By Mike HastTHERE are no signs on Peninsula Link showing traffi c where to exit to reach Hastings and the Western Port side of the peninsula.

Lisa Dixon of Western Port Tourism, which was re-formed last winter after a hiatus of three years, said it was very disappointing and a blow to the revival of tourism in the region.

“There are no signs to Tyabb, Hast-ings or Somerville and also none directing people to tourism destina-tions,” she said.

Linking Melbourne Authority, the state government’s freeway manage-

ment body, said there were no signs as the authority “did not wish to create issues in local communities by encour-aging excessive truck usage on roads that are not designed or built to carry large volumes of heavy vehicles”.

LMA community and stakeholder manager Gemma Boucher said the au-thority had “carefully considered both direction and tourism signage for Pen-insula Link in conjunction with South-ern Way [the consortium that owns the road], Abigroup [the freeway builder], VicRoads and Tourism Victoria”.

“Like all major road projects, there can be initial concerns regarding direc-

tion signage on opening and it is there-fore diffi cult to satisfy the expectations of all road users,” she said.

“Feedback from road users is very welcome so concerns can be brought to the attention of the appropriate re-sponsible authorities.

“In light of comments received, LMA has already commenced a pro-cess of reviewing signage on Peninsula Link. We will also extend this review to cover the broader corridor.

“Together with VicRoads and South-ern Way, LMA will make any changes that are deemed necessary.”

Ms Boucher said that since opening

Peninsula Link, “staff from LMA have met with community representatives to explain the background to the develop-ment of the signage scheme”.

Ms Dixon, who is also president of Western Port Chamber of Commerce, said signs to Western Port should be installed at Frankston-Flinders, Bun-gower and Mornington-Tyabb roads.

“There should also be brown tour-ism signs letting motorists know there is a new tourism information offi ce in Hastings,” she said.

fi ces in Frankston and Dromana, which is 47 kilometres away.

“Staff at the Frankston tourist infor-mation offi ce have had people walking in and asking for directions to Western Port,” she said.

WPT is also seeking so-called “hero destination” signs that display large photos of tourism attractions on West-ern Port.

By Keith PlattFISH in the decommissioned Devil-bend Reservoir avoided the lure of the hook last week when access to the wa-ter was closed.

Early last week the Parks Victoria website made no mention of the clo-sure, and anglers were disappointed to discover they were not able to use the much-publicised boardwalks or pon-toons, which opened in November.

The website was later changed to say that “scheduled works” to be completed by the end of March 2013 (weather permitting) “may result in some temporary closures and disprup-tions to public access”.

As well as the timber work, it is un-derstood some tracks around the wa-terline had to be re-sited after being fl ooded by rising waters.

When it was fi rst proposed as a pub-lic park, authorities predicted the res-ervoir would never be more than 60 per cent full because its content had

historically been piped in from Car-dinia Reservoir. However, water has recently been released into Devilbend Creek to lower the reservoir’s levels.

Parks Victoria chief ranger Libby Jude said fi shing was still possible in the reservoir by walking along the track to Daangean Point, although work on the track and fi shing platform closer to the picnic ground could take two months.

The 1005-hectare Devilbend Natural Features Reserve has about 250 hec-tares of water, making it the largest in-land body of water on the Mornington Peninsula.

Access is limited to the fi ve-hectare picnic area off Graydens Rd. The pic-nic area opens 6am-8pm, although the park is accessible to pedestrians at all times through a small car park in front of the main entrance gate.

POLICE took advantage of the fact that a fair slice of Melbourne was visit-ing the Mornington Peninsula over the Australia Day weekend, turning out in force to nab hundreds for various of-fences as well as outstanding warrants.

The Sherrif’s Offi ce and government agencies including the Environment Protection Authority and VicRoads also benefi ted from the blitz, which included an automatic number plate recognition operation on Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

Of more than 6000 vehicles scanned

during the operation, police nabbed 31 people for licence and registration of-fences, the EPA issued 13 notices for unsafe emissions, and VicRoads handed out 16 notices for defective vehicles.

But it was the Sherrif’s Offi ce that had a fi eld day. There were 973 out-standing warrants identifi ed with fi nes owed totalling almost $305,000.

Also over the weekend, during Operation Limit, police detected 26 drivers who were either disqualifi ed, suspended or unlicensed, 51 unregis-tered vehicles and eight people who

had tampered with or otherwise con-travened interlock devices designed to stop drink-drivers from reoffending.

Sergeant David Collins of the high-way patrol in Hastings said Peninsula Link coped well with the fi rst week-end of extremely heavy traffi c since it opened on Friday 18 January, despite congestion at the Frankston end on Monday night.

There had been “a couple of minor prangs”, he said, including two people who had run off the freeway during a lapse in concentration.

HASTINGS MOWERS2013 FRANKSTON FLINDERS RD, HASTINGS - PH: 5979 1382OPEN 7 DAYS

A SOMERS fi rey, a Mornington youth worker and the Disabled Surfers Asso-ciation event “Let’s Go Surfi ng” have won Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Australia Day awards.

Bruce McCallum won the 2013 Citi-zen of the Year for “his contribution and dedication to the community, in particular to the Somers Fire Brigade as well as his involvement in educa-tion”, said the shire’s citation.

“Bruce has been a member of the brigade for more than 39 years, having joined in 1973. In 1984 he was elected to an offi cer’s position and has contin-ued as an offi cer since then, with 10 years as captain.

“Bruce was a member of the Somers Yacht Club for 25 years, a member of Somers Foreshore Committee for 17 years (including eight as chairman) and a member and president of Somers Primary School council.”

Mr McCallum is a Justice of the Peace and was a part of Woodleigh School senior campus for 37 years in-cluding running a marine studies camp at Flinders, chairing a pastoral care structure review, staff observer on the school board since 1991, and Director of Enrolments since 1999. He retired last year.

Sam Hearn is the shire’s 2013 Young Citizen of the Year.

The shire citation states: “Sam has been an inspiration in the community, in particular working with ‘at-risk’ kids in the Mornington Park Primary School region.

“Feeling so overwhelmed at the need for positive, affi rming relation-ships being established, Sam decided to move from Mt Martha to Tanti Park

[in Mornington] to open up his home and his life to the youth of the area.

“He has mobilised many adults to engage with youth, either through the school’s ministry or via the Jigsaw Ministry attached to New Peninsula Church.

“After fi nishing his psychology degree at Monash with exceptional results, Sam decided to devote his at-tention to the school’s ministry. His passion is to see every school on the peninsula have the support they need to holistically prepare kids for life out of school.”

The school programs he runs include one for “disconnected” year 8-10 boys,

breakfast in schools, lunchtime con-nections and events, and a camp for young people to experience outdoor activities.

Mr Hearn mentors young boys, helps run a youth program, helped set up a craft group at Mornington Park pri-mary, and has been involved with Rye Red Frogs, a national organisation of volunteers supporting school leavers during Schoolies Week celebrations.

