A Message from the Administrative Team

A Message from School Council

Happy 2020 Buttonville families!!! Hope you all had a relaxing and wonderful holiday break. Our lunch-

es will resume again every Tuesday with Astoria Greek Jan. 7, Mr. Sub Jan. 14, Mother’s Deli Pasta Jan.

21 and Mine Sushi Jan. 28. Don’t forget that if buses are cancelled due to weather, these lunches as

well as pizza lunches and popcorn/cookie sales will be rescheduled for another date. We also wanted

to thank you all for purchasing tickets for the comfy couch and gingerbread raffles last month. As a

result of your generosity, we raised a little over $500 for the school! In addition, don’t forget to pur-

chase your Buttonville buffs and water bottles to show your school spirit. Our next council meeting is

Wednesday January 22, 2020. All are welcome.

Sincerely,

Neely Noticewala & Imma Petrou

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday break filled

with love and laughter with family and friends.

Please help remind your child to dress appropriately for the winter weather, so they can enjoy their

time outside during recess and lunch breaks. It is advisable for children to bring extra socks and pants

if a change is required due to the wet and cold weather of winter months. To avoid clothing being

lost, please label all articles of clothing. We want to encourage physical activity and ensure our stu-

dents enjoy winter activities.

Labour Action Update: As you may know from previous communications, changes to work-to-rule

strike sanctions by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) were announced. These

sanctions are a result of the bargaining process at the provincial level, and Board employees are re-

quired to follow the direction of their provincial federations. At this time, all field trips and extra-

curricular activities have been suspended.

Please remember that there are PA days on January 17th and January 31st, 2020. As we begin our New

Year, we will continue to focus on student achievement and well being. Students will continue to have

multiple opportunities to show their thinking and be provided with descriptive feedback before en-

gaging in summative tasks. All this data will be used by teachers in order to provide you with a clear

picture of your child’s achievement to date. Our students will work with their teachers to review goals

and set new goals as they move into second term. It is important that we all work together to sup-

port these goals. Report cards will be sent home on February 13th. We look forward to working

together!

If parents/guardians or students receive a letter from York Region Public Health requesting immunization information, here’s what to do:

Update York Region Public Health on your child’s immunization status in one of the following ways:

Online at https://eimmunization.york.ca

Fax documents to 905-895-6066 or 1-866-258-2026

Mail immunization information to Immunization Services, Box 147, Newmarket, ON L3Y 6Z1

Call York Region Public Health at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 73456

Thank you to our School Council for organizing the Hot Chocolate Day for Buttonville students!

As we move further into the winter season, we see an increased amount of illness with students. If students

are sick it is important for them to get rest. If your children are sick, do not sent them to school. If they are

at school they will be expected to go outside for recess. Also we do not want illnesses to spread to other

students! We appreciate your co-operation with this.

School Bus Cancellation Notice

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme

temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate

care/transportation arrangements.

Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus

companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature,

road conditions and weather forecast.

Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses,

vans and taxis will not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all municipalities

in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students

attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal

boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and rescheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their

children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the

morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by

parents will require the same transportation home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00

a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:

Ms. Pabla’s Class Trip to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Mrs. Pabla’s class participated in a series of engaging activities focused on Ontario's Parliament and

government that relate to key concepts of their curriculum. Students participated in a mock debate about a

fictional bill (such as “The School Homework Act”) in the mini Legislative Chamber, assumed the roles of the

Parliamentary Players and MPPs. This program consisted of three segments: a visit to the Legislative

Chamber, a tour of the historic Legislative Building, and a participatory group activity.

All students are expected to go out for every recess unless the principal or vice-principal decides that weather conditions are such that it would be detrimental for students to be outdoors. Students are to come to school dressed for outdoor play and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 minutes after lunch. Weather, including temperature, wind chill, sun/cloud conditions and wind velocity, is continuously monitored and in extreme weather conditions, recess breaks may be shortened or students kept indoors. During the cold months of winter, students should be dressed appropriately for weather conditions:

· Bring a change of clothes, including socks, in case a change is needed due to wet and cold weather.

· Dress in layers of loose-fitting clothing.

· Cover and protect exposed skin from the harsh elements.

· Boots, hats, scarves, snow pants and mitts or gloves will help make recess an enjoyable time.

Kindergarten Registration Starts Friday January 17, 2020

Kindergarten registration begins Friday, January 17 for the 2020-21 school year. We look forward to

welcoming our new students and families to our school.

Children who turn four or five years old during 2020, live within the school boundary and whose parents/

guardians are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten.

There are two ways you can register for Kindergarten:

Online. You can access the online registration information at bit.ly/KindergartenYRDSB. A laptop or

desktop computer is strongly recommended to complete the online registration, rather than a

mobile device. Once you have completed the forms online, you will need to take some required

documents to your school for verification only.

In person. Families are welcome to visit the school in person to register beginning January 17.

Registration forms are available at the school or on the Board’s website at bit.ly/

KindergartenYRDSB.

Please tell your friends and neighbours.

French Immersion Session and Registration Reminder

Information Sessions Information sessions for Grade 1 entry into the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools that have a Grade 1 program on January 16, 2020 at 7 p.m. Please visit YRDSB’s website in January 2020 http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Program-Locations.aspx to find the FI program location for your elementary school location.

Registration FI registration will begin on January 17, 2020. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2020, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call their home school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. This Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to the designated FI program location to register, between January 17 and February 7, 2020. Registration during this period is not first come, first served. Late Registrations Late registrations are those submitted after February 7, 2020. Late registrations will be treated on a first- come, first-served basis and will be considered subsequent to registrations received during the registration period should overflow be necessary. Accommodation Plan YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. Space requirements at some schools may mean that siblings are in different schools for primary dual track French Immersion programs due to differing grade structures. Like any of our schools across the Board, changes to school boundaries, and/or the accommodation model for the French Immersion program may need to be considered when new schools open, a school experiences enrolment growth, and program changes occur. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools.

More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI

accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require

short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow

refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school

or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.
