JAVVA IS...

JAVVA stands for “Jeunes Actifs dans le Volontariat et les Voyages Alternatifs” or in other words “Young People Active in Volunteering and Alternative Travels” and was founded as a non-profit organization in 2000. Since 2003, JAVVA has been recognized as a youth organization by the French-speaking government of Belgium.

OUR MISSION

We aim to promote an ideal of tolerance, solidarity and peace between young people from around the world and to encourage their active participation and mobility. JAVVA has no political or ideological affiliation.

OUR APPROACH

International camps and volunteer projects enable inter-cultural encounters as well as the discovery of others and therefore, in our opinion, represent a useful tool in the construction of peace. They contribute towards a fairer world with more solidarity and respect for differences. Even if our projects cannot be considered to be within the framework of humanitarian aid or emergency relief, they offer participation in another culture, and teach teamwork through participation in a development project at the heart of a local community.

OUR MAIN ACTIVITIES

− International Workcamps− Medium or Long term Volunteering− European Voluntary Service (EVS)− Thematic groups− Trainings

Dear partners,

Please, find below, our program of workcamps for summer 2014. We do hope to host many of your motivated volunteers this summer, and that they will have a good time in Belgium. We would like to point out some general remarks and specificities regarding our workcamps :

− Workcamps

This year, our workcamps will last 2-3 weeks and will take place from July to October. The number of international volunteers in the camp will vary from 7 to 12. If possible, we try to avoid having more than 2 participants of the same nationality in the camp. Usually English is the camp language, but there are some projects where notions of French are necessary (see workcamps' descriptions). 9 workcamps are confirmed and 2 others have to be confirmed after TM.

− Conditions for participation

Volunteers should be over 18 year old and there is no maximum age limit. There are no special skills required from volunteers. Participants should be motivated to do voluntary work, be ready to meet the realities of local life and demonstrate flexibility, tolerance and openness to new experiences. There is no extra fee required to participate in our workcamps.

Three new workcamps this year ! Do not miss them …

PARTNER: "L’Enfance de l'Art", created in 1997, is a non profit organisation whose aim is to help parents to become more involved in their children's education. To that purpose, the organisation set up hosting facilities for children or people with reduced autonomy. leisure workshops, childcare centres, schools. The organisation follows Steiner pedagogy principles.

L’Enfance de l'Art hosts about 80 children from 0 to 12 years old. The kindergarten, the childcare centre, the nursery school and the primary school are recognized by the French-speaking Community of Belgium and the organisation is now established in the former boarding school of « Dames de la Providence ». These buildings are rented for a very low price before a probable purchase in order to avoid vandalism. They were dilapidated and deserted since 2004 before the parents of the organisation decided to begin renovating them and that's where the workcamp steps in!

WORK: In partnership with a construction company focused on social improvement, l'Enfance de l'Art organises a renovation workcamp in the former boarding school of « Dames de la Providence » that has hosted for 3 years the new Waldorf school of the French-speaking community of Belgium, as well as a kindergarten in the first of the 6 renovated buildings. This company uses ecological material and techniques that are in harmony with our environment.

Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 12 am and from 2 pm to 4 pm, on the renovation of a third building in order to turn it into a new daycare centre for children from 2 to 3 years old and related premises (toilets, kitchen, dormitory, playroom,...). They will be asked, according to work progress, to work, in 2 or 3 teams, on different techniques and activities:

− Wall scarping and application of coating (straw/hemp and lime)

− Disassembly of the building and sorting of materials

− Renovation works in the gardens and the courtyard

− Participation to the management and the preparation of a community kitchen of good quality

JAVVA02 – WHV – Bois-du-Luc, Major Mining Site of WalloniaBois-du-Luc, Major Mining Site of Wallonia

LA LOUVIERELA LOUVIERE 14.07 – 27.0714.07 – 27.07 ENVIENVI 9 vols9 vols 1818+

PARTNER: Bois-du-Luc is one of the 4 major mining sites of Wallonia inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. During the 19th century, the Société des Charbonnages du Bois-du-Luc founded the Saint-Emmanuel pit and constructed a unique village model nearby. All sorts of activities were available at the village - which was supervised by a director - from purchasing food and drink at the grocery, butcher's, mill and brewery, get treatment both at home and at the hospital, relax at the park and kiosk, and get an education, both at school and in church. Bois-du-Luc is a key location on the European Route of the Industrial Heritage. This site also illustrates the important migratory flows known in Walloon collieries: Flemish, Poles, Italians,Greeks, Moroccans, Turks,...

