Hey now,

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to all!

With the new year comes a time for people to look back at how they feel 2019 was for them and their

family and friends in comparison to other years. It also is a time to focus ahead with hope at what the

year ahead may hold. For those that do not put a little reality in their forecast they may be back to

some of the former eating habits and exercise regimen (or lack thereof) within a few weeks. Thus, let’s

plan wisely as we go into 2020 ☺.

There are many things that started out near the end of last year and will play themselves out in the first

few months of the year we are now in. Without naming or addressing any one event in particular, I

would hope that in all that lies ahead we would concentrate on the principle of truth. Now like some

of you when I hear the word truth I think of the character in the play and movie yelling out, “You can’t

handle the truth.” Be that as it may, I think the more appropriate encounter to think about is Jesus

when Pontius Pilate asks him, “What is truth?”

Now to ensure we do not get into a philosophical treatise that would take a decade of these notes to

only begin to address, I think we can think about what is truth by looking at what it is not. With all the

talk of ‘false news’ in the past, we have to be grateful for the truth that comes to us from the media

outlets. While every channel puts its own slant on the news it is reporting we need someone to tell us

the facts (the who, what, why, where, when and how that should be the aim of good journalism). We

need to know that we have relied on the news to tell us of the horrors of war (think Walter Cronkite and

how his words changed the mindset of many), the corruption of our government (think Iran-Contra

hearings), the atrocities of foreign powers (think of Kosovo and Serbia or Rwanda), and the list can go

on and on.

As I said we need to know the facts and listen to all sides of a situation before we can make our

decisions (although judgments would be a better word that describes what we do). Thus, the news

media will not give us the whole unbiased picture and if we think that a political party or person from

such a party will give us the truth, then we are deceiving ourselves. Even a particular church does not

hold the power of truth completely for the fullness of truth only reigns in Jesus the Christ who called

himself, the way, the truth and the life.

In this coming year we need to open up our minds to listen to the words of our purported enemies as

they also have elements of the truth with which to enlighten us. If we only listen to those people who

have the same beliefs, whether in politics, science, religion or a host of other topics then we will never

arrive any closer to the truth at the end of the year than we did at this moment in beginning 2020. The

ones that merely listen to one version of the truth (unless it is the truth of Jesus Christ himself) are

misguided and foolish. The ones that simply believe what they are told are not listening to the truth but

a carefully orchestrated web of lies called propaganda. Such a version of that ‘truth’ can be deadly

for those who believe it and past years are full of the stories where propaganda replaced truth. Let us

not start this year with our minds closed to all information and think that only one channel, one sound

byte, one person or one of anything can give us the truth. For there is only One that is the answer to

Pilate’s question and that is Jesus, and if He tells us something that runs counter to what the world

teaches and we still believe the world then maybe it is true that we cannot handle the truth.

¡Feliz Navidad y un bendecido año nuevo para todos!

Con el nuevo año, llega un momento para que las personas recuerden cómo sintieron que el 2019 fue para

ellos, sus familiares y amigos en comparación con otros años. También es un momento para planear el

uturo con esperanza en lo que puede deparar el próximo año. Para aquellos que necesiten una pequeña y

realista meta en sus planes, pueden regresar a algunos de los hábitos alimenticios anteriores y el régimen

de ejercicio (o la falta de ellos es entonces que pueden empezar nuevos hábitos) en unas pocas semanas.

Por lo tanto, planifiquemos sabiamente a medida que avanzamos hacia 2020.

Hay muchas cosas que comenzaron cerca del final del año pasado y se desarrollarán en los primeros

meses del año en que estamos ahora. Sin nombrar ni abordar ningún evento en particular, espero que en

todo lo que se avecina nos podamos concentrar en el principio de la palabra verdad. Ahora bien, como

algunos de ustedes, cuando escucho la palabra verdad, pienso en el personaje de la obra y la película

gritando: "No se puede manejar la verdad". Sea como fuere, creo que el encuentro más apropiado para

pensar es Jesús cuando Poncio Pilato le pregunta: "¿Qué es la verdad?"

Ahora, para asegurarnos de no entrar en un tratado filosófico que tomaría una década en tratar estas

notas para comenzar a comentar, creo que podemos pensar en lo que es verdad mirando lo que no es.

Con toda la charla de "noticias falsas" en el pasado, debemos estar agradecidos por la verdad que nos

llega de los medios de comunicación. Si bien cada canal pone su propio enfoque en las noticias que

informa, necesitamos que alguien nos diga los hechos (quién, qué, por qué, dónde, cuándo y cómo ese

debería ser el objetivo del buen periodismo). Necesitamos saber que hemos confiado en las noticias para

contarnos sobre los horrores de la guerra (piense en Walter Cronkite y cómo sus palabras cambiaron la

mentalidad de muchos), la corrupción de nuestro gobierno (piense en las audiencias Irán-Contra), las

atrocidades de potencias extranjeras (piense en Kosovo y Serbia o Ruanda), y la lista puede seguir y seguir.

Como dije, necesitamos conocer los hechos y escuchar todos los lados de una situación antes de que

podamos tomar nuestras decisiones (aunque los juicios serían una mejor palabra que describe lo que

hacemos). Por lo tanto, los medios de comunicación no nos darán una imagen imparcial y si pensamos

que un partido político o una persona de ese partido nos darán la verdad, entonces nos estamos

engañando a nosotros mismos. Incluso una iglesia en particular no posee el poder de la verdad por

completo porque la plenitud de la verdad solo reina en Jesús el Cristo que se llamó a sí mismo, el camino, la

verdad y la vida.

En el próximo año, debemos abrir nuestras mentes para escuchar las palabras de nuestros supuestos

enemigos, ya que también tienen elementos de la verdad con los que nos pueden iluminar. Si sólo

escuchamos a aquellas personas que tienen las mismas creencias, ya sea en política, ciencia, religión u

otros temas, nunca llegaremos más cerca de la verdad al final del año que en este momento al principio

2020. Los que simplemente escuchan una versión de la verdad (a menos que sea la verdad de Jesucristo

mismo) están equivocados, son necios y tontos. Los que simplemente creen lo que se les dice no están

escuchando la verdad sino una red de mentiras cuidadosamente orquestada llamada propaganda. Tal

versión de esa "verdad" puede ser mortal para aquellos que lo creen y los años pasados están llenos de

historias donde la propaganda reemplazó a la verdad. No comencemos este año con nuestras mentes

cerradas a toda la información y pensemos que solo un canal, un byte de sonido, una persona o cualquier

cosa nos pueden dar la verdad. Porque solo hay Uno que es la respuesta a la pregunta de Pilato y ese es

Jesús, y si Él nos dice algo que va en contra de lo que el mundo enseña y todavía creemos en el mundo,

entonces tal vez sea cierto que no podemos manejar la verdad.
