    A Message From Fr. Mateus

    Dear brothers and sisters,

We are accompanying Jesus at the beginning of his public preaching. For this reason, this Sunday’s Gospel presents us with the first four apostolic voca ons: Simon and Andrew, James and John, these are the first disciples that preached Christ’s word to people and witnessed it un l martyrdom. From what the other evangelists tell us, we know that these

four men were all followers of John the Bap st. Now, as he was imprisoned due to Herod's wicked-ness, they returned, disconsolate and with no one to follow, to their ordinary occupa ons, to the life they led before they were touched by the voice of the Precursor. That’s how we find them at the beginning of today's reading: they cast their nets into the sea, engaged in fishing in their boats and entertained with the rou ne tasks they had before they met the Bap st.

We will see them in a similar situa on shortly a er the Lord's death. Christ is dead, hope is lost, the disciples return to the old life of fishermen. The Bap st passes, they return to fishing; Jesus passes, they return to fishing. Hence it appears that the appeal that Christ addresses today to them contains, in fact, a double call: first, one voca onal and apostolic; second, one of conversion, renun-cia on and detachment. With the voca onal call Jesus wants to make them disciples and preachers of the Good News. With the call of conversion Jesus wants them, in the exercise of this apostolate, to win the world, as He won. By promising that he would make them "fishers of men", the Lord reveals the sacrifices that will require them to preach the Word and the renuncia on on the part of those who welcome it into their hearts.

In fact, just as the fisherman, taking the fish out of the water, ends up killing them, so the apostle, fishing men from the vani es of the world, makes them die to sin and be reborn to a new life in Christ Jesus. The apostle suffers from the harshness of fishing; men, with the turbulence of the world. The apostles fishes to give new life to men; men then die for the old life of the old Adam. Therefore, something must die in those who are converted to Christ. It is the Lord Himself who says it: "If anyone wants to follow me, renounce himself, take up his cross each day, and follow me”. Therefore, let our apostolate be similar to the service of a midwife, by which we help those who are s ll dead in the "life" of the world to be reborn to the life in the Spirit. May the Lord, by conver ng our proud heart, help us to fill Peter's net with a mul tude of souls! God bless you all!

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Many dioceses here in the United States face significant challenges due to priest shortages, lack of funds, remote geography, or impoverished parishes. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal, which began in 1924, suppor ts these dioceses in order to serve the many needs of their parishioners. Home mission dioceses are those dioceses in the United States, its territories, and former territo-ries that cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. These services include Mass and the other sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters, and lay people. Right now, over 40% of dioceses are considered home mission. Thanks to your gener-osity, these dioceses were assisted with nearly $9 million in assistance in 2020.

From the post-industrial cities of Ohio and Michigan in the east to the prairies of Nebraska and Kansas in the west, the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Eparchy of Parma encompasses a vast and diverse territory of 12 Midwestern states. Founded in 1969 to serve the needs of Slavic immigrant families, the eparchy currently ministers to more than 5,200 Catholics in 28 parishes and 6 missions. One of the most effective ways the eparchy fosters unity among this widely dispersed flock is through its Horizons newspaper, published every three weeks, which reaches readers not only in the eparchy’s 12 states but beyond, in Canada and even Europe.

Your generosity to the Catholic Home Missions Appeal has helped the eparchy improve its outreach through the development of a smartphone/tablet app that includes Horizons news stories and daily liturgical readings. Also, the eparchy established Horizons Press in 2017 to publish prayer resources for underserved Byzantine Catholics. These resources allow the faithful not only to grow in their own personal holiness but also to share their faith more easily with their neigh-bors.

I encourage you to be generous on the weekend of January 31 to help strengthen the Church at home. Your support will truly make a difference. For more infor-mation, please visit www.usccb.org/home-missions.

With every prayerful best wish, I remain

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
