January 27, 2019 Third Sunday In Ordinary Time

One of my favorite passages in all of scripture is the one spoken by Jesus in synagogue in today’s gospel text from Luke which Jesus took from the prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” What a beautiful reminder for all of us in these dark days of winter. We have a mission by our baptism – we are commissioned to bring glad tidings to the poor. Who are the poor? Possibly those who need a little time during our day? The downtrodden? A person with an illness who needs a gentle reminder that they are loved? Who is it, in your life, where you can bring gladness and joy? As announced, I am packing the car and heading back to seminary! I will actually be returning to my alma mater at Conception Seminary College in northwest Missouri. I will be taking the month to write my thesis for the licentiate degree in Canon Law. Having this time will afford me the opportunity to be single-minded in my studies as I approach the end of the degree program. This summer, I will return to Washington DC for my final summer. I will be taking classes and then, by the grace of God, I will sit for comprehensives with 3 unknown professors who can quiz me on my knowledge in Canon Law. And, at the end of the hour, I will hear the immortal words which ever student hopes to hear: “You passed!” Please pray for me and know you're in my daily prayers. Fr. Jim Heitoff will be returning for the month of February and June & July. I appreciate his willingness to be here in my absence. I know I leave you in very capable and pastoral hands. God bless you all. I received this email recently and thought I would share it’s content with you: “We were selected to receive a Christmas basket and it could not have been more wonderful! In the Gospel today, Jesus makes the connection in the Torah reading from Isaiah prophesying what the Messiah would do and that he, Jesus, is the one described in this Scripture passage. Isaiah had written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. (Isaiah 61:1-2)

When Jesus reads this passage from Isaiah, he does so in a way that the Jews, hearing the words, realize a different meaning than they ever con-sidered. The synagogue anxiously awaits the explanation that would coincided with the dramatic sensations felt during Jesus’ reading. Most unexpectedly, Jesus confirms that he is the one referred to in the reading saying, “These words have been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21)

The Jewish people were expectant for the coming Messiah. The long-awaited promise from God was interpreted that the Messiah would restore Israel to independence free from Rome and that other nations would be respective because Israel was God’s chosen ones, his favored children. The Jews imagined that the Messiah would return Israel to a land of milk and honey.

The quote from Isaiah speaks of the redemption for the poor, those imprisoned, the blind and those without hope. The Messiah must be indeed great in his promise to bring relief to all those who are in physical need. However, sometimes one reads too literally this passage and expects Jesus to elimi-nate all of one’s earthly discomforts, while, in reality, Isaiah’s prophecy was us to prepare for the promise of salvation.

Although many hoped the Messiah had come, Jesus needed to prove the words “These words have been fulfilled in your hearing,” which he did through miracles. Then, as now, not everyone believed him even after observing a miracle. Many disbelieved because Jesus did not come with the message that they wanted, which was to create heaven here on earth. Others, who listened to the words, saw the miracles and believed, recognized that any effort achieving perfection will not be found here but only in heaven. The miracle of healing that Jesus used and continues to use demonstrates that he is still with-in in our midst proving that he loves never dissipates.

As we know Jesus did not come necessarily to bring about a physical restoration. Although in his love for us he at times brings healing to those with afflictions, he primarily comes to save our souls that suffer from the ravages of sin. Jesus comes to bring good news to the poor in spirit. He comes to free those imprisoned by sin. He comes to reveal the light of salvation to those who walk in the devil’s darkness. He comes to dispel the hopelessness of those who see no future because of their deplorable condition.

Jesus’ works, because we are Christians, become our works of mercy. No person is capable of meeting every need. While we individually cannot be all things to all people, we still have a role to take up to assist in the salvation of the world. The second reading this week reminds us, different parts of the body have different essential responsibilities collectively enables the whole body to function optimally. The eye does not have the capabilities of the ear. The hand cannot support the weight of the body like the foot. In the same one person cannot be the whole Church. We, as the body of Christ, have specific roles that accomplish the Church’s role in salvation. Once we truly believe and live the life as the body of Christ, we will then be able to fully comprehend the words Jesus gave us.

