Gospe !t 2"1#12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,in the days of King Herod,
behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage.
When King Herod heard this,
he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.!ssembling all the chief "riests and the scribes of the
"eo"le,
He in#uired of them where the $hrist was to be born.
%hey said to him, “&n Bethlehem of Judea,
for thus it has been written through the "ro"het'
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler,
who is to shepherd my people Israel.”
%hen Herod called the magi secretly
and ascertained from them the time of the star(s
a""earance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
“)o and search diligently for the child.
When you have found him, bring me word,
that & too may go and do him homage.

!nd behold, the star that they had seen at its rising

%he main $hristmas story in +atthew-s )os"el is the
account of the visit of the +agi. %his story shows us that
Jesus is not only the aviour of the chosen "eo"le. He has
come also for the rest of humankind. Jesus is not only king
of the Jews, but the ho"e of the )entiles, all the non/Jewish
"eo"le of the earth0us.

January 13th. THE $APTIS! OF THE %O&'
Gospe" %u(e 3"1)#16* 21#22
The people were filled with expectation,
and all were asking in their heartswhether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying,“I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. e will baptize you with the oly !pirit and fire."
#fter all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, hea$en was opened and the oly !pirit descendedupon himin bodily form like a do$e. #nd a $oice came from hea$en,“%ou are my belo$ed !on&with you I am well pleased."
'eflect( Luke’s account of the baptism is distinctive because it
focuses on Jesus in a moment of prayer
%he ba"tism of Jesus is recounted by the )os"els of
+atthew, +ark and 1uke in slightly different ways. %he
"eculiar feature of 1uke(s account is that it focuses on whatha""ened after the ba"tism while Jesus was in "rayer. 1et
us e2amine the "assage in detail.

There was a wedding at Cana in alilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also in!ited to the wedding.
"hen the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him,
#They ha!e no wine.”
And Jesus said to her,
#"oman, how does your concern affect me$ %y hour has
not yet come.”
&is mother said to the ser!ers, #'o whate!er he tells you.” (ow there were si) stone water *ars there for Jewish
ceremonial washings,
each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus told the them, #+ill the *ars with water.”
o they filled them to the brim.
Then he told them, #'raw some out now and ta-e it to the
headwaiter.”
o they too- it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water
that had become wine,
without -nowing where it came from
although the ser!ers who had drawn the water -new ,
the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
#/!eryone ser!es good wine first,
and then when people ha!e drun- freely, an inferior one;
but you ha!e -ept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in
alilee
and so re!ealed his glory, and his disciples began to
belie!e in him.

he miracle at Cana reveals the fundamental elements of
the spiritual life%his incredibly rich te2t has many resonances with other
key "assages in cri"ture, and it evokes many themes of
the s"iritual life. %he im"ortance of the "assage is
underlined by its closing lines, which state that the miracle
at $ana was "erformed by Jesus as the “beginning of his
signs. &n the original )reek, the word for “beginning is
arche, and refers to the first in terms of importance, not
only in chronological terms. %his sign in )alilee is of "rimary im"ortance because it contains elements that are
fundamental for the whole of John(s )os"el, and also for
the s"iritual life.

Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw u"
accounts of the events that have taken "lace among us,
e2actly as these were handed down to us by those who
from the outset were eyewitnesses and ministers of the
word, & in my turn, after carefully going over the whole
story from the beginning, have decided to write an ordered
account for you, %heo"hilus, so that your 32cellency maylearn how well founded the teaching is that you have
received.
Jesus, with the "ower of the "irit in him, returned to
)alilee4 and his re"utation s"read throughout the
countryside. He taught in their synagogues and everyone
"raised him.
He came to 5a6areth, where he had been brought u", andwent into the synagogue on the abbath day as he usually
did. He stood u" to read and they handed him the scroll of
the "ro"het &saiah. 7nrolling the scroll he found the "lace
where it is written'
The spirit of the 2ord has been gi!en to me, for he has
anointed me.
&e has sent me to bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to capti!es and to the blind new sight,
to set the downtrodden free,
to proclaim the 2ord3s year of fa!our
He then rolled u" the scroll, gave it back to the assistant
and sat down. !nd all eyes in the synagogue were fi2ed on
