Following the devastating March 11th earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear crisis, the members of the Japanese community in the Greater New Orleans region, like so many others, felt compelled to aid the victims of this heartbreaking disaster.

Having survived Hurricane Katrina, the people of our community share a special bond with the people in Japan whose lives will be forever changed by this disaster. The NOLA Japan Quake Fund Coalition’s hope is that we can assist the Japanese in their time of need, just as they did for us following Katrina.

As a unified voice, the members of jetaaNOLA, the Japan Club of New Orleans, the Japan Society of New Orleans, the Japanese Garden Foundation of New Orleans, and the Ikebana International Chapter 97, advised by Donna Fraiche, Honorary Consul General of Japan for New Orleans, have established the NOLA Japan Quake Fund. The delivery of these funds is designed to be as strategic as possible, with the lowest possible overhead.

This fund will be administered by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the region’s oldest and most established community foundation. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

You may not realize it, but NOLA has had a strong Japanese presence for many years, first contact with Japan being made back in 1884 at the World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition held in New Orleans.

• After the devastation wrought during and after Hurricane Katrina, the Japanese donated over $44 million dollars to local relief and recovery efforts.

• New Orleans' Japanese sister city is Matsue, located in Shimane Prefecture. Matsue was chosen because writer Lafcadio Hearn was active in both New Orleans and Matsue. Hearn was a half-Irish half-Greek immigrant to the U.S. who lived in New Orleans from 1877 to 1890 and wrote for several newspapers in the city. He is often credited with "inventing" the image of New Orleans. Hearn then moved to Matsue, Japan where he worked as a teacher and writer, penning several books about Japanese culture. He married the daughter of a local samurai family. He took a Japanese name and is known mostly by Koizumi Yakumo in Japan.

• An official Japanese consulate opening in New Orleans in 1922 and was open for 85 years, with a 10 year absence during World War II. In 2008, the consulate was moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

• Japan has a special place in its heart for New Orleans' music, and this has brought a number of premier Japanese musicians to the city. Among others, Papa Grows Funk, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Bonerama, Jeremy Davenport, Kermit Ruffins, and the Brass-A-Holics all feature Japanese musicians.

The NOLA Japan Quake Fund consortium members organized a gala benefit fund raiser in support of the Japanese disaster relief effort. A Night for Nippon was created. The Honorable Donna D. Fraiche, Honorary Consul General of Japan in New Orleans with her husband, John Fraiche MD, served as Chairs for the event.

Japan Club of New Orleans, jetaaNOLA, and Japan Society of New Orleans provided committee members. Japan Club of New Orleans was represented by Katie Arimura, Hiroko Kusuda and Greg M. Tokuyama. jettaNOLA was represented by Joe Ellis, Doug Tassin and Flora Williams. Japan Society of New Orleans was represented by Willie Brown and Mike Turner.The Honorable Hiroshi Sato, Consul General of Japan in Nashville served as one of the Honorary Chairs. Other honorary chairs included the Mayor of New Orleans, the Honorable Mitchell J. Landrieu; New Orleans City Council members, the honorable Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson and Arnie Fielkow; the Honorable Susan G. Guidry, the Honorable Kristin Giselson Palmer, the Honorable Alexandra Mora; Gary LaGrange, President and CEO, Port of New Orleans; Kurt A. Gitter, MD and Alice Yelen Gitter; Susan M. Taylor, Director, New Orleans Museum of Art; Mark A. Cooper, Director, GOHSEP; and Gina Farago.

A Night for Nippon was held on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The Patron Reception kicked of the event followed by the Benefit Gala. The New Orleans Museum of Art generously provided the venue.

The mood was set by Ikebana International Chapter 97 who provided exquisite floral decorations and the Origami Group from Japan Club of New Orleans provided delicately folded Origami table decorations. Japanese beer and Japan-inspired cocktails were complimentary provided by Glazer’s Distributors and fine wines and champagne was donated by Cartes des Vins. appetizers. Musicians from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra provided the musical back drop for the gala benefit. There were picture posters showing the devastating results of the March 11 th earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

The Honorable Hiroshi Sato, Consul General of Japan in Nashville, the Honorable Donna D. Fraiche, Honorary Consul General of Japan in New Orleans, and Alice Yelen Gitter refreshed the audience’s memory of the catastrophic events of the need for disaster relief tsunami as well as subsequent rebuilding efforts and the reason for the gala. They also expressed their gratitude for the generosity of the sponsors and donors for A Night for Nippon.

Lexus of New Orleans was the named corporate sponsor for A Night for Nippon. Other corporate sponsors included: Iberia Bank; Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz; Zen Noh Grain; the Port of New Orleans; Jones Walker; Common Wealth REIT; Laitraim; Carte des Vins; Glazer’s Distributors; Little Tokyo Restaurant; Float Studios and Turner Industries.

