Eustace High School students continue to take advantage of the opportunity to take dual credit and certification courses that are funded by the district. The program pro- vides for the cost of tuition, textbooks, and certification exams for juniors and seniors. With the completion of the new Ag facility this past fall, Eustace was fortunate to ex- pand onsite welding certification courses. Forty-one students earned welding credit in the Fall semester. At the completion of the required courses, students will be able to earn an industry certification in Welding at Eustace High School. Working closely with TVCC, students have the capability of taking courses at the EHS campus, in Athens, or via the web. Students must meet the college admissions criteria for the course(s) they wish to take. They must also earn at least a grade of ‘C’ in those courses to be eligible to continue participation in the district’s program. For the Fall 2016 semester, one-hundred -sixteen EISD students earned college cred- its for English 1301, English 2322, Govern- ment, US History, College Algebra, Calcu- lus I, Speech, Psychology, Spanish, Eco- nomics, Criminal Justice, Welding, and Medical Law for a total of 206 college courses completed. Middle School News Art EMS 7th and 8th grade Art has rotated with Health. “New” art students, please remember to bring a 22x28 white poster board for making your portfolio. The 7th grade art students are respon-sible for bringing 6 wooden pencils, a small pack of colored pencils, hand held pencil sharpener, and a kitchen towel. The 8th grade artists bring markers, colored pencils, and pencil top eras-ers. These supplies help all of the art students, we share them throughout the year. Thank you so much and remember, “Art comes from the HeArt!” Pennies for Patients and The Great Kindness Challenge Penny drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is Janu-ary 9-20, 2017. Please donate to a great cause! The Great Kind-ness Challenge will be January 23-27, 2017. The intent is to create an environment of kindness and not one of bully-ing. There is a free app to use all year round: Great Kindness Challenge App. Also information can be found on Twitter: #GreatKindnessChallenge, and on Facebook: The Great Kind-ness Challenge. Six Flags Read to Succeed Program Our 6th grade students will be bringing home a reading log and information for the “Read to Succeed” program. Each student has the opportunity to receive a free ticket to Six Flags, all they have to do is read! Parents, please sign your child’s reading log each night that they read and make sure that it is returned to their 2nd period teacher by February 22nd. Incentive Trip Mrs. Smith will be taking a group of students to the movies on January 20th. In order to qualify for the trip students must have: an 85 or higher on their report card/progress report, 0 absences for the current six weeks and 0 discipline referrals. Immunizations Now that we’ve begun the second semester, it is also a good time to encourage the parents of our 6th grade students to go ahead and think about getting immunizations. Students entering the 7th grade have several immunizations they are required to have. They are required to have received a 2nd dose of the vari-cella vaccine (chicken pox), a meningococcal vaccine, and a Tdap vaccine (or adult tetanus). This is a requirement by the state of Texas for all 7th graders. Remember 7th grade students will not be able to attend school if they have not had these vac-cines. Each year we have had numerous students that we have had to send home the first day of school because they did not

have their immunizations up to date. It is best to go ahead and take care of this early. Frequently, those that wait until the last minute have a hard time being able to schedule appointments with doctor’s offices and clinics. Once your child has had the immunizations, please send records to the office so we can update their file. Free Breakfast and Lunch Eustace Primary, Intermediate, and Middle School are contin-uing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for School 2016-2017. Schools that participate in CEP provide healthy breakfasts and lunches each day at no charge for ALL students enrolled in that CEP school during the 2016-2017 School Year. E. L. Kirk & Jack Wallace Scholarships

A reminder that it is not too late to contribute to the E. L. Kirk and/or the Jack Wallace Scholarship Funds for the 2016-2017 school year. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors this year. You may mail your contribution to Eustace ISD, PO Box 188, Eustace, TX 75124. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions, please contact Coy Holcombe at (903) 425-5299, or by email at [email protected].

Substitute Teaching The start of the new year is a great time to consider a new adventure! If you enjoy working with children of all ages, consider becoming a substitute teacher. The role of the substitute teacher is a challenging one, which brings with it many rewards and the opportunity to assist in the development of Eustace’s greatest asset – its students. Applications for substitute teaching must be com-pleted and returned by each individual applicant to the superintendent’s office. All applicants for substitute teaching are required, as a minimum, to be high school graduate or hold a GED, and be at least 21 years of age. Once approved, applicants are required by state law to submit to fingerprinting. The district will provide the required paperwork for this process which costs indi-viduals approximately $54. A sub orientation meeting is held the week prior to the school board meeting to familiarize applicants with policies and daily routines when working as a substi-tute teacher. All substitute applicants are approved by the superintendent, and Board of Trustees, which meets on the third Monday of each month. For additional information, please listen to the ‘sub teaching’ podcast located under ‘job listings’ on the district’s home page at www.eustaceisd.net, or contact the Administration office.
