Good fishing, good friends. That’s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ
The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on
Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the
50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.
President's Corner
Happy New Year!
Let’s hope 2018 will be a Great Year
of fishing for all of us!
During 2017, we had a lot of activities including a
number of charter fishing trips, a fluke tournament, a
fishing Derby, a dinner honoring our past presidents, a
variety of speakers at our club and very good
refreshments at our meetings, (Thanks to Nico) and
towards the end of the year, a bus charter fishing trip to
Stonington, Conn. that produced some very big sea bass
and a few nice cod!
Speaking of refreshments, we had a lot of them at our
December 19th
Christmas party that included: veggie
platter (Jim Zimmer), sandwich platter (Dave
Nicholson), large Italian hero (Chuck Santoro) fresh
mozzarella and tomato tray (Kevin Morgan), chicken
wings (Don Lohse), potato salad (Harold Gusterson), a
big shrimp platter (Mark Capalbo, Rick Reitano, Miguel
Manzo), cookie tray ( Neil Siegel), chili (Dave
Huebner), sausage & broccoli rabe (Jim Catanzaro),
calamari salad (Jim Piobino), peppers salad (Lou
Castellano), rice pudding (Tony Lill), cookie tray
(Marvin Oresky), chicken & rice casserole (Mike Pules),
soda (Alan Morganstein), cookie tray (Mike Cargill),
jerky (Jack Walker), macaroni salad (Sal Tumminello,
and a deli platter(John Toth). I know that I am missing
some of you. There was a cheese cake and an apple pie
and soup on the table unaccounted for. The food came
fast and furious and it was hard to keep track of who was
bringing what. Member Don Lohse gave me this above
list of food items and I want to Thank Don for preparing
this list.
About that Big Blackfish at 22 lbs. on the front cover!
Member Bob Cameron caught this beauty and Bob
believes it is over 22 lbs. The scale it was measured on
showed the blackfish going up to 23 lbs., but it is hard to
be very accurate with scales when a boat is rocking back
& forth. So to be sure on claiming the weight of his fish,
Bob is going with 22 lbs. as the official weight. Bob
also released this fish so it can join its blackfish friends.
Below Barry Paull recently caught a blackfish at 15.5
lbs. on the same boat - The Fish Monger.
Speaker for our January 16th
Meeting
Captain Paul Eidman
Captain Eidman from the Angler Conservation Network
has been very involved in protecting bunker (menhaden)
and he will talk about his efforts to save this most
important fish in the sea. Without bunker, there will be
no bluefish or striped bass in our waters to fish for.
Speaker for our February 20th
Meeting
Douglas Zemeckis, Ph.D
Doug Zemeckis (Assistant Professor) from Rutgers
University will give a power point presentation on his
black sea bass study to estimate discard mortality in the
offshore winter fishery. He will also talk about ways to
increase the survival of fish that are thrown back.
March 20th
Our club’s Past President’s Dinner
This dinner is to honor all of the presidents who served
our club over its many years. Lots of food and prizes
will be available at an unbeatable cost of only $25.
More details on this dinner to follow in this bulletin.
New Club Membership Policy & Purchase
of Club’s Raffle Tickets
Our club membership dues are $35 for an individual
and $40 for family membership. The dues for a new
member joining our club is $40 for the first year and
$35 each year thereafter. Members, current and new, will be required as
club policy when renewing their 2018 membership to
buy two of our club raffle books for a total cost of $20.
(Each book has ten tickets in it at a cost of $1 for each
ticket). Members can either keep them for their own use
to possibly win one of the raffle prizes, or sell the tickets
and keep the $20 from selling their two raffle books.
This policy was explained by member Mark
Caplabo at our November 21st meeting and Mark alone
has sold over 1,000 tickets the past few years himself!
Mark further explained that he and his friends (Rick
Reitano) sell the majority of our raffle tickets, but our
club cannot count on this forever with changing
circumstances in the near future. We also have top
sellers for our raffle tickets at the upcoming shows
(Steve Totten & John Piazza) but this to can also change.
So, to have an ongoing revenue stream to cover the
club’s expenses relating to insurance fees, hall rentals,
speaker fees, postage, refreshments for our meetings and
other expenses, our club’s Board members voted to
institute this new membership policy with the starting of
the 2018 membership applications. All club members
must have their dues paid by April 2018 or they will be
removed from our club membership roster.
Congratulations go
to both Bob
Cameron & Barry
Paull!!
We have some
Hot Shot Anglers
In our Club!

