FAITHFUL THOUGHTS

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are always listening for God's call to us as faithful believers and as a faithful church.

The action of God in our lives is to provide for each of us the experience of the resurrected Christ in the form of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we ignore or deny such an experience; sometimes we recognize and embrace this experience. But, the grace of God never ceases to provide this experience. Christian Faith is not only an acceptance of certain beliefs; it is essentially a personal encounter with the Spirit of Christ, an experience that gives meaning to the beliefs we affirm.

This experience of Christ may come to you in prayer, in the reading of the Bible, in conversation with others, in formal or informal worship, through reading and learning, through art and literature, through music and culture, through harmony with nature, in struggle and disappointment, in moment of conflict, in depth of emotion, in the joy of good works. As you can understand, this experience is available in almost endless ways, through families, friends, groups and communities, through laughter and tears - in fact, through everything human. God revealed God's love and presence in the human being, Jesus Christ, so that the presence of that Christ, the Spirit of that Christ, can be experienced in ail things human. In fact, Jesus Christ is the ultimate human being, fully and completely an expression of God within human experience.

Do not deny the possibility of experiencing the presence of Christ. Instead affirm this reality daily and look for the experience to happen.

You will be called by God to experience the presence of Jesus Christ. Then you will be able to share the experience of Christ.

Peace and Love, Wade

Working Together As One

I hope that everyone had a joyful Christmas and best wishes for a great New Year! The holiday season always seems to provide our church leaders with more than enough to do and this season did not disappoint!

We celebrated our Consecration Sunday in November and the results were very positive as a balanced budget was produced. We even had a fruitful discussion about the future of the church during the brunch afterward.

We've enjoyed several special services during the holidays including a Hanging of the Greens service, a contemporary Thanksgiving service, along with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. A couple of weeks before the big day, parents in the community were given an opportunity to drop their kids off for lunch and fun and games (including the Wii), giving the parents time off to go shopping, wrap gifts, etc.

The twice-weekly exercise class is growing and doing very well. The Care Ministries team also gave out several care baskets and chose a special Sunday to go caroling throughout the community. This ministry has touched several community members this year and we hope that it continues to grow. Be sure to read the newsletter thoroughly for all the details of these and other activities of the church!

As many of you know, our pastor, Rev. Wade Jarrett, works very hard, and is dedicated to helping us grow our ministry. He attends every meeting and brings a wealth of knowledge and ideas. Weare so blessed to have him as our Pastor and we appreciate everything he does. We are also very grateful for his wife Bonnie, who does a lot of work behind the scenes and supports Wade, and us, in many ways.

Doug MacEwen

Board Chairman

Eight people from the church gathered on December 11 th with grocery bags and care baskets full of food and goodies. We stopped at 15 homes in the community as well as church members that we have not seen in a while. We sang Christmas carols led by Karen Friot at 11 homes. The people were very appreciative and it was spirit lifting for us as well. We lived out the purpose of the Care Ministry team as well as the commandment that Jesus gave to us. There was plenty oflove shown on that day.

The Care Ministry is offering an emergency food pantry to those 55 and older. We are collecting items that can be stored in the freezer to be given to those people in need. Please see Jeannette Billings for information about donations. Please contact her as well if you know someone that is in need. We are not stock piling canned goods, but wish to provide fresh fruit, bread, milk, and meals for a few days to those

that need it. We appreciate your support of this mission.

Saturday, December 10 was our 2nd Annual Children's Activity Day at the church. A day for the parents to drop off their children - knowing they will have fun, while they go shopping or get things done around the house. We had 13 very energetic children, playing the Wii, decorating cookies and doing crafts. A big thank you goes out to Stacy Schuler for providing the Wii system, Anne Welytok, Courtney MacEwen, Kara Friot and her friend Rachel for coming and helping out with the children. Johnny Snow for vacuuming at the end - LOVE IT!! Thank you to Bernadette Sabo for coming and playing Christmas music on the organ. All in all it was a good day for the kids and us adults too.

E.J. Thomas Cluster UMM Veteran Honoree of2011

James Barber

On Veteran's Day Sunday, November 13, 2011, we came to honor and thank those men & women who have served. Serving in places we cannot pronounce or find on a map; but serve us they did. Jim is one of those who answered the call and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He did his Armory School basic training at Fort Knox. After graduation he was sent to Washington State and then shipped to Korea where he would be stationed. Jim worked in the motor pool and drove a tank. Let us never again question Jim's ability to drive.

