• The earliest Buddhist structures still extant in Japan.
• The oldest wooden buildings in the Far East are found in Horyu-ji
• Horyu-ji is a temple complex to the south-west of Nara.
• It was first built in the early 7th
century as the private temple of crown Prince Shotoku
• It consists of 41 independent buildings
• The main worship hall , orKondo( Golden Hall) and Goju-no-to (Five-storey Pagoda) arestand in the center of an openarea surrounded by a roofedcloister.
• Kondo is a two-storey structure of post-and-beam construction capped by anIrimoya.
• Irimoya or hipped-gabled roof ofceramic.
• Inside of it are some of the mostimportant sculptures of the period. Thecentral image is Shaka Trinity, thehistorical Buddha flanked by twobodhisattvas (Buddhist saints)
• Shaka Trinity is a cast bronze sculpture by Tori Busshimade in homage to the recently deceased Prince Shotoku.
• At the four corners f the platform are the Guardian Kings of Four Directions.
Guardian Kings of Four Directionswere carved in wood about 650.