our club by selling raffle tickets, giving out our club
bulletins and just talking about our club with anglers
stopping by. Craig is looking for a few volunteers to
spend some time at this store with him to help promote
our club and shoot the breeze with other anglers to
possibly join us. Give Craig a call at (973) 234-9618 or
see him at our January 16th
or February 16th
meetings if
interested.
Club Cook Book
Lou Castellano loves to cook and he has volunteered to
compile seafood recipes sent to him from our members
to make a club cook book. Lou wants your favorite
recipes that you have prepared and are the type you
would serve to your visiting guests.
As in most recipe formats, you would first list all of the
ingredients that go into the recipe. Then you next detail
the necessary steps to make your dish like over
temperature, marinating time etc.
See Lou at our meetings to discuss/show your recipes
and you can also contact him at (201) 264-3673 or at:
Fishing Management Issues – By John Toth
Letter to Governor Christie
At a November New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (NJOA) meeting that I chaired, one of the members indicated that
the NJOA should send a letter to Governor Christie requesting his help with several issues before he leaves office.
I wrote this following letter and it went out on NJOA letterhead. It was signed by Captain Pete Grimbilas as
NJOA Chairman, and me as NJOA President:
The Honorable Chris Christie,
Members of the New Jersey Alliance (NJOA) and its affiliate organizations would like to thank you for your
support of our agenda over the past eight years. Our association began when you sought your first term as
Governor and we invited you to speak at our New Egypt rally. It rained hard at this rally, but we did not mind the
rain since we wanted you for our Governor and not your opponent. The NJOA held another rally for you at Lake
Hopatcong to help you win your second term. As your second term ends, we would really appreciate your help
with the following three issues that are extremely important to our organization:
Approval of New Positions for the Bureau of Marine Fisheries - $1.3 million has been allocated to fill
nineteen (19) positions, but these positions have to receive new administrative titles, FTE’s, and only you have the
authorization to approve them. Funding for the Bureau of Marine Fisheries and adding new staff to help it to better
manage our fisheries has been one of NJOA’s major priorities. You can make that happen and we would be elated
and most appreciative if you gave your approval to authorize these new positions.
Blood Tracking Bill – This bill provides a humane method of tracking wounded deer since dogs would be legally
allowed to accompany hunters in finding their wounded animals. It is illegal for dogs to accompany hunters in
hunting for deer. Currently, this bill has been approved by the Senate and approval is expected by the Assembly
(A1616).
Candidates for Fish & Game Council – It is important that you approve two candidates for this Council
before you leave your office. Given the views of the new administration, we would not want to see it involved in
appointing new candidates to this Council. There are four candidates under consideration for appointment and all
four of them are very qualified for it. The two candidates the NJOA favors are Loren P. Robinson and Kenneth
Whildin.
We all want to THANK YOU for your continued support during your two terms in office! We all wish you
success and happiness with whatever path you and your family follow in the future.
Note: The 19 positions were approved by Christie, the Blood Tracking bill should be on Christie’s desk for
approval, and one candidate favored by the NJOA for the NJ Fish & Game has been approved by the Governor
and the other will be on his desk for approval before he leaves office. Normally, approval takes over a year. This
approval took just two months as fast tracked.
To be honest, I do not know if Christie approved the 19 positions because of my letter, but up until this letter was
written- little to no movement was made on the 19 needed positions. At a recent meeting at the Federation of
Sportsmen’s Clubs that I attended, Assistant Director of NJ’s DEP, Rich Boornazian shook my hand for writing it
to help the NJ DEP get approval for the 19 positions.
Sand Miming Issues
I and another member of the JCAA (Ken Warchal) were on a 4 hour conference call with the federal Bureau
of Energy Management (BOEM) along with about another 40 individuals who expressed concerns about sand
mining – the taking of sand from various areas in the ocean to replenish the beaches with sand that has been
washed away from storms like Sandy. There are locations in the ocean that have huge sand deposits, but are also
prime fishing areas that have been formed over many centuries. One of them is the huge Manasquan Ridge and
both Ken and I made our voices heard that the Manasquan ridge is off-limits to sand mining. It is insane to destroy
this big and prime fishing area by taking sand from it to be placed on beaches, and then see this sand wash away
after another storm.
Income Tax Exemption for Veterans
There are a number of veterans in our club. Veterans can file for a $3,000 exemption on their Income Tax return
for the State of New Jersey if you are a military veteran who was honorably discharged. What you will need is
your Form DD-214 that shows that you were in the military. Please consult with your tax preparer on the details
for receiving this exemption. When our state increased our gas tax recently, our legislators instituted this tax
exemption as part of this legislation.
