    PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

    Dear Parents

A very warm welcome back to another year at Kaikorai

Primary School and a special welcome to the many new families who

    started with us today.

We hope that everyone has had a chance to relax and enjoy spending

time together over the holidays and that your child is excited about

coming back to school this year.

We are very excited about the year ahead and working with your childthis year. One of our goals this year is to make our values more explicit

so that children are able to clearly articulate what makes for a great

Kaikorai student. These values are included in this newsletter and will

    referred to throughout the year.

    Kind regards,

    Simon Clarke

    SCHOOL NEWS

Meet the TeacherWe are holding a Meet the Teacher evening on Wednesday the 13th of February starting at

5.30pm for the Junior and Senior classes and at 6pm for the Middle Syndicate.

This meeting will take 20-30 minutes and it is not designed to talk about your childs needs asyou will have an opportunity in March to have an individual meeting. Your child will besupervised during this time by the staff.

The meetings will be in your childs room and teachers will discuss what learning will look like intheir classroom. They will explain their literacy and numeracy programme, homeworkexpectations and exchange contact details.

We would also like to take this opportunity to talk to as many parents collectively during thisevening. The Principal, Simon Clarke, would like to discuss the school values in more detail, theupcoming year and also the second stage of the uniform consultation. This will take place in theschool hall and will also be in split sessions with start times of 5.30 and 6pm. We hope that youare able to attend both the class and hall visit during this hour.

School Donation and other feesA donation of $65 (no separate photocopy fee this year) is sought so that we can provide the

highest quality resources and appropriate staffing for your child. This donation can be paid ininstallments via the accounts system in the school.

The school has signed on for another year of the mathletics.co.nz web site for students in year1-6. This is a very valuable resource as it helps your child develop math confidence and skills attheir own pace and it makes up an important part of our math programme. It is also able to beused both at home and at school The cost for this is $20 and will be put onto your account.

    SCHOOL NEWS

    Walking School Bus

A Walking School Bus operates every school morningfrom the corner of Highgate and Belgrave Crescent (at

the top of Ross St, just along from Roslyn Kindergarten)

    to Kaikorai Primary School.

The Walking School Bus leaves from this point each

school morning at 8.20am. Children can also join the

bus along the way. We walk straight along Highgate to the

Roslyn Village, cross Highgate there (via the 2 pedestrian

crossings) and then continue along Highgate to the

pedestrian crossing between Selkirk Street and Fifield

Street, cross over at the crossing, go around the corner

into Wright Street and then along to the school entrance.

The Walking School Bus is a fun, healthy, safe and

environmentally friendly way for children to get to school

    - and it means that parents dont have to deal with the

hassle of the busy traffic around the school and trying tofind a park!

Every morning 3 adult volunteers walk with the children

on the Walking School Bus to ensure that everyone gets to

    school safely.

All children are very welcome on the Walking School Bus.

    Road Patrols

The DCC has removed the pedestrian crossing on

Tyne St for a variety of reasons.

    1. It is part of an overall traffic management planthat includes a change in parking restrictionsand the inclusion of pedestrian controlled lightson Highgate Rd.

    2. DCC evidence suggests that children often useunsupervised pedestrian crossings in an unsafeway. They assume that they are safe because ofthe white painted lines and often cross withoutchecking.

We are able to create our own supervised safe zoneusing cones etc but this can only happen with thesupport of our parent community. We are veryshort on parent helpers this year and we will nolonger be able to provide morning supervision onthe Tyne St crossing until further notice. If you areable to help in anyway please contact Suse [email protected].
