The Bug That Does Nothing To You!
By: Jaylynn Walsh
Imagine that a bug is flying all around you. You go to your room and it follows you. Suddenly it lands on your clothes. Then you touch it and it`s all smooth and you get this powder on your finger.
You pick it up and throw it out the window. Then it flies away quickly. An hour later, another one comes in and you throw it out the window. And you wonder how these bugs get in. You wonder if it`s going to hurt you? Do you know was it is?
Actually, it`s a bug and it doesn't hurt anything. This bug is a Moth. It`s related to the butterfly. It`s not a butterfly it is just a relative. The butterfly and the moth are the best at flying when it comes to bugs. Like the butterfly the moth has wings and 6 legs.
The moth lives in North America, Africa, South America, and Australia. More than 150 species are in this group. Most adult moths don’t eat at all, infact they drink nectar from flowers. Giant Silkworm moths have a 1 year life cycle.
The moth also feeds on silk, felt, wood, fur, hair, and feathers. Moths can produce as many as 10 broods per year. The Luna moth is born without a mouth so it never eats or drinks. The Cecropia larvae can grow to about 4’’ in length. Some moths pupate underground, such as many Sphinx moths. The hummingbird moth’s wings beat 70 times per second. The pellet like caterpillar (baby moth) excrement is called “frass”. The webworm caterpillars (baby moth) go into communal diapause. Now you know a lot about moths.
If you ever feel like doing research on moths you can find a lot of information about these bugs! I dare you to do some research about these bugs! You might not like them but they are awesome bugs.
