CTJS Gala: Third Time’s a Charm

Dancing to the music of the Temple Highlighters.

Last month's third annual CTJS Gala was a rousing suc-cess, raising more than $1000 for the CTJS scholarship fund, introducing new people to CTJS and reuniting jazz and dance.

The Gala unfolded at the In The Mood Ballroom in Temple on Saturday, Sept.24. As they have for previous Ga-las, ITMB owners Karen and Rudy Gonzales provided CTJS with use of their facilities at no cost. Karen is a member the CTJS Board of Directors and is a strong supporter of CTJS.

CTJS President Larry Simonette said, "I personally want to thank Karen and Rudy Gonzales for their generosity to CTJS. Over half of the money we made the night of the Gala came from the ITMB cli-entele. Additionally, it was she who

placed CTJS envelops on the tables for donations that netted us more than $200. And that night was the third event for which they donated the use of the ballroom to CTJS —it usually rents out for $1,200 for four hours.”

The first set at the event was pro-

vided by The Temple High School Highlighters, an excellent student jazz band fresh from its second trip to New York City to participate in the Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington com-petition (May 2011). The Highlighters were directed by Brent Matheson.

After the break, the CTJS Little Big Band supplied the dancers with music — the Little Big Band combined Temple College faculty, band directors and other members of the Temple

Jazz Orchestra with a few hold-overs from the Highlighters, under the direction of CTJS Board Mem-ber Dr. Colin Mason.

The Waco Jazz Orchestra will cook with Carbonara on Monday, Oct. 24, when vocalist Bruce Car-bonara joins the band in a Frankly Basie concert.

The concert’s title refers to the music produced by the legendary collaborations between vocal-ist Frank Sinatra and the Count

Basie Orchestra in the early 1960s. The two joined forces for two studio albums in 1962 and 1964 before recording together live at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in early 1966.

The Sands recording was the first commercially released album to

capture Sinatra live, and its was the perfect blend of Sinatra and Basie's well-oiled swing machine with superb charts by Quincy Jones that produced definitive versions of many of the songs most closely associ-ated with Sinatra, such as “Fly Me To The Moon” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

That body of work will be explored in the "Frankly Basie" concert, as Carbonara and WJO re-create the magic of those live performances from Las Vegas. WJO (under the direction of Tim Cates) and Carbonara will perform at 7:30 p.m., in the Ball Performing Arts Center on the campus of

McLennan Community College in Waco. The concert is free and open to the public.
