A Word from Your DS: Looking Ahead Together to the Cross and Empty Tomb
All Churches and All Pastors Joining in Worship on “Fat Sunday,” Feb. 10th
New Orleans has its big festivities before the start of Lent, culminating with “Fat Tuesday,” but here
in the Catskill Hudson District we will be having our own pre-Lenten celebration, as all our pastors
and all of our congregations will be joining together in observance of what we are calling (for want of
a better word) “Fat Sunday.”
At 4:00 in the afternoon, in 12 church buildings spread across the district, we will be gathering for
joyful services that look ahead through the solemnity of Lent to the culmination of our journey – the
cross of Jesus and the empty tomb. The Lenten season will afford us plenty of opportunities for sober
pondering of sin and suffering – rightly so – but these services on Feb. 10th will be one last chance to
sing our alleluias and remember the joy that is at the heart of our faith in the Risen Christ.
Twelve pastors have agreed to bring their neighboring
pastors together to begin planning these services, and
musicians and other laity from our churches will soon
be invited to participate. It is hoped that every service
will have combined choirs and/or praise bands from
the participating churches, some involvement of
children and youth, perhaps some drama or dance or
creative use of video, and other inspired elements of
worship that the Spirit may suggest. Banners from all
the churches would be a nice touch, and as true
Methodists we will naturally follow our worship with
a potluck supper.
In another aspect of coming together, we will all be
making an offering to “Imagine No Malaria,” joining
our gifts in support of this initiative of healing.
One additional idea for inter-church sharing is that we
could invite the churches that are worshiping together to have a shared Bible study during Lent. The
pastors have been invited to think about implementing this suggestion.
Why are we doing this, since every church already has a worship service on Sunday mornings?
There are a lot of reasons:
to remind ourselves that we are a connectional church,
to make use of the many gifts that are available when our people come together;
to have an inspiring worship service that exceeds what any church can do on its own;
and to bear witness to our communities that we are a people united by our faith in Jesus, the
Risen Lord.

Save the Date: District Conference, May 11th
at Camp Epworth
Specific plans are still to be worked out, but our District Conference for 2013 will be held on
Saturday May 11th
beginning at 1:00 and concluding with a barbecue dinner. All pastors are expected
to come to this annual meeting of the district and all laity are invited.
Inspiring worship will again be a central part of the conference, and a youth event will be planned,
paralleling the activities for adults that day.
Please avoid scheduling local church events for that day, and keep watch for more details in the
coming months.
Incubator Training Completed for 40-some clergy; New Sessions scheduled for 2013
In an effort to help our pastors grow in the knowledge and skills required to lead vital churches, the
annual conference has created the Incubator Program, a series of 8 modules that deal with some of the
most important dimensions of congregational life. This past fall more than 40 of our pastors came
together, in 4 locations, investing 8 full days in learning, spiritual support and deepening fellowship.
The instructors were Mark Del Giudice, Bette Sohm, John LeCain, and the team of David Collins and
Romi Abelova.
Because some of our pastors were unable to take the 8 modules this fall, and because we have some
new pastors among us, the instructors will be offering the modules again, all on Saturdays, at the
Memorial UMC in Shandaken (which is as close to the geographic center of the district as any of our
churches.)
The first Four modules have been scheduled, as follows:
Module 1: Covenantal Living, Feb. 2
Module 2: Worship, March 16
Module 3: Evangelism, April 20
Module 4: Small Groups (and Christian education for all ages), May 25
The remaining modules (Mission, Stewardship, Shared Leadership and Servant leadership) will be
scheduled for the Fall.
Specific invitations are being sent to pastors who have not participated in the training. Those who did
the modules this fall but may have missed a particular session, or who want to re-take a module, are
also welcome.

We have been giving voice to love through our Spirit-warmed hearts ever since.
These verses are from around the world, our churches and from our childhood memories.
Come to the "Song of the Heart" retreat
and bring your heartfelt words and musical instruments--whether percussive or melodic.

