Steganography, occupational safety and healthfor CRC’s 6th Faculty Conference

Mary Grace A. Untal

Two very interesting and timely topics were the focus of the College Research Center’s (CRC) 6th Faculty Conference held on February 18, 2009.

Mr. Danny G. Umoso (ITE) discussed his paper entitled “Encryption/Decryption Techniques for Information Security,” a research project which aimed to develop an information security program called steganography. This program was found capable of embedding or hiding

a file into an image file. Evaluation and performance tests using ISO/IEC 9126 (an evaluation tool for software development) were conducted for the acceptability of the program. The program proved to be effective in hiding any information and is easy to use.

Engr. Erwin B. Daculan (ECE), on the other hand, discussed his paper “Integrating Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in Educational Curriculum” based on the observations he had in the implementation of OSH

in the EE/ECE Department of the University of San Carlos in Cebu. He had been motivated by the very encouraging evaluation results of the three-year experience he had with OSH that he proposes incorporating the same in the courses offered in our College.

True to its word, FEU – East Asia College makes it possible for its students to connect with the industry. From February 24 - March 6, 2009, ten FEU-EAC graduates availed of the free English Proficiency Training sponsored by IBM-Daksh. Through the joint effort of Mr. Jarvy Muyargas, Director of IALAP; and Ms. Victoria Sabong, Assistant Manager for Recruitment Marketing and Channels of IBM-Daksh; the training was made possible. The English Proficiency Training handled by IBM Daksh held at the ERC gave a good exposure about the call center industry and the professional world to some FEU-EAC graduate participants. Mr. Emerson Ian Maristela and Mr. Roberto Anselmo Claudio, two seasoned trainers from the said company, handled the training for two weeks to help the participants improve their English communication skills. They were allowed to use English only during the training, which helped them improve their oral communication skills. Real-time corrections of mistakes committed were given to participants to help them avoid the same mistakes. Varied activities using English were utilized to bring out the confidence in using the language among the participants.

Aside from activities in English enhancement, the trainers provided the participants real call center training which included real company rules and regulations during the training, concepts, and some technical information necessary for call center agents. The participants then delivered and demonstrated in English all the concepts and skills taught to them. The following are the graduates who joined and survived the rigorous training:

Jonathan Arvin Pasion ECE Ro Jacquilin Leonor ECE Froi Jairo Beo ECE Ralph Waldo Bondoc ECE Aldrin Gerald Emeterio ECE Bryan Ong CS Rolando Araw Jr. ECE Reynaldo Mangaliman Jr. ECE Constancio Cariaga Jr. CPE Joseph Rogel Del Rosario ECE

Of the 15 participants at the start of the training, only ten were able to finish the program with flying colors. It was their clear goal to improve themselves, coupled with determination, hardwork and patience, that led them to complete the two-week training. On the last training day, invitation letters were given to those who passed the assessment. This means that if they apply in IBM, they have the privilege of a final interview and get rid of the other application processes usually undergone by ordinary applicants.

Almost all of the trainees gave positive comments about the training, because it definitely helped them improve their communication skills. Not only was their proficiency in English polished, but also their outlook in life and the business world as well. This was an opportunity that opened doors to many of them. Most of them are ECE graduates, but they saw this training as another venue for them to hone their skills in communication. They learned and discovered that in the call center industry, one does not stop at being an agent; if one is good and proves his worth, he can go up the ladder and be the next leader of the company (just like their trainers who both started as agents). The graduate trainees and their IBM trainers

as intermediaries who transform technology. Because of the rapid change in technology, he advised our graduates to continue updating themselves and be held for honesty and integrity in the workplace. Thus, he mused, moral and ethical values must be imbedded in the school curriculum. He also insinuated that teachers must be reeducated and their skills upgraded in major technologies. Besides, he noted, quality teachers produce quality students. The Philippines, according to Engr. Berba, has got several advantages in the recovery that’s going to take place after the global recession. He pointed out English language proficiency, large pool of trained and trainable workforce, and open opportunities for our graduates to be employed globally as some of our strengths.

