MESSAGE FROM MEMBERSHIP

Cheers to 30 years! 2018 promises to be a

year of fun and excitement as the Club

celebrates 30 years of service. To liven

things up a bit in 2018 we are planning

some “pop-up social events” in various

areas of the club. It is our hope that not

only will you join festivities in the areas that

you have become familiar with using but

that you will also try a few new things in

2018. Guest participation at some events

will be highly encouraged while other

events will be strictly for “members

only”. More details to follow via the club’s

newsletter, emails, Facebook and on our

website.

We will start our 30th year by celebrating

on Tuesday, January 30th during the

Taste of Tuesday Buffet. From day one The

Woodlands was designed to be a family-

friendly club so what better way to start off

the anniversary celebration than at the

Taste of Tuesday Buffet?! To help us

prepare and staff appropriately, RSVP’s to

the Taste of Tuesday Buffet would be

greatly appreciated but walk-ins will also be

accepted. The buffet price will remain at

$13.95 adult and $9.95 for children 12 and

under. The January 30th Taste of Tuesday

menu will be available on-line in the

upcoming weeks.

We also plan to salute members based

upon their years of continued membership

support by listing their names in our

monthly newsletters. This month we are

starting off with the Classes of 1988, 1989

& 1990 (see page 5).

Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary,

CLUB NEWS

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Can you easily recall what you were doing back in 1988? Some of us were paying on

average $92,000 for a new home, 91 cents for a gallon of gas, 65 cents for a dozen

eggs, and under $10,000 for a new Ford Taurus. We were also going to see Rain

Man and Die Hard at the theaters, and printing Lotus 123 spreadsheets out on dot

matrix printers. In sports close to our hearts Stefan Edberg and Steffi Graf won

Wimbledon titles, while at The Masters Sandy Lyle hit a famous 7 iron from the

fairway bunker on #18 that led to a birdie and the victory. In addition to all the

above, 1988 also saw the opening of The Woodlands Club. As I’ve written about

several times before, Jim Vamvakias and Bob DeRice were Portland Country Club

members who dreamed of building a club that had an array of amenities that would

appeal to the entire family, and boy did they get it right. I have been fortunate to

visit many New England clubs during my tenure, as well as many other in various

parts of the country. Even after 30 years we are still ahead of the curve! I’m very

confident in saying that our club will continue to evolve in the coming years. With

the growth of new sports like pickleball and perhaps others that we don’t know

about yet, in addition to the never ending need to refurbish or redesign, it is exciting

to think about what our club might look like in another 30 years.

Thank you very much for your continued generosity with the annual staff Holiday

Fund. Everyone really appreciates it and you make a difference in the lives of all the

staff that are here to serve you. At the beginning of December, I too received a very

similar letter to the one you receive from a club I joined down in South Carolina

earlier this year. For the first time I was able to see it clearly from the opposite

perspective and I immediately sent a check off!

Until next month, we will see you around the Club,

Bill Robinson, CCM

Mary Anne

8 GOLF

JANUARY GOLF TIP:

This is a great time of year to focus on changes that

will help during the warmer months.

Flexibility and Weight Training: We have a

first class fitness staff here at The Woodlands. Take

advantage of them! Let them work with you to

develop a personalized stretching and training

routine. This will pay off in added yards and

increased stamina which means lower scores!

Keep Swinging: Tom Watson continues to amaze

me with the high level of golf he has maintained for

years. When he is at his home in Kansas City, he

swings a weighted club for five minutes, twice a day.

Keep those golf muscles active! We like the

Orange Whip, check it out! A quick video analysis

will help to identify any swing changes necessary.

Putt, Putt, Putt: First, let our professional staff

observe your stroke so that you practice positively

rather than groove a poor stroke. There are

several good practice tools available to aid in a

repeatable putting stroke. All you need is your

putter, some golf balls and a

carpet!

And Finally, Exercise Your Brain: There is no

shortage of golf instruction books. This winter is a

great time to learn about the mental aspect of golf.

Take a look at the rules of golf too. It is sure to save

you some strokes!

If you want to read and learn about the golf swing

and more, follow Michael Hebron on Facebook. He

is a National PGA Teacher of the year and always

interesting.

If you are on twitter follow Brandel Chamblee

(@chambleebrandel) and Lucas Wald (@lucaswald).

Both share good information and videos on the golf

swing. And just for fun, follow @darth_monty, a

parody account supposedly from Colin

Montgomery.

GOLF SHOP

WINTER HOURS

The Golf Shop will be CLOSED for the months of

January and February. The shop will reopen with

normal business hours for the 2018 season on

March 1ST.

For Junior Golf info, please check the Junior Golf

bulletin board or email John Mullen

([email protected])

To schedule a lesson with Doug, please email

[email protected].

You may also schedule a lesson with our

professional staff by email:

John Mullen: [email protected]

Paul Piveronas: [email protected]

Jake McVety: [email protected]

Thank you for your support.

Would you like to make 2018 the year you really improve your golf game? We

tend to treat the golf learning process differently from other activities that require

motor skills.

Here are the accepted steps for motor learning for Baseball:

-Make the team

-Go to scheduled practices

-Learn the basics- catching, hitting, throwing

-Do drills so basics become second nature

-Continue process throughout playing career

Here are the accepted steps for motor learning for Music:

-Find a qualified instructor

-Take regular lessons

-Learn the basics

-Practice between lessons

-Learn in a process from simple to complex.

Here is how most of us attempt to learn Golf:

-Go to driving range with a friend who plays a little better than you

-From this person, take advice such as “keep your head down”, “keep your left arm straight”, “take the

club straight back and straight through”

-Try out tips from your friends and the golf channel

-Using your driver, hit hundreds of balls to ingrain these habits

Why do we deviate from a successful formula when it comes to golf? Doesn’t make much sense, does it?

If one of your resolutions for 2018 is to have more fun on the golf course, consider this

version:

-Find an instructor who is qualified and who you “click” with

-Take regular lessons

-Learn the basics such as grip, aim, set up, swing path, putting, chipping, centered club face contact

-Do drills so that basics become second nature

-Practice correctly between lessons

-Learn in a progression from simple to complex

-Make improvement an ongoing process

Let our award winning professional staff help you make 2018 the year you have more fun (play better golf)!
