Lifes little marvels. A group of kids jumping with

excitement around a chakri. Beautiful handmade Diwali

cards an eclectic medley of images, from Mickey

Mouse, to artistic diyas, to Ganesh-Laxmi! The laughter

and the merry makingit was all so innocent and

    honest, unrehearsed and spontaneous.

Tiny feet twisting and turning to the beat of Bum

BumBole, the whole lot of Jatan kids on stage as one

huge wave of excitement on the annual day celebration

    on 26th January

Those beautiful smiles and sparkling eyes fill up the

senses; Jatan has indeed become an experience, anexperience of transformation etched in soulful pencil

shadings by Ms. Garima Katiyar in a series dedicated to

Jatan. The sketches are a reflection of a cycle that

human beings go through: of an individuals search for

fulfilment in the world outside, only to realize that the

    answer is within oneself.

    Jatan is 5 years old!

The journey began in 2007 with two teachers and twenty odd

students. As time went by, more and more children playing on

the streets peeped in to see what was happening and became a

part of the Jatan School. Going by the existing perceptions of a

school, for a child the choice would have been difficult to playin the streets or to get into a school. Moreover, with a school

that gave them no freebies, just a loving environment where

the self is celebrated. Jatan Vidyalaya became an exploration

ground- a kind of adventure island for the three hours, from

two to five in the evening. But the little adventurers developed

a liking for the place and kept coming back every day. 5 years

later some hundred self-motivated adventurers come in

    regularly to Jatan Vidyalaya.

We had a small celebration on 26th Jan 2012 to mark thecompletion of five years of Jatan Vidyalaya. Prof Sanjay

Chandwani from MDI and Prof Chari from BIMTECH were the

guests of honour. Various local leaders and dignitaries also

graced the occasion. The children showcased their talents in a

    variety of performances.

    Teachers Day @ Nielsens Research

The Teachers day celebration for Jatans pack of four student teachers was an absolutely new experience this

time. The Nielsen Cares team invited the teachers to their office for a small celebration. The entire office at

Nielsen Research got together to listen to what the teachers had to say about Jatan and the experience of

teaching. There was palpable enthusiasm in the environment and the Jatan team was overwhelmed by the

warm welcome and hospitality of the hosts. The party was a unique celebration, completed with cake cutting

    and delicious snacks.

To top it all, Nielsen Care Team has donated computers for Jatans computer centre and many Nielsenites have

shown a keen interest and enthusiasm in being a part of Jatans journey!

    Jatan stands for team Anna

When people took to the streets and thousands joined team Anna at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, it was

indeed an occasion of great history in the making and Team Jatan too decided to join the crusade and be a

part of the historical moment. Providing help to the needy in the most efficient manner was the goal of

Team Jatan comprising of Gourab & Leena Banerjee, Vivek & Shipra Singh and Ramit. They carried the much

needed water and food supply to help people beat the heat and regain some lost energy. The team did

manage to get substantial quantities up to the Ramlila Maidan but as it was discovered on reaching thatcarrying the supplies inside the ground was a challenge because of the long queues lined up outside the

venue but all of a sudden the team got approached by a group of volunteers who helped carry the supplies

and also distributed it to the people.

The cake cutting ceremony And the eating ceremony

Senior students of Jatan Vidyalaya along with their teachers were invited to BIMTECH on 2nd October to

participate in the foundation day celebrations. They participated in the drawing contest and drew beautiful

sketches of Gandhiji and Shastriji, along with imaginary scenes and picturesque landscapes. It was followed

by a sumptuous community lunch and some wonderful gifts for the children.

The Jatan team members distributing fruits to the activists at Ram Lila Grounds

The atmosphere was electrifying to say the least. Team Jatan didnt know any volunteer and neither did

they know them, but the positive energy connected everybody with each other. Team Jatan tried its best to

reach out to the maximum number of people and help them with food and water. The sights of the tri

colour flying all around and people shouting slogans in support of Anna Hazare and patriotic songs being

played all around are still fresh in the minds of the team. It was indeed a moment of pride as well assatisfaction as Team Jatan carried on the message of love, harmony and peace.