“Vision without action is nothing more than an illusion, so we must move (towards that development).” But this vision, he said, can only be achieved if we respect and value our engineers (of progress); otherwise, we cannot expect real development. In the same occasion, three outstanding FEU - EAC graduates addressed the graduating batch and the guests. Jayson Jimenez, ECE graduate and recipient of Outstanding Student Leader Award, welcomed the audience while Rolando Araw, Jr., ECE Cum Laude graduate, delivered the Words of Appreciation. Andrew Caragan, CE graduate, delivered a testimony of how FEU - EAC changed his life – from a failure to an achiever. He inspired the audience to believe in second chances and in the possibility of positive change.

how these well-designed curricula are implemented in instruction. Much of the discussion was focused on, among others, the value-added services that the College is giving to the students. These value-added services are put into practice in all aspects of operations in the College, from the day the students apply for entrance exam until the day they get their school credentials. Likewise, other best practices highlighted in the presentation were the extensive internship program, the College’s industry-relevant curricula, faculty immersion, and state-of-the-art laboratories. It was quite heartwarming to note that the different best institutional practices discussed by other speakers are all being practiced at FEU - East Asia College. In a separate occasion, Ms. Cora Delgado of the ERC was also invited as Resource Person and Facilitator in the PSITE-NCR monthly seminar- workshop (MSW) held at the University of the East on February 18, 2009. The theme

of the MSW was “English Proficiency for I.T. Educators.” She discussed several topics related to the enhancement of English communication skills. The event was attended by more than 50 faculty members from different colleges and universities teaching IT courses. These recent activities that mirrored our school practices show that FEU - East Asia College is indeed a College of Choice!

About 40 participants from the parish joined and took the opportunity to improve their oral communication skills through the training. Activities in pronunciation, pitch, stress, accent and voice were provided for them to review how they can properly execute, read, pronounce, and deliver their talent and skill in sharing the words of God through reading orally the gospel of God in church. They were also able to use the state-of-the art language laboratory for practice, assessment and evaluation of the modules given to them. On the last day of the training, an oral diagnostic test and a culminating activity were provided for them to demonstrate the skill that they have either developed or improved during the training.

FEU-EAC graduates shining through Mary Grace A. Untal

Topping the list of this string of achievements was the school’s landing at the top of May 2009’s Civil Engineering Board Examination. Tying with three other students from three different schools with a rating of 96.5%, Engr. Sean Bryner S. Rey bested thousands of Civil Engineering board exam takers in the Philippines. Since 2007, the Civil Engineering department has been consistently producing topnotchers. Adding feather to the cap was the growing number of board exam passers among the different engineering specializations (see complete list of exam passers below).

In the objective of providing a holistic and diverse experience and training in research to the FEU - EAC community, the College Research Center (CRC) of FEU – East Asia College included in its activities the forging of linkages with universities outside the Philippines.

On April 15 -18, 2009, Dr. May Rose C. Imperial, Senior Director for Academic Affairs, and Engr. Edwin C. Obra, CRC Director, visited Taiwan to establish research linkage with Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU). Included in the visit was the identification of possible research areas of collaboration with CYCU and the specific programs for collaborative research projects. The linkage will greatly provide benefits to FEU - EAC since it offers Associates a chance to mingle with foreign researchers, be trained in the use of other research equipment, make use of the facilities of CYCU in their research projects, and be exposed to the current research trends of universities outside the Philippines.

In the short visit, the FEU -EAC representatives were able to meet with Prof. Shih-Hsu Huang (Chairman, Department of Electronic Engineering) and Prof. Yu-Kuen Lai (Department of Electrical Engineering) for the establishment of research collaboration for the FEU - EAC EEE Department, and with Prof.

Jia-Sheng Heh (Chairman, Department of Information and Computer Engineering) and Prof. Yuan-Hsiang Chang (Department of Information and Computer Engineering) for the FEU - EAC ITE Department. The representatives also met with Prof. Danny Wen-Yaw Chung, Director of Electronics and Information Technology Center. As agreed, Engr. Ronald Pascual of the FEU -EAC EEE Department, together with another Associate from the ITE Department, will be sent for training and exposure at CYCU for two-weeks.