“Let’s Go Surfi ng” is the 2013 Com-munity Event of the Year.

Held last March at Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club, it was the fi rst event of the Mornington Peninsula branch of Disabled Surfers Association.

It was attended by 18 people with a range of disabilities who were support-ed by 180 volunteers including school children.

A strong supporter was last year’s mayor Cr Frank Martin who gave money from his ward fund as well as part-proceeds from the mayoral ball.

“Let’s Go Surfi ng” saw volunteers form a cordon to enable people with disabilities to surf, many for the fi rst time.”

The association’s peninsula branch secretary Ashley Gardner said winning the award “was great recognition of the hard work put in by the peninsula com-mittee, our volunteers and the support

we received from the community”.“We encourage everyone to come to

events on Saturday 9 February and 2 March 9am-1pm at Point Leo Beach. You don’t need to book just turn up on the day,” he said.

“The only requirement to attend is a good heart, a willingness to smile, hoot and cheer. You don’t need any surf skills or experience to help as we need volunteers in the water and on the beach.”

Mayor Cr Lynn Bowden said the awards recognise “people and events that made a signifi cant contribution to our local community”.

By Keith PlattAT fi rst glance it seems an unlikely link – the Hollywood celebrity and the Colombian asylum seeker living in Mornington.

But to Dizzy Carlyon, the issues and prejudices facing Harry Belafonte in the 1960s can rightly be compared to those confronting refugees in Australia.

Ms Carlyon, of Red Hill, has arranged a screening of the Belafonte fi lm Sing Your Song and a talk by Colombian asy-lum seeker Luz Restrepo to raise money for Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Step-ping Stones program.

The fi lm will be shown at 10.30am at the Mornington Cinema on Tuesday 26 February.

Stepping Stones offers women refugees opportunities, helping them develop new skills and increasing their participation in business and the com-munity.

“A patriot to the last and a champion for worldwide human rights, Harry Belafonte is one of the truly heroic cultural and political fi gures of the past 60 years,” Ms Carlyon said.

“However, even as a superstar, the life of a black man in 1960s America was far from easy and Belafonte was confronted with the same ‘Jim Crow’ laws and prejudices that every other black man, woman and child in America was facing.

“This movie had quite an impact on me. Belafonte was such a heart throb in my early years, but I had no idea of his incredible life journey and it seemed to me that there was a very real connection between some of the issues he con-fronted with some of the issues facing

refugees coming to Australia.”Ms Restrepo, a GP and communi-

cations consultant, sought refuge in Australia two years ago.

In common with many refugees, she faced “huge challenges, including a lack of English, a consequent lack of identity and self-esteem”, said Ms Carlyon, who describes herself as a doer with a passion to connect and help in the world around her.

Under the Stepping Stones program, Ms Restrepo has established a “Hand-made by Multicultural Women” group, which produces goods sold at markets and festivals.

“There are 25 women in the group, mainly from Africa, Asia and the Mid-dle East. They have limited English and are mostly disadvantaged,” Ms Restrepo said.

“Some of them cannot read or write or are ill. They come from traumatic back-grounds and, as refugees, fi nd it hard to get paid jobs.”

Ms Restrepo said selling their hand-crafts at markets helped the women get involved in the wider community.

She plans to open a shop to sell the goods made by the women, which would also serve as a base, helping them improve their English skills and undertake courses in business and fashion design.

“I have no plans to practice as a GP in Australia and will concentrate on work-ing in the social fi eld and marketing.”

To book for the Sing Your Song screening and a talk by Luz Restrepo, call Ms Carlyon on 5989 2118 or email [email protected]

By David HarrisonMORNINGTON Peninsula Shire ap-pears to be taking a new tack against people and groups whose correspon-dence it believes may contain defama-tory remarks.

At least three letters have been sent telling the recipients that if they wish the shire to respond to them, they should provide details in a statutory declaration or a sworn affi davit “so that perjury can be considered if what (the writer states) is untrue”.

One of the letters seen by The News states that “the shire is concerned with

the nature of your allegations” and continues:

“The shire reserves the right to re-publish the statutory declaration or affi davit to any individual who is com-plained about so that that individual can consider his or her legal options.”

It concludes: “Shire offi cers have legal rights and may choose to pursue those rights where they consider that the comments are defamatory or there are accusations of involvement in ille-gal actions.”

The letter is signed by Noel Buck, shire governance and corporate sup-

port manager. The letter does not detail who would cover the legal costs of any offi cer who might decide to sue, but it would almost certainly be the shire. Any such prosecution would be costly.

Also it does not state who would decide if a statement made by a com-plainant might be actionable. But if legal action was being contemplated, this would most likely have to be an opinion from a lawyer experienced in criminal law.

Perjury is the offence of “willfully telling an untruth” under circumstanc-es where truth is strictly required.

It is a serious criminal matter, heard in the County Court. Offenders can be jailed for up to 15 years. But prosecu-tions are rare because of diffi culties such as: Was it really perjury or just an honest mistake about what happened? Was it perjury on a crucial issue or was it perjury that had no real effect?

Section 314 (3) of the Victorian w 1958 states that a person must “know-ingly wilfully and corruptly” swear or affi rm the statement for a prosecution to proceed.

Prosecutors must prove that the

statement was made deliberately and intentionally and that it was false. De-fendants can argue they made an hon-est and reasonable mistake and there was lack of intent to lie.

Affi davits are sworn documents mostly used in legal proceedings.

Statutory declarations are used for many purposes including verifi cation of insurance claims, proof of age, ap-plications for sick leave or some types of benefi ts, and other situations where a formal statement is required that the information being provided is true and correct.

By Jo WinterbottomA LIFETIME of love for all creatures great and small has its own rewards for Jenny Bryant.

The matter of Australia Day medals is welcome, but chasing accolades has never been her style.

“I have just always loved animals,” Ms Bryant said yesterday, after receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours announced on Saturday.

The gong recognises her 32 years of work as a volunteer wildlife carer, opening her home and heart to injured wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, possums, echidnas and birds of all feathers. It is a full-time

job visiting vets, gathering and buy-ing food, feeding, medicating and cleaning up after the animals have been released back to the wild. She has never been paid and her costs are defrayed by donations.

“I can’t bear anything to suffer; I’ve always had a passion to help.”

Increasing urbanisation and traffi c in prime koala habitat such as exists in Somers and other Western Port towns has made Ms Bryant an expert on the animals as they become more frequent inpatients at her shelter.

Ms Bryant will celebrate her 59th birthday next month, but retirement does not beckon.

“I reckon I’ll keep doing this until I’ve got no breath in me,” she said.

A councillor with the former Shire of Hastings for 11 years, Mr Booth was also shire president and a volunteer lawyer with Peninsula Commu-nity Legal Service.