Your District Lay Leaders
From the Lay Leaders
As I write the world outside my window is enveloped in a pure, unbroken blanket of new snow. Two
storms have come together to leave the ground covered with a foot of protection for the season of
winter. I wonder if the earth receives this protective cover as eagerly as we do our down comforters
during these cold months of winter. Surely there is reason for nature and humankind to praise God
for all of this awesome creation!
As we enter these weeks after Epiphany we continue to sing our praise and gratitude for the beauty
and wonder of the Advent and Christmas season just past. So much beauty, so much wonderful
music, so much fellowship comes in this time of focusing on that incredible gift God gave the world
as he sent his Son into our midst. Our Christian calendar marks God’s purpose in sending his Son.
So as we move toward Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week, and on to Easter, let us keep faithful, let us
receive with open hearts our Savior!
Nearly all Charge Conferences have been held. We come to 2013 with many faithful elected laity
continuing their positions; at the same time many are newly elected. To the end that we may serve
God and our church well, as we say “yes” to these leadership positions the annual Leader to Leader
workshops will be held in January and early February. These are an opportunity to refresh if you are
a returning officer. They are an opportunity to better understand the role you have if you are newly
elected. Much effort and planning goes into these to make them easily available in our very large
district. The details are earlier in this issue of The Courier.
It is also not too early to be thinking about Annual Conference 2013. This year we will be in Holy
Conferencing with our newly elected Bishop McLee. Keep in mind, as well what your church will do
to contribute to No More Malaria. Our United Methodist Church has made a very large and
concerted commitment to this drive.
On a final note, please do take advantage of all that is offered in the e-mail from NYAC that comes as
Week in Review and News from New York Annual Conference. If you haven’t clicked on Chuck
Knows Church, please check it out as a brief, but informative little video that is a great teaching tool
for our Methodist denomination.
We are looking forward to seeing familiar folks at the Leader to Leader training and to meeting lots
of new folks as well!
Welcome 2013 and blessings to all,
Catskill Hudson District Lay Leaders
Fran Reed, for Margaret Howe and Toni Vessey

Round and About the District
St. James UMC presented 26 foam angels to the pastors of Sandy Hook UMC for distribution
to the families who are grieving. Each angel had a message from one of their children and
was designed to hang on a Christmas tree or decorate a home where sorrow is heavy right
now.

St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra, visited our
Sundown Church on December 24th
! (a.k.a.
Rev. Bob Kersten!).
As part of the United Methodist Church of Milton and Marlboro’s celebration of its 200
th
anniversary on November 11, 2012, Pastor Jody Spiak took a "circuit rider" journey. On
horseback, he rode from the site of the former Marlboro Methodist Church (now an empty lot
across the street from the Marlboro firehouse) to the
Milton Methodist Church building. Marlboro and
Milton merged their congregations in 1982. The ride,
which took approximately two hours, was meant to
honor the Marlboro church’s past and the Milton
Methodist Church, being symbolic of them becoming
one congregation. It also paid tribute to the circuit
riders. These clergy in the earliest years of the United
States were assigned to travel around specific
geographic territories to minister to settlers and to
organize congregations. Because of the distance
between churches, these preachers would ride on
horseback. Circuit riders were the men who founded
many of the Methodist Churches in the Hudson Valley.
Members of Southern Delaware Charge (Colchester Community UMC delivered
Christmas Boxes of Joy to church members who are alone or unable to come out to worship with
them. Christmas12 poinsettias and 14 “goodie bags” were brought to the elders of their church
and their community.
The Livingston Manor UMC, along with the Cornerstone Community Church, has started
holding Soupy Tuesday Suppers. They have had as many as 100 people at one of these suppers.

Milton and Marlboro UMC had a live nativity scene in early December for their community.
Kingston: St. James UMC once again held an All is Calm night. During the hours of 4 – 8
p.m. the church sanctuary was open and all in the community were invited to come and enjoy
the “calm” provided. They were encouraged to reflect on what they were grateful for, the
blessings God has granted them, or to just sit and be still. This event provided a moment in
the rush of the season for people to reflect on the meaning of the season in a peaceful and
quiet setting. People could stay for as long or short a period of time as they liked. A small
pamphlet of readings and poems was compiled for individuals to silently enjoy, soft
background music played throughout the event, and the sanctuary was beautiful decorated
with lit Christmas decorations.
Trinity UMC (Hudson) collected hats, mittens, and scarves
for distribution to the children in the Hudson City School
District. They were hung on a Clothesline of Caring, located
in the narthex of their church.
Community UMC and East Branch UMC) were invited to
participate in an alternative way of giving Christmas gifts.
Rather than buying CDs and DVDs, video games and cell phones, and a host of other things
people may enjoy but do not really need, they were invited to give a gift that could literally
change someone’s life: a gift to their Shared Ministry Giving in honor or in memory of
someone special to them. These funds help provide United Methodist chaplains for our
troops, provide Christian camp experiences for youth, provide medical services for people
living where there are no hospitals, provide school to teach children, scholarships for youth to
attend college, support missionaries working around the world, undergirds our disaster relief
work through UMCOR, and many other ministries. What a wonderful gift to give

Spiritual direction…
is a process of accompanying people on their spiritual journey and helping
them grow closer to God (or the sacred, the holy, or a higher power).
Spiritual direction is really not about being directed. Rather, it is
about being encouraged to draw closer to God, Identify and trust your own
experiences of God and integrate spirituality into your daily life. It helps to clarify how
you live out your unique relationship with God.
The privilege of a spiritual director is to journey with you as you deepen your
relationship with God. The journey takes place in the context of confidential one‐on-one
sessions with your spiritual director. Most often these happen once a month.
In a spiritual direction session, you reflect on the experiences of your daily life and
faith. As you contemplate, your director and the Holy Spirit help to gently guide you
to recognize God’s presence and grace in your life.