Not only has Jim served his country with honor, but also he has brought that same style of service with honor to our church. Jim's ability to fill this sanctuary with beautiful music has enhanced many a worship service at Little Utica. Not only has he shared his gifts of music with us whenever asked, he also supports his church in many ways. Singing in our choir and leading the UMM Singing group as his health would allow, Memorial Fund Treasurer and scraped many a dish at our chicken dinners.

I personally want to thank him for his constant support of the UMM and it's many missions. He is always there to listen and give advice when 1needed it. Jim is a true friend and devoted to bringing joy through his music to so many others.

It was with great pleasure, that I on behalf of the UMM, presented Jim with this book, Strengtlifor

Seroice cro qot!anaCountry (])evotiona~ messages for those in the service of others.

God's blessings always, Donald R. Day, Sf. President UMM

In order to more simplify mailing correspondence, etc. to the church please use the church's proper mailing address: Little Utica United Methodist Church, PO Box 484, Phoenix, NY 13135. We have received several articles of mail including thank you cards that fortunately found their way to the PO Box. Luckily the post office in Phoenix is small and they know us, otherwise we may not get the mail. Mail addressed to Lamson Rd is incorrect since we don't have a mailbox at the church.

The Ladies Page

The ladies group purchased two roasters and two Bun coffeemakers for use at the church. We sent $200 to the Rescue Mission and $200 to Unity Acres. We collected 33 boxes for Operation Christmas Child paying the shipping charges. Thanks to all those who took the time to purchase items for these boxes which are sent all over the world. They do make children very happy.

We collected 20 sets of hats and mittens, 20 hats plus 30 extra pairs of mittens which we delivered to the Christmas Bureau in Baldwinsville; we also gave them a $100 donation. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project.

Through Heifer International we purchased a water buffalo at $250 and a flock of chickens for $60; these animals are given to people all over the

world which enables them to feed their families and provide a living. We again purchased 10 solar cookers which are sent to African countries - these cookers enable the

women to cook meals without having to walk long distances to gather wood. We have been participating in

this project for years. Our Craft Fair brought in over $600. Thanks to all who helped in the kitchen, contributed items for the

UMW table and baking for our sale. We are gearing up for 2012: our slate of officers remains the same. Our first meeting for the new year

is Wednesday, January 11 at 6:30 pm with the Prayer and Self-Denial Program. We hope you will join us. Thanks Jeannette for leading our meetings each month. The ladies appreciate it.

HANGING OF THE GREENS

We had a nice group for our pot luck supper and the program went well. We collected $127.25 which was sent to Warners UMC for their food pantry. The church was so beautiful for the Christmas season; hope you all had a chance to see it. Thanks to Goodman's Christmas tree Farm for donating another tree for our sanctuary. Our large Nativity figures (see page 9 for a picture) were set up in the sanctuary this year, in front of the choir loft. Thanks to Linda and Ray Honicker for storing the figures for us and transporting them and setting them up. They truly are a beautiful addition to our church during this Holy season. Thanks to John Snow, Jr. for taking orders for the poinsettias which were purchased and delivered from the Paine Nursery; 33 of them graced our sanctuary. Thanks to my committee who helped plan this year's program - Karen, Joyce and John. Also to all those who came Friday morning prior to the Saturday service to help with the predecorating. Joyce, thanks for the cookies and cocoa, too.

A BIG thank you from the University United Methodist Church in Syracuse for our help in selling pecans. The monies from this fund raiser help support the University Methodist Food Pantry. Our contribution to this effort was $222 (plus we got some really tasty nuts) and was just one more way we are part of the Hands4NY and the Anti-poverty programs.

Thanks to Helen Wolford for taking the lead on this project.

Basic Lay Speakers Course What is Lay Speaking all about & how is God call

ing you to serve? God calls everyone to proclaim the presence of God through what we say and do. Lay Speaking Ministries offers you a valuable education in multiple ministry areas. Lay Speaking Ministry goes beyond filling in for the pastor; it offers many options for serving, training, leading, caring, loving and reaclllng out to the community. A Lay Speaker is ...

*An active, supportive member of a United Methodist Church

*Eager to serve the church, community and world

*Well-informed on Scripture and on the doctrine, heritage and life of the United Methodist Church

*Committed to witnessing through church & community.

*Willing to improve his/hers skills by training for service.

