Dear Friends,

Spring Library Closings

Friday, April 3 - Staff In-Service Day

Sunday, April 12 - Easter Sunday

There is an air of excitement around the Elyria Public Library System, and it’s not just anticipation of the holiday season. In this newsletter, we have information about lots of great programs in store for you in the coming months, as well as some personnel news, and a quick update on the building program.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Elyria Public Library System, I would like to welcome our newly appointed Fiscal Officer, Robert Schirhart. Rob comes to us with 20+ years of experience in public finance. He earned his Bachelor’s and MBA degrees from Baldwin Wallace and holds an Ohio Treasurer’s License. Rob is a resident of North Ridgeville, with his wife Kris and two children. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, golfing, and playing the drums. We are excited to have Rob on board.

The new South Branch, located at 340 15th Street, opened on November 11th. No one was more excited than Bobby Taylor, Jr. (pictured) who was on hand to welcome the community to our first Makerspace, which was funded by the OUR F.A.M.I.L.Y. Foundation, founded by his parents, Emma Jean and Bobby Ray Taylor Sr.

The South Branch renovation transformed a vacant, blighted building into a community asset. Be sure to stop by and see it. We’ve been told we set the bar high, and we look forward to continuing to amaze you with our new buildings.

Staff members in Outreach, System Services, Bookmobile, Marketing and Communications, IT, Technical Services, and Delivery were excited to move to their new location in our warehouse on Taylor Street. We are joined there by the Friends of the Library, who do their book sorting for their annual sale at the site. It is home to our fleet vehicles. Pictured is our cargo van, which delivers books and supplies among our six sites.

On October 18, 2019, we broke ground for the new Keystone library, located on Commerce Drive in LaGrange. Sixty excited people were present for the groundbreaking ceremony. Pictured with Library Director, Lyn Crouse are Village of LaGrange Mayor Kim Strauss, and Mary Kay Gates of the Village Zoning Department. If you drive down Rt. 301 south of LaGrange, you will see that construction is underway.

We will be issuing a special newsletter in January 2020 to bring you fully up to date on the status of the entire building project.

Until then, I remain

Fifty years ago, May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded nine when they fired their weapons during a confrontation over the Vietnam War at Kent State University. Lasting all of thirteen seconds, the shootings have reverberated both in the personal memories of those who were there and the larger historical memory. This talk examines the contours of the battle over the meaning and memory of the shootings, a seminal event of the 1960s. The event illuminates not only the specific tensions and issues of the era, but also broader questions about democracy, authority, and violence.

Dr. Gregory Wilson is Professor of History at the University of Akron where he teaches courses in United States, Ohio, environmental, and public history. His published work includes Above the Shots: An Oral History of the Kent State Shootings (with Craig Simpson), Ohio: A History of the Buckeye State (with Kevin F. Kern), and Communities Left Behind: The Area Redevelopment Administration, 1945 – 1965.

On May 4, 1970, four students were killed and nine injured on the campus of Kent State University by Ohio National Guard during a Vietnam War protest. Nearly forty years later, David scripted a play, May 4th Voices, based on the ongoing Kent State Shootings Oral History Project. This talk includes readings of excerpts from the play and discussion about the process of writing and staging; as well as the power of testimony in the oral history archives, which includes over 110 interviews that document first-person narratives and personal reactions to the events of May 4, 1970.
