A Message from Monsignor Hennessy Dear Parishioners, This past week our nation celebrated the peaceful transfer of power as President Biden became the 46th President of the United States of America. As with all inaugurations, it is a moment of reflection for our nation and an opportunity to recommit our-selves to unity of purpose and, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, to the inalienable rights of “… life, liberty and the pur-suit of happiness for all.” As we pray for our new President and Vice President, that they be true servants of our nation and that they promote the dig-nity of each person, especially the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn, may we make these words of Archbishop John Carroll our own. He composed this prayer for the inauguration of our first President, George Washington. We pray, O almighty and eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of your name. We pray Thee, who alone are good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, the Pope, the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own Bishop, all other bishops, prelates and pas-tors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise among us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct your people into the ways of salvation. We pray O God of might, wisdom and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment de-creed, assist with your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his administration may be con-ducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of your divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty. We pray for the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are ap-pointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by your powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respec-tive stations with honesty and ability. We recommend likewise, to your unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of your most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal. Finally, we pray to you, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of your servants departed, who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech you, a place of refreshment, light and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

May God bless you and may he bless our nation with health and peace! Sincerely in Christ, Monsignor Hennessy

READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK Reading I: Jonah 3: 1-5, 10 The prophet, as God‘s spokesman, brings about a miraculous turnaround by the people of Nineveh. Prior to that, the city was known only for its sinful cruelty and wickedness.

Reading II: I Corinthians 7: 29-31 St. Paul believed in an imminent end of the world, so he recommends detachment from earthly ways. It would be ridiculous to maintain one‘s ―status quo‖ in such cir-cumstances.

The Gospel: Mark 1: 14-20 Jesus calls His first disciples. He was so compelling that they were immediate with their responses. Jesus describes their new life‘s work as their becoming ―fishers of men.‖

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

(St. Alphonsus Ligouri) My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most

Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I de-sire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritu-

ally into my heart. Iembrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

A New Year Suggestion: Join BSG! What is BSG? It is the Tuesday Morning Bible Study Group. Why join BSG: because it is an opportunity to learn the scriptures without leaving the warmth of your own home. Why now? Two reasons: it is the beginning of a new year and BSG is beginning a new Catholic Bible Study program, First Corinthians: ―The Church and the Christian Community.‖ First Corinthians is an eleven session Ascension Press program that tells of the conflicts of the early Christians that in many ways resemble our struggles today. The message of St. Paul to the early Christian community in Corinth that guides and encourages them amid their problems with divisions, immorality and persecution is a much-needed message for our own times. Our sessions are in-person at 6:30 AM on Tuesday mornings (worth the sacrifice) in the Narthex and remotely on Zoom. For information call Dave White (215-601-3424) ([email protected]).
