Immanuel’s Word

A Message from Pastor Borghardt

“A New Year’s Resolution from your Pastor”

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

Merry Christmas! In the Name of Jesus. Amen. They called Him “Jesus,” the name given to Him by the angel before He was born. They called Him “Jesus" because He would save His people from their sins.

“Jesus” means “the Lord saves.” That’s what He does! He saves His people — He saves you. He saves you from death. He saves you from hell. And not just you — He saves all who believe in Him and call on His Name.

You don’t deserve Him saving you. You didn’t earn it. Jesus does what God promised by grace alone: He saves His people from their sins with His holy life and His bitter suffering and death on the Cross.

You have made some promises in the New Year. You resolved to make 2019 better than 2018. You’ll eat healthier. You’ll give up your foul language. You’ll work out. I’m sure what you resolved to do is great and I am praying that you will do all that you have resolved to do and more.

I’m going to add something to your list of resolutions. I’m your pastor, I can do that. It’s in my job description! I’m going to ask you to resolve to add more Jesus to your life in 2019.

Resolve to have more Jesus in 2019: More Church, more Bible Class, more Sunday school for your children and grand children. Volunteer more. Sing more. Chant more. Help with Walk with Jesus and the February Higher Things Retreat at Immanuel. Give more. Lift up your neighbor more. Spend more time at church soaking up the Lord’s gifts.

Jesus doesn’t need you. He doesn’t need anything. He’s God. He keeps His promises. He saves His people — He saved you.

But, you know what I mean and you know you want and you need more Jesus in 2019. You could use more forgiveness, more eternal life. You are hungry for more of the Lord’s Supper. You could learn more about Him in Bible Class. Your kids crave more Sunday School.

So, add more Jesus to your New Year’s Resolution. You need Him. For He will do His name for you. He will save you.

The Lord has brought us to another year. It’s the year of our Lord, 2019. Make His year be about Him: His Name, His saving you, His salvation won for you on the Cross and delivered to you more this coming year. Happy Jesus-filled New Year! Merry Christmas! In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
