An American AuthorJan. 19 marks the birthday of one of America’s most
legendary writers, Edgar Allan Poe, born in 1809. He iscredited with inventing the detective tale andinfluencing authors from Jules Verne to Stephen King. Here are a few fascinating facts about the author of“The Raven” and “The Masque of the Red Death.”
• Poe rarely used his full name during his life, preferring “Edgar A. Poe” or “E. A. Poe.”
• Though we often see Poe in pictures with amoustache, he didn’t wear one until his lateryears, when the best-known daguerreotypes, orearly photographs, were taken of him.
• Poe loved cats; he often wrote with one sitting onhis shoulder.
• During his life, Poe was better known as a criticthan a story writer, and he entered into highlypublic feuds with other authors, including HenryWadsworth Longfellow.
• Poe tried to make a living with only his writing, helping to pioneer the idea of writing as astand-alone profession. But he never achievedfinancial stability and was often forced to ask formoney from friends.
• Many of the lurid details of Poe’s life were entirelythe invention of a rival, Rufus Griswold, whopenned an acidic obituary about Poe and tried toruin the author’s reputation. Griswold’s schemebackfired when the public became intrigued by thescandalous portrait of Poe and started readingmore of his work.

Paradise was the setting forElvis Presley’s eighth big-screenrole, and fans made this 1961romantic comedy the star’s mostsuccessful movie. Presley playsChad Gates, an ex-GI whocomes home to Hawaii, butinstead of joining the family’sfruitful pineapple business, hetakes a job as a tour guide. Light, funny and filled with scenes ofthe islands’ beauty and culture—plus a hit soundtrack of 14songs, including “Can’t HelpFalling in Love”—the filmmakes for a perfect escape fromthe winter blahs. We will befeaturing this Elvis movieamongst others in celebratinghis birthday on January 8. Weplan on celebrating the wholeweek, with samples of some ofhis favorite foods, fun facts, andwatching some of his movies.
Singing in the New YearAt one point or another, you
have surely heard or even sungalong to the old Scottish ballad“Auld Lang Syne.” The song titleliterally translates to “old longsince,” meaning “long, longago” or “days gone by.” Learnmore about this traditional NewYear’s number:
• The famed Scottish bardRobert Burns wrote hisversion of this traditionalsong about the enduranceof friendships in 1788,originally set to a tune heconsidered mediocre. Afterhis death in 1796, Burns’editor published the songset to a different “air,”which is the tune we usetoday.
• Popular during the CivilWar, “Auld Lang Syne” wasbanned in 1862 by theUnion Army after acrushing defeat by theConfederates at the Battleof Fredericksburg. Officerswere afraid the sentimentalsong about times gone bywould prompt wearysoldiers to desert theirposts.
• In the late 1920s, GuyLombardo’s bandpopularized the song as aNew Year’s tradition whenthey played it during a liveradio performance at thestroke of midnight on NewYear’s Day.