For the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the representatives met with Prof. Jyh-tong Teng (Dean, Office of International Affairs). Included in the proposed MOU are:

1. Joint research activities

2. Exchange of academic materials and academic publications

3. Exchange of faculty members for research, lectures, and discussions

4. Encouragement of exchange graduate and undergraduate students for research, learning, and internship.

CRC hopes that more of these activities will be put into realization with the help of FEU - EAC Administration.

The College Research Council (CRC) of FEU – East Asia College headed by Engr. Edwin C. Obra, together with the Academic Directors and Research Representatives, held its Research Council Assembly with a series of seminars on November 27-28, 2008 at the Hotel Dominique in Tagaytay and on May 7-8 at Days Hotel, also in Tagaytay. The Research Council Assembly aimed not only to formulate plans and programs of the CRC but also to promote camaraderie among the participants and a sense of belongingness to the so-called “CRC family.”

During the first of the seminar series, Dr. Jonathan L. Salvacion, Dean of the Graduate Studies and Director for Research Promotion and Coordination of the Mapua Institute of Technology, opened the assembly with his speech on promoting a culture of research. He urged the group to actively engage in various kinds of research.

The workshop was divided into five sessions. The first session concentrated on goal-setting that would contribute to the realization of the new vision of CRC. The second session allowed the participants to provide insights for a new mission that would synergize with the modified vision of the college. After a series of

discussion, a new mission for the CRC was charted. With these new vision and mission for the Center, a new set of key initiatives was developed through evaluation of Key Result Areas (KRA) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Finally, using the SWOT analysis, the participants generated possible priority strategic options for the Center.

The second session of the seminar focused on a brainstorming task for the new programs and project ideas that support the strategies developed in the previous sessions. The last session was culminated by a discussion on various means of controlling, monitoring, and evaluating the proposed projects and plans.

Dr. May Rose Imperial, Senior Director for Academic Affairs, closed the afternoon session as she urged the participants to work hand in hand for the realizations of CRC's goals. She reminded the body that it is still a long way to go as she acknowledged the group's accomplishments.

Engr. Obra stressed that with the new set of objectives and plans, CRC is now ready to traverse to the attainment of its new vision and mission for it has set its sense of direction – to go where it wants to go and to be known how it wants to be known.

After a school year that was, the FEU – EAC Administration headed by the Human Resource Department treated the Associates to a day of relaxation and fun at the Loreland Farm Resort on April 28, 2009.

The above statement from the Art of War by Sun Tzu emphasizes the need to be prepared. To be prepared, there must be a plan, because without it, there is no sense of direction or clarity of purpose.

As such, what is planning? Planning deals with the overall direction of the work to be done. It includes forecasting future trends, assessing actual and potential resources, developing objectives and targets for future performance, determining the goals an organization will pursue, the products and services it will provide, and others.

Lately, technology has become a very important factor in planning. Changes in technology are leading many institutions to reconsider fundamentally the way they operate. Advances in information technology can affect practically all the aspects of business. Also, technology is responsible for the mushrooming of different tools for

This is done by constantly producing quality graduates who can analyze, design, and develop information systems to be used in the planning process of client-organizations. With these information systems as tools, organizations can understand better the forces that affect them so that they can better plan for the future. And a better plan produces better results.

Hence, we, at FEU-East Asia College, play a role in the continuing realization of the above scenario. Let us, individually and collectively, work out plans on how we can most effectively attain our goals. We can start off by being committed to the Mission and Vision of the College, as this will ensure that our efforts will contribute to the betterment of our nation!

“Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.”

corridors led to the mini- auditorium on May 22, 2009 for the annual College General Assembly. The program which was ably hosted by HSC Program Director, Ms. Bernadeth C. Cabico, had no less than FEU President Dr. Lydia Echauz in attendance. HR Director Titus Manuel reported on goals on behalf of the various departments. Senior Director for Academic Affairs Dr. May Rose Imperial looked back at the many achievements the college and its members have made in the past school year. The much-awaited second part of the occasion saw awardees coming up the stage one after the other as certificates and cash gifts were handed out for Perfect Attendance, Teaching Excellence, Model Employee, and 5S Compliance. Citations and gifts were also given to those who have been with the College for years.

Dr. Echauz capped the whole event with an inspirational speech which signaled the direction FEU-EAC is expected to take this school year as she reminded one and all what F-E-U stands for: Fortitude, Excellence and Uprightness.
