to use your finger to soften and blend this shading work!

· Also, add a little emphasis to the edges and corners of your bricks--- it will help them look more 3D!

Send me pictures of your work! [email protected]

Day 1 - Monday : Session 2, Target One Fractions In this session, you will use the Strategies for Multiplying Whole Numbers & Unit Fractions poster to help play the workplace game: Target One Fractions with someone in your home. The goal of the game is to arrange your cards so that your product will be closest to one. The example used on our strategy poster is 5 x ¼ = 1 ¼. Do you think these numbers could be rearranged to create an equation where the product is closer to one? Keep this thought in mind as you play the game. Have fun!!!

Day 2 - Tuesday: Session 3, Fraction Story Problems In this session you will continue to practice multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Make sure you are using the strategy poster from session 2 while working through this activity, if needed. Today’s activity is fairly challenging as you will need to know that 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer in order to solve some of the problems. ** As you work through each problem it is important that you focus on what the question is asking. In problem 1a., the question is asking how many kilometers Nathan walked. Use the information in the story to help you solve.

**Once again it is important that you pay careful attention to what the question is asking. For 1b, the

question is asking you to find how many meters Nathan walked. This differs from how you solved 1a

and the information provided in the story to help you solve, because we are now looking for meters and

not kilometers. In order to solve this you will need to know that there are 1,000 meters in 1 kilometer.

You may want to use a ratio table to help solve this problem.

Hint: Use the answer from 1a to help you find how many meters Nathan walked.

Page 21: JBM 5th Grade Math - Smyrna School District · 2020-05-04 · S T E P 7 : · U se TWO color pencils for your letters: · O ne color fades from the top down, the other color fades

● As you continue solving the remaining problems, you will use the same strategies you did for 1a

and 1b. An answer key has been provided below for you to check your work. Please do your best

not to look at it before making an effort to solve each problem. If you need additional help, please

reach out to your teacher.

Day 3 - Wednesday: Session 4, Sharing Strategies

In this session, you will use the Strategies for Multiplying a Whole Number by a Fraction poster to help complete the Thinking About Strategy student book page. Think about how you can use the strategies from the previous sessions as well as the strategies listed below to complete the student book page. An answer key has been provided, however do your best to complete the activity on your own before checking your answers.

Day 4 - Thursday: Session 5, Trading Places

In this session, you will need to re-examine the strategy chart from the last session. As you look over the chart think about the similarities and differences in the strategies listed. You will begin by completing a Problem String and then play Work Place 3a: Beat the Calculator: Fractions with someone at home. As you work through this problem string, think about the similarities and differences between each problem.

● What do you notice is happening to the numbers in each equation? ● Did the changes make each equation easier or harder to solve?

Problems Strategies and Recording

Did you use a variety of strategies to solve each problem?

Work Place Beat the Calculator: Fractions

The Work Place for today gives you a chance to review adding and subtracting fractions. As a reminder,

when adding and subtracting fractions you need common denominators. In Unit 3, we worked on using ratio

tables to create equivalent fractions to help find common denominators. Below is an example you can

reference as you play the game.

Week 5/4/20 - Science

Graded Assignment: Solar Walk

Imagine you are taking a vacation to visit all of the planets and other cool destinations in the solar system. When we plan a vacation or trip here on Earth, we have to think about how far away things are, and how long it will take us to get to each place. In order to plan your trip you would need a map. Using the

information provided, you are going to create your ‘map’, better known as a scale model, of our solar system.

Directions:

● In order to create a scale model of the solar system you will need to use the chart

provided that lists the planets and their distance in millimeters from each other.

Cut out and use the mm ruler, if needed. Measurements do not need to be

exact.

● You can draw your own planets, use words or use color and cut out the planets

provided.

Sun to Mercury = 6 mm Mercury to Venus = 5 mm Venus to Earth = 4 mm Earth to Mars = 8 mm

Mars to Jupiter = 55 mm Jupiter to Saturn = 65 mm Saturn to Uranus = 144 mm (14 c. 4 mm)

Uranus to Neptune = 163 mm (16 in. 3mm)