Reverend Jarrett and I had the great pleasure to teach 8 very enthusiastic people who wanted to learn more about sharing the Good News and becoming more involved in lay ministries. The course ran for 5 weeks. They spent 15 hours in class time participation and 5 hours doing out-of-class preparation. They all passed the course and will be receiving their certificate in January at a morning service here at Little Utica.

We will be teaching our next Lay Speaking Course in the early spring. If you are interested please contact me.

Our December breakfast was held on the 10th at Little Utica with 27 in attendance. Wives were our honored guests. The guys cooked scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and stacks of pancakes, coffee, tea and orange juice. For desert, fresh fruit, granola, and bakery fresh donuts were served. Reverend Jarrett opened with prayer, our guests were introduced and the group welcomed Pastor Dean Flerrun.illg from Martville UMC.

After eating a hearty breakfast we settled into the business side of the meeting. Secretary & treasure reports were given and all old business was discussed. We are going to be more actively involved with the Wounded Warrior Project in 2012.

Doug MacEwen did the program this month. He took us through his seminar on "Iron Sharpens Iron" which he attended in November. This is a new and different way for us to do more in Men's Ministries. Thank you Doug for the very informative presentation. Many of the guys are so looking forward to learning more about this project.

An award letter of thanks was given to me for my time as UMM President. I was very humbled by the comments and grateful for the fellowship we all share. It has been a great pleasure for me to serve these past 5 years. A lot has been done, much more to do. Paul Thompson was welcomed as our new UMM President. I am so very proud of Paul, he will take the UMM into new and exciting areas of men's ministries.

Our Haiti mission is complete! Ernie will be sending the check to UMCOR for Tom & Bob's Haiti mission. They have their 10-person team all set and are just working out details before they go in May. I want to thank the men & women of this UMM cluster for their hard work in raising these needed funds. It was not easy but we did it. The UMM wants to give special recognition to the Marcellus UMC, Warners UMC, Little Utica UMC and the women of Warners for the extra donations. Those donations helped us reach our goal and will give extra money for the team to buy more needed supplies.

Page 7

We are still raising money to send down with the team. More money to give to the team means more needed supplies can be bought; now that's a goal worth reaching for. We still have TShirts for sale and if you choose to support any of our many missions; please make checks payable to the E.J.Thomas Cluster UMM and in the memo write Haiti Fund or General Fund and mail it to:

STUDY TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS: With the support and guidance of the Crossroads District Superintendent, Darryl Barrow, and a consult

ant, Jeff Hodges, nine churches agreed to participate in "A Process for Assessment of Local Church Potential (known as Paragraph 213 of the United Methodist Book of Worship).

The process included establishing a Study Task Force of Clergy and Laity who gathered data about each church from internal (church members) and external (demographics, Annual Conference statistics, and qualified individuals) resources. This information was categorized into essential dynamics necessary for a growing church with a vital mission and ministry and a vision of reversing the decline in United Methodist Churches. The Paragraph 213 Consultant and the Study Task Force identified four areas of instability that are caused by the decline and which must be corrected if any of these churches are to cease declining and start to grow.

1. Spiritual formation and leadership development. 2. Financial management and stewardship of resources. 3. Aging out of congregation and inability to attract an intergenerational congregation. 4. Organizational structure and inability to effectively conduct ministries of nurture, outreach, and witness.

The recommendations are: The churches in this study form Cooperative Parishes to develop a relationship of trust and mutuality

that results in coordinated church programs and ministry, supported by appropriate organizational structures and policy.

The churches engage in the exploratory form of a cooperative parish using the "Probe Staff' model, which is composed of pastors and other staff assigned to a geographic area to explore possibilities for cooperation and developing strategies for improving ministry. The Probe Staff configuration recommended for our church is: Little Utica, Phoenix, and Warners UMCs.

Each Probe Staff will consist of clergy and lay leadership from each church, working with district, conference and denominational resources, to explore possibilities for cooperation and develop strategies for improving ministry. Using a grass roots approach, this core group ofleaders (also known as the Probe Staff), will:

- Help people see that the work of the church stretches beyond their own congregation. - Work cooperatively to address the short term and long term issues that have led to sustained decline of the

churches. - Will design an ongoing planning and evaluation process for cooperative parish ministry. - Serve as a sounding board for ideas and concerns. - Consider ways to deal with problems that may arise. (Chapman, 2003, p.86)

Churches will have until on or around January 15,2012 to prepare a response to these recommendations. For churches that accept the recommendations, it is expected that Probe Staffs will begin to organize on or around February 2, 2012 and meet monthly on an on-going basis for prayer, study and fellowship and planning.