The colliery site was closed down in 1959 and 20 years later the "Societé du Bois-du-Luc" became a thing of the past. People are still living in the colliery settlement; indeed they were the first to demand that the historic buildings be preserved. Now the pithead site has been thoroughly restored and houses the Bois-du-Luc Ecomuseum, created in 1983, aims to record everything the architecture, the landscape and the inhabitants of the central Belgian area of "Le Centre" have to tell about the history of the coal period. The Ecomuseum expressly desires the participation of the local population.

WORK: The project aims at contributing to the preservation and protection of the historical site, newly recognized as World heritage Site as well as raising its cultural and historical importance among international volunteers, local community and visitors. Another objective is to support the ecomuseum of the mining site to get ready for hosting a special exhibition in the framework of « Mons 2015 » as the city of Mons, located close to the site has been elected as the European capital of culture for 2015.

The main activity is preserving the site by cleaning the area, collecting rubbish and removing the over-grown grass. Volunteers will also clean and paint the rooms that will host a special exhibition for Mons 2015. A photo exhibition will be presented in the ecomusem in the end of the workcamp in order to show the result of the volunteers' work.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to be involved in the visits of the site and to present pedagogical tools to visitors and the local community in order to raise awareness about World Heritage.

Visits of other World Heritage sites of the area will be organised as well as workshops about World Heritage and related themes (industrial migrations, links with current migrations, testimonies,...). It will be asked to volunteers to prepare a short presentation (on any kind of support) of a site inscribed as World Heritage in their country for one of the workshops.

ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will sleep in tents and caravans on the site. A sanitary block will be available. The living conditions are rudimentary! Please bring a sleeping bag and a pillow if you need one.

FOOD: Meals will be prepared by volunteers in a “kitchen block” (kind of site shed) located next to the tents, caravans and sanitary blocks.

LOCATION: Bois-du-Luc is one of the oldest collieries in Belgium located in Houdeng-Aimeries, a commune of La Louvière. The activity of this colliery ended in 1973. The working-class neighbourhood was built between 1838 et 1853. The site is subjected to restoration and cultural preservation. The site is established at the heart of the Centre basin, in the Province of Hainaut, between Mons and Charleroi. The Centre basin has known an intense industrial development starting in the first half of the 19th Century before declining during the second half of the 20th Century.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION: It is a new workcamp. This workcamp is designed for volunteers who have a real interest for World Heritage and for the specific thematic of this project.

BRUSSELSBRUSSELS 14.08 – 29.0814.08 – 29.08 FESTFEST 8 vols8 vols 1919+

PARTNER: Since its creation in 1994, “La Compagnie des Nouveaux Disparus” strives to give access to culture and - particularly theatre - to a socially disadvantaged public, less inclined to cultural activities. Democratisation of culture and promotion of diversity are the guiding principles of the company's activities. These are divided in three types of projects: theatre plays creation, “Theâtres Nomades” festival and Mimouna Festival.

Every summer for 7 years, the Brussels Royal Park hosts more than 60 theatre shows over 4 days for the Brussels theatre festival. The fountain and surrounding area are metamorphosed into a colourful nomad village made of marquees, caravans, Berber tents, and open-air stages. The programme is diversified through various shows for children, a circus, street theatre, classical theatre, puppet shows, as well as creative workshops on the stage of the Royal theatre of Brussels.

More information (FR) on: www.theatresnomades.be or www.lesnouveauxdisparus.com

WORK: Volunteers will help on several aspects of the festival logistics, such as meals preparation for the entire team of the festival, assembling and dismantling of tents, building and putting up the decorations, stage-managing, transport and unloading of material, installation of the “village of organisations”, waste and composting toilet management,... Volunteers will work with all people working on the festival (technicians, stage managers, facilitators, organizers, cooks...). Volunteers who have sufficient knowledge of French will have the opportunity to take part in promotion activities together with artists in Brussels metro before the festival. Volunteers will also be integrated in the different teams during the festival (tickets, bar, catering, stage-managing,...) which will take place from August 21st to August 24th 2013.

Physical work will be asked to volunteers so it is important to take this into account. Volunteers will also have lighter tasks like meal preparation, waste management,... Depending of the programme schedule, volunteers may also have the possibility to actively take part in entertainment activities of the festival.

ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will sleep in caravans on the site of the festival. The living conditions are rudimentary close to conditions of a “scout camp”. Volunteers will use dry toilet placed in the park and will have to maintain it. Volunteers will have to respect the time constraint regarding the showers. Please bring your sleeping bag, sheets and toiletries.

While part of the Buro Bizzi team, the volunteer will have a particular task at Petit Château. He/she will bring those little extras the professional staff isn't able to bring. The volunteer can organise new activities or continue already existing activities. This brings a little diversity to the residents. The volunteers can take their time to listen to the asylum seekers and have a very privileged contact with them because they don't represent an authority nor an institution. The volunteer contributes to the quality of the asylum seeker's stay.