A Night for Nippon raised over $100,000.00 for NOLA Japan Quake Fund to be used towards the rebuilding efforts in the affected areas of the Japanese earthquake-tsunami.

Jammin' for Japan

A fundraiser to benefit the NOLA Japan Quake Fund, “Jammin’ for Japan”, was held on April 10, 2011, at the Rock N’ Bowl in New Orleans. Owner John Blancher graciously donated the use of the venue for the event. The requested donation for admission was $10, and over 800 people attended, many of whom were from out of town and visiting New Orleans for business or for the French Quarter Fest, which was being held on the same weekend. A donation table was set up for people who wanted to make an additional gift towards the fund. Eric Paulsen from WWL-TV was the emcee for the night. John Gros of the band Papa Grows Funk organized the music for the event. Five bands played during the evening: Jeremy Davenport, Papa Grows Funk with Sunpie Barnes, Bonerama, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers and George Porter Jr.’s Runnin’ Pardners. Four of the five bands included Japanese musicians – June

Yamagishi, Nori Naraoka, Nobu Ozaki and Yoshitaka Tsuji. The New Orleans Jazz Taiko Drummers, a local youth drumming group, kept the crowd entertained by performing between each band’s set. Local radio station WWOZ 90.7FM aired the event live on the radio as well as providing a live stream on their website, www.wwoz.org. Yumi Mano coordinated the food concession with Ninja restaurant, who took over the kitchen at Rock N’ Bowl to serve up their delicious soft shell crab po-boy along with other Japanese dishes. T-shirts with the event logo and band names were also sold, with the proceeds going to the fund. Daniel Morales of JetaaNOLA and his group of volunteers organized a Celebrity Bowling tournament, where guests could pay for a spot on the lane of their choice to bowl with one of the celebrities. Participants included Tom Drummond from the band Better Than Ezra, Michiel Huisman from the HBO show “Treme”, Eric Paulsen and many of the musicians from the bands playing that evening. A silent auction with some great one-of-a-kind items was organized by

Michelle Hansen and a team of volunteers. Thanks to many generous donors, the auction included autographed CDs and DVDs, gift certificates from numerous local hotels, restaurants and other businesses, books, art and even a vintage bottle of wine from the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. Carrie Williamson coordinated the public relations efforts and corporate donors. M.G. Maher & Company Inc., a worldwide shipping company, was the major sponsor of the event. President David Schulingkamp said, “Japan has consistently been one of the largest trading partners of the Port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River at large for decades and our company has had excellent relationships with the Japanese Trading Companies and manufacturing companies that have been involved in the trade here and throughout the United States since the mid-fifties. Besides business, we have been fortunate to develop warm friendships with many Japanese people and remember well the generous assistance afforded to New Orleans and Louisiana by Japanese companies and organizations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Our heartfelt sympathies and feelings go to the families and friends of Japan. By supporting the recovery effort with the event "Jammin’ for Japan" we hope that the language of jazz and the other music of New Orleans will be a small token of our respect, and another bond between ourselves and the Japanese people. From the city first made known in Japan by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) and who in turn taught us many of the first things of Japanese culture, we say thank you. We are with you in all of your recovery efforts."

Other organizations supporting the event included Greater New Orleans, Inc., the World Trade Center of New Orleans and the Port of New Orleans. Port of N.O. President and CEO Gary LaGrange said, "The generosity the Japanese people displayed to the City of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was overwhelming. Japan is one of our top trading partners and we, as a maritime community, have long-lasting relationships there. Our hearts go out to them as they recover from the events of the earthquake and tsunami and stand ready to assist in any way we can. NOLA Japan

初音家一家と大阪の盆踊り

サナエ・カイザー

日本では盆踊りの季節です。この夏、大阪

に滞在中、うれしくも初音家秀若先生と歌月先生

が演奏される盆踊りに誘っていただきました。彼

らは河内音頭を伝承することに勤められる家元の

四代目で、各地でいそがしく行事に出演されてい

ます。ニューオリンズの日本祭には、2003, 2004

年と市内がハリケーンに襲われる前に出場され、

大賑わいになったことがまだ鮮明です。彼らは、

ニューオリンズの音楽が大好きで、そのために去

年もこちらに来られました。来年2012年には、是

非、日本祭に出場したいということです。

Bon Odori with the Hatsuneya Family in Osaka

It is Bon Odori season in Japan. While my family stayed in Osaka this summer, Mr. Hidewaka Hatsuneya and Mrs. Kazuki Hidewaka welcomed and invited us to one of their Bon Odori festivals. They are the head of the fourth generation Japanese traditional family Hatsuneya who perform and teach Kawachi Ondo in Osaka. In 2003 and 2004 before Huricane Katrina stuck the city, they participated at Japan Fest and were well received by the audience. Since they love New Orleans music so much, they visited us in New Orleans just to come listen to the music. They expressed that they hope to come to participate at Japan Fest again in 2012.