Mr Booth has been ordered by the Victorian Civic and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to undertake a course for legal practitioners on con-ducting trust accounts.

Mr Booth has said he will wait four years be-fore applying for a local practising certifi cate that authorises the receipt of trust money.

The ban on practising and the study order was made by VCAT on 13 November 2012 following an application by Legal Services Commissioner Michael McGarvie.

Mr Booth was also ordered to pay Mr McGar-vie $35,000 in quarterly payments of $8750 as from 4 January.

During the course of four disciplinary hearings between 4 October 2011 and 4 October 2012, the VCAT was told Mr Booth was facing 12 charges, including:

Professional misconduct over the administra-tion of a deceased estate dating back to Decem-ber 2007;

Professional misconduct for having practised as a legal practitioner without a current local practising certifi cate;

Unauthorised withdrawal and use of money from a client’s trust account;

Having a defi ciency in his trust account;Failing to notify an auditor of a defi ciency in

his trust account;Failing to keep a register of investments and

securities;

Please explain noticesPlease explain noticesMORE than 30,000 people on the Mornington Peninsula and in Frankston are being asked to explain why they did not vote at last October’s council elections.

People who do not respond to the “apparent failure-to-vote notice” may be fi ned $70.

Records kept by the Victorian Electoral Com-mission show that on the peninsula 16,568, or 31.48 per cent of 145,378 eligible voters, appear not to have voted.

In Frankston the number was 15,307, or 32.56 per cent, of a possible 97,191 voters.

Failing to keep trust account records “in a manner that enables them to be conveniently and properly audited”;

Unauthorised deposit of trust money; andFailing to respond and produce documents to a

trust account inspector. The VCAT fi nding stated that both the Legal

Services Commissioner and the tribunal “accept-ed … that Mr Booth was not acting dishonestly”.

However, the fi nding by tribunal member Gerard Butcher also stated that an attempt by Mr Booth to change an earlier plea of guilty to one of not guilty “has displayed a lack of remorse”.

“The irregularities in the conduct of his trust account by Mr Booth are suffi ciently serious to require the disposition to reassure the public that such conduct is unacceptable.”

Mr Booth, who has been practising since 1974, was reprimanded for professional misconduct in 2008.

He did not return calls from The News.

HOME-based businesses are popping up on the peninsula and the latest one is at Merricks Beach.

Qualifi ed dietitian Joey De Backer has set up a nutrition clinic called Liv ing Nutrition and her venture was launched last week.

Ms De Backer’s surname may be familiar to music fans as older brother Wally, aka Gotye, had the worldwide hit Somebody I Used To Know.

The business was opened to coincide with Healthy Weight Week 2013 from 20-27 January.

Ms De Backer said more than 70 guests “enjoyed a variety of delicious and healthy dishes featuring seasonal, local, organic produce”.

“Peninsula foodies, farmers and food producers spoke about healthy and sus tainable eating and I demonstrated some of my favourite recipes,” she said.

She said some of the most popu-lar dishes were chocolate avocado mousse, zucchini bread and a water-melon, feta and basil salad.

Guests won prizes donated by health

Corrie Williams, who won a free pass to Living Nutrition’s “Healthy Habits” program said she learnt a lot including about “tasty, nutritious and easy to prepare food”

Ms De Backer will be posting reci-pes from the launch food on her web-site www.livingnutrition.com.au

By Peter McCulloughON Sunday 20 January, Balnarring resident Beryl Sheedy celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends in Balnarring Hall.

Beryl was born in Warrnambool on 14 January 1913 to Harry and Ethel O’Millane. Her sister, four years older, lived until she was 101. Harry was a coach builder but when Beryl was still only a baby he “answered the call” and left for overseas. Although he returned, Harry was badly affected by the war and only lived for a further fi ve years.

Prior to Harry’s departure, the family had moved to Malvern where Beryl attended the local primary school and then Kildara. Her mother, Ethel, was a top-class dressmaker with many clients from high society.

After leaving school, Beryl helped her mother with her business, which operated from a shop in Glenferrie Rd, Malvern. She was not in the workroom where fi ve girls were employed as seamstresses.

In 1938 Beryl married Jim Sheedy who was employed in the post offi ce and later the Department of Supply. They lived in Sandringham and had two children, Barry and Loretta, before Jim left for New Guinea. Four more children were born after Jim’s return: Gail, Denis (who only lived for four months), Bernard and Annette.

Family holidays were spent at Kiama on the south coast of NSW and after Jim’s retirement they moved to the area. Jim and Beryl played a lot of bowls over the next 12 years. Earlier they had been keen bowlers in Hampton.

As they grew older, Jim and Beryl decided to move closer to family and chose Balnarring where Bernard was living. This was 21 years ago. Jim died in 1994 and Beryl still lives independently, enjoying various community activities. She has been a

keen bowler at Balnarring but is now a “social member”. Beryl has also been an active member of the CWA and Legacy, and enjoys weekly senior citizens’ functions. She also attends the Catholic Church in Hastings on a regular basis.

By Peter McCullough IN a stirring address, probably not unlike those given at three-quarter time to Rich-mond players in their golden era, AFL icon Tommy Hafey entertained the crowd on the Hastings foreshore on Australia Day.

Hafey’s advice to young people was to be the best that you can be and you will be a success: you don’t have to be as good or better than your brother or the kid next door – just be as good as you can possibly be. To illustrate his point, Hafey pointed out that seven of the last 33 Brownlow Medal winners had been rejected by their original clubs and seven of the 2012 Swans premiership team were “rejects”. Going to university was not essential to be a suc-cess; Lindsay Fox failed Year 9 twice.

The underlying theme of Hafey’s ad-dress was “be a doer – get involved” and he stressed the importance of setting goals or objectives. For example two of his aims are to read 24 books in a year and attend six concerts. He puts on a lunch every Christmas for “boys” who played with Richmond in his time: last year 130 at-tended. Younger people were encouraged to join a sporting club and enjoy the ca-maradarie that it provides; he lamented the fact that in the past 30 years, about 140 football/netball clubs had disbanded, vir-tually destroying country communities in the process.

Fitness is never far from Hafey’s mind and he urged his audience to make a start by seeing how many push-ups each person could do when they got out of bed tomor-row morning. His challenge was to double that number by the end of the week.

In concluding his address, Hafey re-turned to his theme of involvement by emphasising his credo: “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

TOMMY Hafey played 77 games for Richmond as a nuggety back pocket between 1953 and 1958.

After a season in the Ama-teurs he coached Shepparton to three fl ags.

Appointed coach of Rich-mond in 1966, the Tigers won premierships in 1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974.

He later coached Colling-wood, Geelong and the Sydney Swans for a combined total of 523 games.

Tommy was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996, named coach of Richmond’s team of the century in 1998, and given the AFL Coaches Association “Coaching

Legend” award in 2011. He is now 81.