Churches must be willing to make major changes in the way they approach ministry. While the churches do have spiritual gifts and have engaged in some effective ministries, the four barriers are systemic issues that are undermining long":tem effectiveness.

The Task Force does not believe any church can address these issues alone. Sharing in ministry, with cooperative approaches to idea and resource sharing, is key to effective change.

These issues will require an intense approach that includes trainings and resources from the local, district and conference level. Team approaches to leadership development, spiritual nurture, and stewardship development are just some of the issues that must be addressed in an intensive, comprehensive manner.

Our church Study Task Force participants will respond to these recommendations at a Church Council Meeting. Prayers are essential, as always, and questions are welcome.

Stained-Glass Window Repair Drive We have almost completed our project. Window 13 was taken in September. We had to wait a while

before it was returned. The window repair company had to wait for the special glass to come in. There is just two more to do! They will be done as soon as nice weather returns. In just four years, we as a small church, raised the money needed to repair all these windows. The re-dedication service for these windows will be announced soon.

Here is a report on how much we have collected as of December 12 2011. We have taken in $15,350.00 in donations and $563.50 was transferred from the Steeple Fund and to date $2.68 in interest giving us $15,916.18. Thank you for the generous giving. It won't be long now and all fifteen of our treasured windows will be back to their original luster & beauty. Just a Thought... by John Snow, Jr.

When I was attending college (the first time), I used to write articles for this newsletter called "just a thought ... " Well I was just thinking that maybe I should start writing again. So, here goes.

I attended a Bible study led by Pastor Wade. I was coming from work and left my Bibles at home. (I tend to study with more than one translation.) I pulled out my phone, went to my apps (phone applications), found the Bible app, and there I was set. I have the entire Bible on my phone in 20 different translations. Not only do I have that, but I have a flashlight app, a "where did I park my car?" app, radio, camera, video camera, heart rate monitor, gas mileage tracker, GPS, and a few others. There are about 10,000 apps that I can download. It is amazing that in this age of information and technology, we replace other things. We see the amusing iPhone commercials where something ridiculous is suggested and the response is "we have an app for that." I can get my email, order pizza, (fmd where I parked my truck), text message my sister, get the latest news bulletins, check the weather, set my alann clock, watch movies, and check my Facebook account from my phone. But guess what? I can't download an app to experience the love of God.

Church is the only way for me to get that. At least church is supposed to be the way I get it. It is the one thing that the church has up on technology. And I think it is the one way the church will never be able to be replaced. But how does the church meet that need? It is not about the music. I can listen to over a million songs on my phone. It is not the sennons. I can tune in and watch/listen to sennons from all over the world on my phone. It is not seeing my friends and neighbors, half of them are on Facebook.

So how can a church compete? By having engaging worship experiences. I started my advanced lay speaking course and day one we were asked, "What is your theology of worship?" Well, I was horrified by that! How do I answer, what does it even mean? I found out I was not the only one that didn't have a clue. And the number one response to that question by United Methodists is, it is what we do on Sunday morning.

Results from a survey of United Methodist churches - one that is rather disturbing to me personally - is that 3-out-of-5 regular worship participants are perfectly satisfied with a "good show." Give us hymns we like, let the choir sing, preach an entertaining sermon, and let me talk with my friends. Don't forget the comfortable pews, good parking, silent children, and beautiful windows.

I'm not trying to be cynical, and I know I am exaggerating. My point is: how often do we express our thoughts on the substance of worship instead of Iisting what we like and dislike about the contents of the worship service? I am guilty ofthat. Worship is about being engaged with the Holy Spirit. We make worship about us when it is about God. I realized that if we lack a clear understanding of our theology of worship, we lack the foundation to build a church community. Worship should not be a tool for evangelism, missions, education, stewardship, fund raising, or making announcements. None of these are bad and there are times and ways to do these things. We need to have time to worship though - a time to have an integrated experience of the community of faith with and for God. We can be the Little Utica UMC App; cell phones not required. Just a thought...

Our church was given this beautiful Nativity by Mr. Dan Case, in 2010. It makes a wonderful addition to our sanctuary for this Holy season.

There's Something Magic Garnett Ann Schultz

There's Something truly magic

When first the snowflakes fall,

To blanket all the Winter world

To cover over all.

A canopy of sparking white

Within the calm and still,

Such beauty as the stars look down

To light the far off hill.

Tis truly something magic

To dress each naked tree,

Each branch IS wrapped in splendor =r: For happy hearts to see. u