“Act on this word. If all you do is listen, you are deceiving your selves. There is on the other hand, the man who peers into freedom’s ideal law and abides by it. He is no forgetful listener, but one who carries out the law in practice. Blest will this man be in whatever he does.” (James 1:22, 25)

Simple acts of kindness Jesus was clear that he wants us to be kind to everyone. In the famous parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus told of a man who was robbed and left for dead. The man was passed by a priest and a Levite before a Samaritan man helped him. The Samaritan – supposedly an enemy – demonstrated true kindness. Jesus told us to do the same. (Luke 11:34) Teach children to value people first. When Ashley tripped playing basketball and missed the game-winning basket, her teammates gave her dirty looks and passed as she lay on the floor holding her ankle. It was a member of the other team who was kind enough to help her up. Encourage acts of kindness. Gerry noticed that the new boy at school seemed sad. It turned out that Sammy’s dad lost his job and money was tight. Gerry began packing an extra sandwich in his lunch for Sammy, sat next to him in the cafeteria, and played together at recess. Both boys made a good friend.

Sacraments are “efficacious signs, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church” to give grace (Catechism of the Catholic Church). Grace is a share in God’s divine life.

AED Unit As part of our move to increase the safety standards within our building, St. Agnes School has received an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) courtesy of Dr. Lisa Scheppers and Michael Wharton. This portable unit detects life-threatening cardiac events and can be used to restore heat rhythms while 911 is called. All staff will be trained by Mr. Wharton on the use of this machine in case of an emergency situation within our building. Our thanks to the Wharton’s for this generous donation.

What’s Happening at St. Agnes School………...

Safety Training St. Agnes School is adopting the Standard Response Protocol for safety training within our school. Chuck Elley, worked with teachers during their January in-service, training them on procedures for Lockout, Lockdown and sheltering for safety hazards. On Monday, January 21, all students and staff took part in a safety day in which students learned the new verbiage for the various drills, discussed safe zones

within the building, and drilled on the different situations from various places in the building. Thank you to Officer Chris Calvert for his assistance during our drills A parent meeting on our safety plan will be held in the future.

Celebrating Reading St. Agnes students who met their 1st semester reading goals enjoyed celebrating their success at the whole school reading party held on Friday, January 18th. Students participated in activities associated with this year’s sports theme. Activities included: sports bingo, a basketball relay, a “snowball fight”, sports games on the Wii, a sports art project and decorating a sports cookie. It was an afternoon of fun and excitement for all. Great job to all our amazing readers!!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Kindergarten – 2nd grade students attended the Midwest Theater performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle favorites on Tuesday, January 22nd. Three beloved stories by Eric Carle, award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, were retold

on stage through fanciful puppets. The students enjoyed the stories of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and the Mixed-Up Chameleon performed through theater.

Fourth Grade Class By Kristie Becker

Fourth grade is already working hard in the new quarter. We recently finished up our science unit on matter. Students enjoyed doing a fun activity with the pan balances to find the mass of objects around our classroom. In social studies, we have switched over to geography of the United States to prepare for the big unit we do on states and capitals. In math, the students are excited to be learning long division and have been working hard at it. We also had our first “Word Problem Wednesday”. Students worked in pairs to solve word problems using higher level thinking. This was a good learning experience that we will carry out each Wednesday. All the reading groups started new novels and they are currently reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins, A Cricket in Time Square, and The Chocolate Touch, in their respective groups. We are working hard to understand story elements and better our reading comprehension.

Fourth grade also enjoyed pairing up to do snowmen activities with our Kindergarten reading buddies. We created figurative language snow globes and a painting for the hallway. We have set word goals for ourselves to follow into the new year!

Happy New Year! We hope the New Year brings you great joy, health and happiness. We pray that your Christmas time with loved ones and friends was everything you prayed for and more. A big "thank you" to our parents for spreading Christmas joy last month. The giving spirit was alive and flourishing throughout the entire month. We are so fortunate to have such a great group of families at St. Agnes. This is a special time of the school year because the children have learned all the basics and are beginning to put them together. Most of the children, who were just writing their name in September, are now writing sentences, reading words, and learning to be independent and great problem solvers! It is quite amazing to see the growth in my students! We are on to a new year with limitless possibilities in learning!
