    I. OVERVIEWIn this workshop, we will find out what are chord shapes, how are they played or themechanics of these chords, and what do they mean to playing the ukulele and how you can use

them to improve or elevate your ukulele skills. When I first started to play the ukulele as a young boy, I didn't realize that by learning to playdifferent chords on various positions of the fret board, and in different keys, I was really learninghow to duplicate and reuse the same "shape or way of positioning my fingering" in differentsongs.

II. WHAT ARE THEY?In music a ukulele chord is a chord, or collection of tones usually sounded together and

played at once. It can be composed of notes played adjacent or on separate strings or all the notestogether.Chord shapes are also referred to as" a moveable chord shape". a special type ofmoveable chord shape is a "barre" chord. Barre chords refers to positioning your left hand first orindex finger flat across more all four strings on a fret. Many chords can be played with the samenotes in more than place on the fret board. These are chords you can move up and down the fret board in a fixed formation or shape. As I have stated above, this "fixed" position of fingering allows you to use them in any key bypositioning the fingering up and down the fret board.

III. MAJOR UKULELE CHORD SHAPES (root or open string positions)1. The All shape or the chord of A major

    - excercises sliding up the fret board with the same chord shape- J'A" to B to B to C2. The "F" shape or chord of F major- exercises sliding up the fret board- F to F# to G to G# TO A3. The shape "D" of the chord of 0 major

exercises sliding up the fret board -- D to D# to Eb to E to F

IV. HOW TO PLAY THEM1. Foundation chord shapes2. Purpose is to play several voicings of the same chord in different positions,

allowing the player to be creative in expressing a melody.3. Try to make using these moveable second nature

    v. HOW TO USE THEM IN YOUR UKULELE PLAYING1. Using the nAil shape chord

    - "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( 8b- c- C#- 0, D#(Eb)- E-F-F#-G-G#-A2. Using the "A" minor shape chord

    - "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( 8b- c- C#- 0, D#(Eb)- E-F-F#-G-G#-A3. Using the" A7" shape chord- "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( Bb- C- C#- 0, D#(Eb)- E-F-F#-G-G#-A4. Using the "F" shape chord

    - "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( F# - G- G#- A, A#(Bb)- C -C# -O-D#(Eb)-E-F5. Using the "F" minor shape chord- "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( F# - G- G#- A, A#(Bb)- C -C# -O-D#(Eb)

-E-F6. Using the "F7" shape chord

    - "barre" the shape on each ascending fret ( F# - G- G#- A, A#(Bb)- C -C# -D-D#(Eb)-E-F7. Using the"O" shape chord- "barre" the shape on each ascending fret (D-D#(Eb) -E - F - F# - G- G#- A, A#(Bb-

    C-C#-O8. Using the" Om" shape chord- "barre" the shape. on each ascending fret (D-O#(Eb) -E - F - F# - G- G#- A, A#(Sb-

    C-C#-D9. Using the "07" chord shape- "barre" the shape on each ascending fret (O-D#(Eb) -E - F - F# - G- G#- A, A#(8b-C-C#-O

Each of the shapes is movable, and any chord can be played using any shape (with a fewexceptions if you have only twelve frets on your instrument). By moving the chord all the wayto the top, so the top fret of the chord coincides with the nut of the instrument, it becomes anopen chord. Below are five different major chords in all shapes. Practice these, and do the samefor the minor chords. You can create the minor chords on your own by flattening the thirds.

The previously mentioned notation "C / G" means that a C chord should be played; with G as thelowest note. This is used when the arranger has a certain bass progression inmind. Since theukulele player is rarely concerned with the low notes, this indication can usually be ignored, andany C chord shape may be used. For typical accompaniment, I recomme~ the closed chordshape that is closest to the nut, as open strings and high notes tend to overshadow the melody. Also, fingering near the nut is often easier. ~

    The M ino r C ho rd

A minor chord is constructed from a majorchord by lowering the 3rd note by one halfstep (one fret), so that it becomes ajIat 3rd.(Notice that this is notated as "~3urather than"3~"). This is shown to the right for theshapes of the previous page. In the secondshape you have to lower two notes, as the 3 r d.is played on two strings! The resulting chord is called B6 minor (B~m)for soprano instruments, and F minor (Fm)for tenor instruments. A good exercise is toplay both the major and minor chords foreach shape. This will train your ear to hearthe difference between major and minorchords. This will also help you rememberwhich is the 3rd note in each chord. We will learn how minor chords are usedlater in this book.

Instead of Fm, some musicianswrite "Fmin" or "F-", but they allmean the same thing.