Workout regimenTommy’s passion for fi tness

still exists: every morning he gets up at 5.20am and goes for an eight-kilometre run, followed by 250 push-ups and a swim in Port Phillip. When he gets home he does 700 crunches and sit-ups.

Children’s teeth need to be looked after gently and carefully.

Baby teeth or primary teeth help children to speak clearly and chew, they also pave the way for secondary teeth. By following a simple dental routine, you can help give your children healthy teeth and gums.

It is very important not to wait until your child experiences a toothache to visit the dentist. By having routine check-ups from an early age, it can help to eliminate the fear of the dental setting and establish a good dental routine they can follow throughout their lives.

Evaluate the way your child’s teeth fit together, “the bite”.

Show you and your child how to properly clean his or her teeth at home.

Answer your questions or concerns.

Present your child with a “showbag” of goodies

YES, you can have natural-looking dentures. Artifi cial teeth no longer have to look like artifi cial teeth. Dental prosthetist Joanne Grant says there is now a wide range of superior, natural-looking teeth.

“There are many different shapes and shades that are carefully selected to suit the complexion and shape of a person’s face,” she said.

Artistic fl air enables Joanne to create new smiles.

“Our aim is to provide a denture that will look as natural as possible, support facial muscles to prevent the appearance of premature ageing, and be functional and improve chewing ability.

“It is often thought that once a person gets dentures, they will last a lifetime. Although the dentures may feel comfortable (like a pair of old slippers!), the supporting tissues continue to change and if not checked regularly permanent damage may occur. It is important dentures and oral tissues are checked every two years, and new dentures fi tted every 6-8 years.”

Many people are anxious and embarrassed about getting new dentures. Joanne and her team (pictured) are very sensitive to

people’s needs and focus on making clients feel at ease.

Clients often comment on the friendliness and caring attitude of the staff and are always impressed with the customer service. Joanne sees her business not just that of supplying dentures, but as a ministry of caring for and helping people.

Westernport Denture Clinic was established by Joanne in 2006 and has become a family affair with son Jamie as dental technician, sister Jacinta as practice manager, sister Keryn as receptionist, sister Maree as bookkeeper, husband Max as data processor and brother Jamie as cleaner.

Joanne has worked in the

dental industry for more than 35 years, graduating from dental nurse to dental technician to dental prosthetist. She is highly regarded and has vast experience in the fi eld of dental prosthetics, having had a successful practice in Templestowe for 15 years before moving to Hastings, and also having lectured and worked as a clinical demonstrator in dental prosthetics at RMIT University.

Joanne, husband Max and daughter Tanya are residents of Hastings and are actively involved in the community.

For a complimentary consultation, call the clinic on 5979 4491 or visit 1/53 Victoria St, Hastings.

Surgery Now OpenHASTINGS Central Medical Centre, one of two practices in Hastings that had served the community for many years, closed last summer when doctors decided to move on.

It has been reopened by Dr Shamaila Saeed, who has relocated from Dandenong. She decided to reopen the surgery after realising the growing town needed more GPs, especially female GPs.

Dr Saeed with her husband and two children worked hard during the Christmas holidays to prepare the surgery before the start of the year. It opened on 7 January as planned.

Dr Saeed is a VR doctor with fellowship of Royal College of General Practitioners. She has a Diploma of Child Health and Diploma of Aviation Medicine. She has extensive experience in maternal and child health and is accredited with Southern Health for providing shared ante natal care for low-risk pregnancies. She is looking for ward to getting the same status with Peninsula Health.

Dr Saeed is also involved with the Royal College of General Practitioners as a college examiner and is involved with providing

Muhammad Khalid holds a Master of Business Administration degree from JCU in Townsville and has years of experience working in the role. He completed his Diploma of Practice Management from UNE, and is also the recipient of 2009 Barbra Meredith Memorial Award.

Tracey Simpson, one of the practice’s support staff, has years of experience supporting GPs at the medical centre.

Although it is hard to attract doctors to outer metropolitan and rural areas, the team at Hastings Central Medical Centre is confi dent that, with the support of the local community, it will soon be able to attract more doctors.

Hastings Central Medical Centre is accepting new patients and same-day appointments are available. The surgery is at 5/53 Victoria St, Hastings (adjacent to Coles car park) and is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 5979 1801.

By Keith PlattPLANNERS of the Bay Trail between Dromana and McCrae are stuck be-tween a rock and a hard place.

The trail that is supposed to provide safe passage for walkers and cyclists comes to an abrupt end at what is probably the most dangerous section of Point Nepean Rd.

The narrow strip of land available around the rocky outcrop of Antho-nys Nose means the road is not wide enough to accommodate a separate bike lane and the Bay Trail cannot be safely built next to the sea wall.

The trail offi cially ends at the Dromana foreshore camping area, al-though it continues as a track through to the boat launching ramp and car park at Anthonys Nose.

However, from the start of De-cember to the end of April, bikes are banned from the 47-site camping area, which is fi lled with caravans and vari-ous types of portable homes.

The linear camping area is squeezed between Point Nepean Rd and the sea wall. It is arguably the most inappro-priate place for campers, but the in-come it generates is vital to Dromana Foreshore Committee.

The portables, or sheds, are erected next to caravans on camping sites that, in the majority of cases, are booked by the same people for fi ve months, year to year.

Bookings are made each April and preference is given to “current caravan park users”.

Plans by the former Labor state gov-ernment ensure that at least 10 per cent

Trail a trial for its users and campersTrail a trial for its users and campers

of all camping sites were up for grabs each year to ensure “equity of access” were put on hold by the current Liberal government.

The long-term bookings provide campers with a prime location home away from home for which they pay $2700.

Many of the “campers” are members of the Peninsula Power Boat Club, which has been operating the adjacent boat ramp under licence from the fore-shore committee since 1957.

The committee, which relies on campers’ fees and 242 boat shed li-cences for its income, has suggested moving Point Nepean Rd seven metres inland into Latrobe Reserve to allow

the missing one-kilometre of Bay Trail to be built alongside the camping area.

Another plan available on the fore-shore committee’s website shows the Bay Trail going through the centre of the camping area, safely off the road.

Latrobe Reserve once housed the camping ground, but it was moved to the sea side of the road in the 1960s after a camper was killed while cross-ing the road.

Mornington Peninsula Shire’s 2012-13 budget allocated $80,000 to com-plete part of the Bay Trail between Safety Beach and Dromana, but made no mention of the missing kilometre at the camping ground or Anthonys Nose.

Ron Elleray, chairman of the fore-

shore committee’s caravan park com-mittee, said there were no plans to re-duce the number of sites or close the park.

“The Bay Trail will go kerbside [along Point Nepean Rd]. The caravan park can’t be closed because we rely on the income from the campers,” Mr Elleray said.

He said campers were not allowed to keep the public out of the reserve or block access to the beach “but they have to keep their private possessions safe”.

Mr Elleray said the campers “self-managed” the camping area, deciding among themselves who occupied each site.

“The area is so narrow that you can’t have vans coming and going all the time.”

Cars belonging to campers and their visitors were parked on the roadside with those of other beach users.

“It’s a known fact there are [safety] problems with cyclists and pedestri-ans, but there is no Bay Trail through the camping ground,” Mr Elleray said.

He said the foreshore committee did not want the trail going either through or alongside the camping ground until a decision had been made on how it would be built around Anthonys Nose.

“There is no point sending people through to the boat ramp area if the trail doesn’t go past Anthonys Nose.”

A brief history of Australia DayBy Stuart McCulloughALL public holidays are equal. Some, however, are more equal than others.

It’s true that you should never look a gift horse in the mouth. That’s not just because the thing has failed to brush its teeth (and, to be fair, it’s hard to attend to your oral hy-giene needs without opposable thumbs), but also because it can seem ungrateful. So it is with public holidays.

Deep down, we all know the Queen’s Birthday is a rort (Her Majesty’s birthday is in April, not June and is only occasion-ally on a Monday) but are too afraid to say anything in case someone takes it away.

The monarchy may well be an antiquated historical hic-cup that defi es modern notions of democracy, but that doesn’t mean the Queen’s Birthday holiday is anything less than untouchable.

Although all public holidays are con sidered vital, it’s true to say some invite more self-re-fl ection than others. You often hear people talk about the true meaning of Christmas. Rarely, if ever, does anyone bother to

contemplate the true mean-ing of New Year’s Day. While Christmas is about the power of giving, so far as I can tell, the sole purpose of 1 January is as some kind of global sick day.

It’s hard to talk about the true meaning of Australia Day. To do so can leave you vulnerable to charges of be ing unpatriotic or, worse still, “un-Australian”. It’s a funny thing that we often fi nd it easier to defi ne what is not Australian rather than what is. Other nations tend to defi ne themselves in the positive. So what is the meaning of our na-

tional day? Perhaps it’s in the way we celebrate it.

On its front page The Sun-day Territorian had a story under the headline “Australia Day biffo”. Celebrations of our national holiday turned sour when a fi ght broke out between people at a pie-eating contest and a bikini competition.

Frankly, it sounds like a scheduling problem. Everyone knows you should never, ever put a pie-eating contest on at the same time as a bikini com-petition. It puts a gentleman keen to attend both in a dread-

ful situation.Fans of both activities will

feel hopelessly compromised and such confl icts can easily be avoided by ensuring events of a disparate nature are timed to clash.

If, by way of example, the pie-eating contest was at the same time as a performance of Wagner’s Die Walküre, such problems could be avoided.

Or, to be safe, if Richard Wag-ner’s opera could be turned into a pie-eating contest, this might be even better. The thought of Ride of the Valkyries being performed through a mouthful of mince is compelling, to say the least.

To some, Australia Day rep-resents the landing of Captain Phillip and the First Fleet at Sydney Cove. That our na-tional day should be founded on simply turning up is kind of nice. Better than that, it’s worth remembering the rush to lay claim to our continent was driven by a desire to get in fi rst. Having spotted a couple of French ships lurking around the entrance to Botany Bay, Arthur Phillip gave orders to hightail it to Sydney Cove. So

began a tradition. To this day, people arrive at the local park in the dead of night to lay claim to an electric barbecue before anyone, including the nation of France, can beat them to it.

As early as 1808, 26 January was the day on which emanci-pated convicts chose to hon-our the land where they lived. Rather than by silent refl ection or the breaking of bread, it was said that the celebrations took the form of “drinking and mer-riment”. Back then, the main toast of the evening was to Ma-jor George Johnston, the fi rst offi cer to make it to shore. It’s worth not ing that old George did this riding on the back of a convict by the name of James Ruse. James, I feel, may well deserve a toast of his own.

It was also in 1808 that cel-ebrations, arguably, got slightly out of hand, re sulting in the armed overthrow of Governor William Bligh. Again, it was George Johnston leading the charge. History is silent, how-ever, as to whether he was, once again, mounted on his good steed James Ruse. The overthrow is now known as the Rum Rebellion. Perhaps a

little of the spirit of 1808 was responsible for Darwin’s pie-eating and bikini competition face-off. I’d like to think that, in years to come, it will be known as the Rum and Coke Rebellion.

Some people think Australia was discovered on Australia Day, but that’s not true. Plenty of people had been here before and the land had been inhabited for tens of thousands of years before either George Johnston or James Ruse got a boot down.

At the risk of being un-Aus-tralian, I think Americans have it right. They celebrate Thanks-giving. Those emancipated convicts understood it, too.

History is a complicated thing, but it’s worth being grateful. For me, I like to think about my grandparents who came here from Ireland. Whether you were born in this country or chose to come, the fact that you’re here is cause enough to give thanks.

On Saturday, I saw footage of people lining up to become citizens. It’s hard to think of a better way to spend a public holiday.www.stuartmccullough.com

NO other band came closer to embodying heavy metal than Black Sabbath. Over the years, the line-up may have changed but the music didn’t – loud, methodical, guitar-based heavy rock.

This month, Black Sabbath announced the ti-tle of its new album, 13, which will be released in June.

The original band – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler – recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles and was joined by drummer Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Ma-chine).

Produced by Rick Rubin (seven-time Gram-my winner), 13 marks the Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees’ return to Vertigo, the band’s original label; it’s the group’s fi rst studio album since 1978’s Never Say Die!

Before the album’s release, Black Sabbath will head to New Zealand, Australia and Japan

for live performances including at Rod Laver Arena on Monday 29 April and Wednesday 1 May.

LAST year was a huge one for The Wolfe Brothers. Hailing from Hobart, the group com-prises brothers Nick and Tom Wolfe and child-hood friends Casey Kostiuk and Brodie Rain-bird.

The band burst into the national spotlight af-ter fi nishing second on Channel Seven’s Aus-tralia’s Got Talent.

It’s On is the band’s debut album, released on 18 January. It has been mixed and co-produced by Nashville hit-maker Luke Wooten, who produced the latest CMA Award-nominated al-bum Home from US superstar Dierks Bentley as well as a number of tracks on The McCly-monts’ latest album.

LEE Kernaghan is back in town with his latest single Ute Me from the new album Beautiful Noise (ABC). The album has a giant, beat-ing country heart and an innovative approach to production unlike any-thing heard from Kernaghan before.

“The audience reaction has been amazing,” Kernaghan said.

“We recorded part of the song live at the Gympie Muster includ-ing the crowd singing along to Ute. Then we took the track to the Deni Ute Muster where we shot the music video on stage, in the arena and in the car park.”

Ute Me was a last-minute addition to the album. It was co-written with country hit-makers Colin Buchanan and Garth Porter.

“It was our last day of songwriting in Sydney and as I walked into the airport it hit me. Ute Me was an in-stantaneous kind of thing – the title and the music just hit me there and then and by the end of the afternoon the song was written,” Kernaghan said.

“We had a lot of fun in the studio with Ute Me and experimented with some grooves and sounds that you wouldn’t normally expect to hear in

our genre of music. It’s defi nitely going to test out the subs on a few speakers out there. Some people have even said the song should come with a classifi cation rating of ‘U’ for Ute Me!”

Kernaghan is touring Australia throughout 2013 with The Wolfe Brothers including at The Palms at Crown in Melbourne on 22 and 23 March. www.leekernaghan.com.au

Poppy’s Problem-solvingPerformance

By Gary Turner

THE phone rang and it was Gideon. He is married to the lovely Desiree, the light of his life, the mother of his children and a source of great frustration. She wanted a new car. What should he do?

It appears that their vehicle, a green Holden Camira, had fi nally died and they needed a new means of con-veyance. Gideon, not being a motoring enthusiast, did not know what sort of car to buy and was seeking ad-vice from Poppy.

The reason the Camira had died was it hit one of the massive potholes in Graydens Rd while Desiree was doing the school run. Some people have said the Camira never got out of the pothole, but that’s not true. It just didn’t go very far past it, that’s all.

I asked Gideon exactly what sort of vehicle he want-ed and to tell me their basic requirements. I asked him if he still intended living on the Mornington Peninsula.

Gideon’s requirements were simple. He wanted a vehicle that was automatic, could seat at least fi ve peo-ple, was not too expensive to run and one that could handle the broken road edges and massive potholes spread liberally around Mornington Peninsula Shire.

Colour was optional, as was make. However, De-siree wanted one of those black four-wheel drives that the all the “yummy mummies” drive, and she was “getting diffi cult” about this requirement, Gideon said.

What should he do?Poppy’s solutionI told Gideon the very fi rst thing he should do when

considering buying a car was to get under it and if he could not drag a full box of stubbies from side to side, and from front to back, without the box hitting the un-dercarriage, don’t buy it.

This was because the majority of potholes and road edge “drop offs” on the peninsula are the size of a stubby box. I explained that if the underneath “stuff” of the car hit a pothole, in most cases it would require a trip to the front end repairers and big dollars. Gideon understands “big dollars”.

Secondly I suggested he avoid the black four-wheel drive option as Desiree would want all the accesso-ries like Bluetooth, iPad, new designer clothes and a boyfriend.

Instead I suggested he look at twin-cab work utes. Good road clearance, seats fi ve, able to tow a boat if he would like to get one soon and it would slow down Desiree and her ambitions a bit and ensure she would be home to cook the fi sh when he came back from fi shing in his new boat instead of her parking outside wine bars and restaurants.

Gideon was happy. He even offered a compromise to Desiree by getting a black ute, and she seems happy that people now think Gideon is a tradie instead of a nerd Camira driver. Win-win situation.

THE summer break afforded much time to ponder human nature, never changing since Adam and Eve; never will.

I resorted to Robert Burton and his The Anatomy of Melancholy, in general terms: “If men would go vern their actions by discretion and provi-dence they would not declare them-selves fools as now they do. They swell in this life as if they were immor-tal. He that is now above, tomorrow is beneath, and not considering these matters fall into inconveniences and troubles, tumbling into lust, calami-ties and absurdities, rarely foreseeing dangers manifest. Some delight to de-stroy, one to build, another to spoil one country to enrich another and himself. They are like children; no judgement or counsel, and resemble beasts saving that beasts are better, as being content-ed with nature.” Press on.

***THE Public Health Information De-velopment Unit ranks Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula residents as at high risk of developing health issues relating to alcohol consumption.

“Some 70 per cent of bowel cancer cases are linked to modifi able diet and lifestyle factors,” says Julien Wiggins, CEO of Bowel Cancer Australia.

“Unfortunately, no one can prom-ise that if you do all the right things you won’t get bowel cancer. The rea-sons why some do and some don’t are very complex.” Clear as mud but,

as always, who decides “all the right things”?

No doubts with the AMA; every-thing is caused by smoking.

Apparently there are 66,500 smok-ers between Mordialloc and Portsea. Per haps apply themselves daily with Hugo Boss perfume and the cologne “Fragrance” to offset this disgusting habit? I’m moving to Mentone.

Physician, surgeon and philosopher Galen: “It is vain to speak of cures, or think of remedies, until such time as we have considered the causes.” More than 2000 years ago and he still knows better than the AMA.

***CONTINUING on the hard done by theme, the tax offi ce wants access to all telecommunications data collected by crime-fi ghting agencies; read state and federal police, ASIO, possibly STASI, the KGB and, of course, the big one, Centrelink. The big brothers, King Kongs. Soft-core totalitarian-ism? Not yet, but the more the state controls, the closer it creeps.

ASIO wants approval to hack into home computers to target suspected terrorists. Sounds reasonable, but it is staffed by human beings, and we all know about them.

***A WORD to Teddy: well done mate, banning solariums in two years. That’s showing them. Take no nonsense, eh Ted? Two more years to look after Frank ston, Carrum and Mordialloc,

mate. Don’t forget, they got you there. How is that promise travelling, Ted?

You remember, mate; the one to build a railway station next to Southland du-ring your fi rst term in offi ce, or was it the second? Tick, tick.

***WOOLWORTHS sees us coming. Avocados $1.98 to $3.48. Go with-out or shop Aldi. Come 1 February cost-of-living increases. They always go up? Pensions don’t, savings inter-est (if any) down, wages stay still, if you’re lucky. Cigarettes and alco-hol are certain ties; up, up and away? Who gets our extra dosh? Politicians in white castles don’t understand why we don’t love them; number 1 on my loveless list ahead of far right-wing journalists and obviously Hawthorn, Carlton and Essendon supporters.

Having said this, I don’t hate politi-cians. At least they put in, which is more than many cashed-up visitors to the peninsula this time of year.

***THE anatomy of gambling: Apparent-ly it’s evil. It’s not evil if the AFL, the racing industry, poker machine owners, sports clubs where approved, sports betting businesses and never forgetting our governments make plen ty of money from us. That’s busi-ness.

It is evil if we bet beyond our means, for our own good, of course. “The government remains committed”. Foot ballers, jockeys and other sports

people with direct contact cannot bet; it’s evil, ditto insider trading. Race-horse owners can bet.

If owning a beaten favourite, they must sometimes show evidence that they did bet on their horses; it’s ex-pected, not evil. If an owner’s heav-ily backed favourite is beaten and the owner did not bet, this would be sus-picious, possibly evil – work that one out.

Meanwhile the lovely people extrac-t ing our dollars must show evidence that they care about us. “Remember, always gamble responsibly.”

If we strike it lucky and win more than $999, we get a cheque so they can keep a tab on our evil ways. We could be laundering our Centrelink trillions? A tangled web indeed.

***IT could be old age, the cranky bar-rier where a form of mild panic about insignifi cant things sets in, but I could be right. A superstorm like America’s Sandy coming to Port Phillip? The past six months have produced extra-ordinary weather patterns.

So, from my Boy Scout days, al -low ing for the fact I failed the Tender-foot test, “be prepared”.

Make my list now just in case, one never knows. Load up the car for the trek to Arthurs Seat. Salt, baked beans, biscuits, dips, glasses, book, PK chew-ing gum, iPhone, extra clothes, Sera-pax, Panadol, Valium, teeth, cre dit card, $50, ciggies, stubbies, car fridge,

insurance details and photos. Viagra? Nah. Done.

***WHEN I was almost a teenager, one of my favourites was Auntie Edna, a free-spirited female who was a sup-porter, never a critic.

They’re the ones you look back on with affection when you get older. Auntie was old, but I loved her. She died at 40 when I was 26 so looking back I thought lovely Edna was old when she was 26, which gives some perspective on how old is old de pend-ing on who’s judging.

I had a party when I reached 42, con-vinced I had run my race (some said I had). I declared at 39 and stayed there till 44. Lately I’ve been 69. It has a ring to it; playing possum with evolu-tion, unsuccessfully.

Can’t play with my teeth; down to fi ve. Still, makes you think how chil-dren see us, bless the little monsters. I learnt a lesson from Auntie Edna. A supporter, never a critic. Something to keep in mind.

PROVINCIALBy IT GullyMORNINGTON is in outright second on the MPCA Provincial ladder after a resounding victory against Mooroo-duc on Saturday.

While the Ducs lost the match, they remain just eight points outside the top four.

There are now six teams vying for fourth place.

Sorrento (104 points), Mornington (78) and Baxter (72) appear to have the top three spots sewn up.

However, there is incredible interest in the rest of the competition for the fi -nal position.

Peninsula Old Boys is on 50 points, Long Island, Crib Point and the Ducs are on 48 and a resurgent Rye is now just 14 points (42) outside the top four.

Mt Eliza deserves the spot. Give the team the points controversially taken

away for breaching the player points system and it would be sitting pretty in the top bracket.

Mornington looks to have the wea-pons to go deep into the fi nals.

After setting the opposition 295 for victory following Matt Foon’s century and Ben Clements continued his domi-nance with 96, the Doggies were un-likely to lose.

Even with Bobby Wilson, the Ducs weren’t going to chase down the total considering the Dogs’ bowling attack.

Foon matched his batting perfor-mance with the ball, claiming 3/38, and teenager Jack Heseltine snared 3/21 in his fi rst senior match of the season. He then made an unbeaten 38 opening the innings in the Dogs’ second dig

The Ducs were rolled for 160, a long way short of Mornington’s total.

Rye continues to be a mover, beating the more fancied Baxter by 39 runs.

Rye made 229 on day one of the

match and had Baxter one down at stumps.

The day belonged to Rye’s Rhys Wynne, who snared his best bowling fi gures for the season with 6/66. He has 23 wickets for the season and also has been handy with the bat.

Daniel Warwick top-scored for Bax-ter with 65, while Ben Matters (24), Dale Irving (24) and Travis Sawers (23) all got starts but didn’t go on with it.

Adrian Mack (16) tried to guide his side home with the assistance of Sam Wolsgrove (3), but they fell short.

Peninsula Old Boys leapfrogged Crib Point on the ladder after an easy victory.

Defending 223, the Old Boys rolled the Magpies for just 114. Warren Her-rington top-scored for the Pies with 36 and Henry Dolphin scored 21.

Jon Forrest bowled 15 overs and was the pick of the trundlers with 4/19. Zac

Fillipone opened with the new ball and claimed 4/28 from 20 overs in a fi rst class display.

The Old Boys sent the Magpies back in to try for an outright victory and had them reeling at 6/74 in 26 overs.

Sorrento completed the expected and defeated Ballam Park outright. Top position on the ladder is now Sor-rento’s. After declaring at 8/257, the Sharks rolled the Knights twice – for 144 and 67.

A J King picked up 5/30 from 17 overs in the fi rst innings and 7/20 in the second, including a hatrick – 12/50 from 27.2 overs is not a bad day’s work.

Ryan Seaton Clarke top-scored for the Knights in the second innings with 27. Matty Roach with 17 was the only other bat to reach double fi gures. An-thony Joel scored 60 in the Knights’ fi rst innings and Adam Callahan 31.

Mt Eliza did it as easy as you like

against Heatherhill. After scoring 271 on day one of the match, the Mounties rolled the Hills for 161.

Justin Savio snared 3/23 from 10.5 overs for the Mounties and Lyle House chipped in with 3/55 and Justin Grant snared 2/39.

Christian Heath was the top-scorer for the Hills with 53 opening the in-nings, while skipper Matty Meagher chimed in with 49.

Long Island completed the expected and got the job done against Mt Mar-tha.

After scoring 264, the Islanders’ bowlers got to work and the Reds were dismissed for just 108. At one stage, Mt Martha was 8/53.

Aidan Pateman scored most runs for the Reds with 33.

Paul Hartle claimed 5/25 from 19 overs and Andrew Tweddle picked up 3/31, also from 19.

Six teams vying for final spot on ladderSix teams vying for final spot on ladder

DISTRICTBy IT GullyTHERE is a massive log jam of teams vying for a spot in the MPCA District fi nals following round eight results.

Langwarrin sits a game and a half clear on top of the ladder and Carrum is second on 60 points.

Then there is Delacombe Park and Baden Powell on 60, Boneo and Main Ridge on 54, and Somerville and Pines on 48. There is just one game and percen tage separating third and eighth.

Hastings is back in the hunt on 42 points after pulling off a fantastic vic-tory over Boneo.

Pines caused the upset of the round after knocking over the inconsistent Delacombe Park.

The Parkers were the fi rst team to beat Langwarrin in the last round, but struggled to score just over 100 against the Piners.

The Piners lasted 57 overs in their fi rst innings, scoring 134, before dis-mis sing Delacombe for 118 in 49 overs.

Nick Wilcox was sensational for the Piners with 6/52 from 23 overs, while Ricky Ramsdale snared 2/6 from fi ve overs.

Evan Campbell top-scored for the Parkers with 25, batting at 10.

Baden Powell tried to pick up an outright win against Frankston YCW but fell short.

The Braves rolled the Stonecats for 103 in 67 overs on day one before scoring a quickfi re 7/106 in 44 overs.

Skipper Rhys Elmi top-scored for

the Braves with 46, and Craig Burch was the star with the ball for the Ston-ecats with fi ve wickets.

Hastings bowlers were up for the challenge on Saturday, successfully de fending the Blues’ day one score of 174.

All six Hastings bowlers were among the wickets, openers Scott Phillips and Isuru Dias getting a cou-ple each.

The only Boneo batsmen to offer any resistance were Tony Horvat with 51 and Cameron Williams with 33, the only Boneo bats to score double fi g-ures.

Boneo was bowled out for 113 in the 48th over.

Langwarrin won the battle for top spot against Carrum, but it came after a bit of a scare. The ladder leader was

cruising at 3/119 after Simon McEvoy (26), skipper Mark Cooper (66) and David Ross (30) got the side away to a fl yer.

But the Kangas lost three players in the middle order for ducks and Andy Johnson for six. All of a sudden Car-rum had Langwarrin in trouble at 6/124.

However, Langwarrin was chasing just 147, and Cooper and Wells bridg-ed the gap. When Cooper went, the Kangas were four runs ahead.

Langwarrin fi nished at 9/226, Dwayne Doig not out 27 and number 11 Alex Coad not out 29.

Daniel Polson snared three wickets for the Lions, and Jackson Fry picked up two.

Seaford and Main Ridge scored more than 700 runs in 150 overs, but

the Ridge got over the line and kept its fi nals hopes alive. For Seaford, it’s season over.

Chasing 363 for victory, Seaford was gallant, scoring 350 before the last wicket fell.

Chris Cleef scored 127, Nick Simpen dorfer 89 and Damien Law-rence an unbeaten 73 for the yellow and black.

Somerville has remained in touch after scoring a great win over Flinders.

It looked like 194 would be enough for the Eagles and it proved to be the case when Flinders was bowled out for 169.

Shane Beggs top-scored with 65, Andrew Power was next best with 35 and Tim Clarke hit 22 for the Sharks.

SUB-DISTRICTBy IT GullyTYABB has joined Rosebud at the top of the MPCA Sub-district ladder after pulling off a dramatic four-run win over Skye on Satur-day.

After setting the visitors 293 for victory, the Yabbies had to work hard and victory came in the third-last over.

Skye’s tail was superb and almost got it over the line.

At 3/26, the Yabbies were well on top be-fore Paul Fillipone and Kane Perry come to-gether at the crease and began to rebuild the innings.

Fillipone fi nished with 89, Perry scored 49 and Pat Beckham hit 43 in the middle order to take the score to 5/185. While Tyabb main-tained its strangle hold on the game, it didn’t count on the Skye lower order to add more than 70 runs and get within strik ing range.

Ben Milano, who batted at 10, fi ni shed with 28 and Pat Clinch scored 12, helping Skye get within four runs of victory.

Yabbies’ skipper Luke Rus worked tire-lessly and celebrated his fi fth wick et on the

second-last ball of his 22nd over. The 10th wicket yielded 32 runs, getting the score to 288.

Rienzie Wijeratne capped off a fantas tic game with 43 runs and 3/64.

Balnarring is half a game off top spot af-ter beating ladder-leaders Rose bud by eight runs.

Jacob Cook was sensational for the win-ners, snaring a career-best 7/71 off 27 overs.

After scoring a competitive 215 last week, Balnarring’s bowlers needed to be at their best to get the side over the line. Cook de-livered.

The Buds lost their fi rst wicket with the score on 41, but lost the next two wickets in-side 20 runs.

When Darren Kerr was dismissed for 37 and Leigh Parslow 34, both by Cook, the Buds looked to be in strife. They never re-covered, although Scott Millar dug deep bat-ting at 11 and scor ed 18.

The Buds were bowled out in the 63rd over.Red Hill moved into the top four with an

effortless victory over Seaford Tigers. It was a battle for fourth and the Tigers

were not competitive.

The Hillmen made just 146 on day one but the bowlers came to the fore and rolled the Tigers for just 93.

Tom Burgdorf with 29 was one of only two batsmen to score double fi gures.

Glenn Collett bowled 13 overs and fi nished with 4/20 for the Hillmen and Simon Dart took 3/21. Luke Toy snagged 2/9 from his six overs.

Pearcedale is just percentage out of the top four after easily accounting for Tootgarook.

While the fi rst innings wasn’t the best cricket you’ll see, where the Panthers made 130 and the Tooters 84, Pearcedale per-formed well with the bat in its second dig, scoring 4/193.

Carrum Downs celebrated a rare vic tory, beating French Island by 30 runs.

After dismissing the Islanders for 101, the Cougars replied with 139 be fore declaring with two wickets in hand.

Carrum Downs had the chance of an out-right and reduced French Island to 5/88, but the Islanders played with a dead bat for the entire 39 overs.

ON THE LINEBy Paul “Tracker” PingiaroTHE Australia Day long weekend oc-curred around the full moon and most fi sh species didn’t come out to play.

While the usual gummy sharks played on the full moon, snapper, whiting and even fl atties were very quiet.

Anglers fi shing for squid did okay and quite a number of cuttlefi sh were caught as were a few arrow squid in the southern peninsula and Bass Strait.

Offshore there are a few sharks and kingfi sh for those willing to put in the effort. With the full moon moving, we will again see fi shing improve, but this may not occur till we get over the cold snap approaching this weekend. Rest assured the fi shing will hot up again as we get in to the stable weather patterns of late February, March and April.

Boating tipNothing ruins a day on our bays like

someone hogging the boat ramp. When returning to the ramp, remem-

ber people are coming and going all the time.

Approach the jetty and ramp on a disengaged side, away from the ac-tion. Tie up and get the car and trailer.

When it’s your turn and the ramp is clear, back in, set the parking brake and, if necessary, block the front wheels.

Leave the gear, bait and fi sh in the boat till you have retrieved it. Winch it onto the trailer, put on the safety chain,

pick up the blocks, release the parking brake, and pull out steadily.

Now that you are away from the ramp, remove all gear, set the motor for towing, remove drain plugs, strap the boat to the trailer, hook up lights, test them and you are on your way.

A bit of ramp courtesy will make for an enjoyable day on the water for all users.

Boating newsThe Yaringa Boat Harbour draft

public environment report is fi nally on display. Boaties and fi shos might like

to unite and get this one over the line. The redevelopment will create jobs and help provide economic stimulus for the Hastings region.

This is important to the region as BlueScope is about to retrench 170 workers and many business are strug-

gling due to the lack of investment in the area.

I have operated in the region for a few years and have noticed as a reg-ular user of the marina and access channel that boats have no impact on wading birds foraging on the mudfl ats adjacent to the channel or congregat-ing on roosting sites in the area.

As a commercial operator in the area I have fi rst-hand experience of the ma-rina management’s constant reminders and information regarding the under-standing and protection of the envi-ronmental values of Western Port.

Yaringa has some great fi shing and sailing options, and is under an hour from Melbourne, making it a perfect boating destination.
