The Wellness Specialists Biggest Piece of Advice to

Help You Reach Health in 2017

Go with what you like! I exercise every day. Do you know why? Because I enjoy it. When it comes to exercise why do something that you don’t enjoy? Sure, yoga is beneficial for everyone, but if you don’t enjoy it then don’t do it. If you would rather walk on the beach, take a Pilates class or work one-on-one with a trainer, then go with that. Too often people decide to start an exercise program that consists of 20 minutes on a treadmill followed by 20 minutes using machines. That way of exercising just isn’t for everyone. You’re more likely to implement sustainable habits of exercise and nutrition when you choose options that you enjoy. It’s 2017 and there are hundreds of ways to be physically active, so find something you enjoy that also allows you to exercise and then do it...often! Have a happy and healthy 2017. —Scott Getman Wellness Specialist

Welcome to 2017 and what promises to be an exciting year for the Huntington Beach Council On Aging and seniors in the community. As the new President of HBCOA, I want to first thank outgoing President Bob Dettloff, who has served these last two years with diligence and passion, most recently guiding the HBCOA through an essential strategic planning process as well as support for the new Senior Center in Central Park. Please also welcome the new HBCOA 1st Vice President Jane Burke, 2nd Vice President Don Gay, and the returning HBCOA Board members, all of whom work tirelessly to serve the seniors of Huntington Beach. A special note of gratitude goes to Pat Davis for her many years as a member of the HBCOA Board. Pat’s leadership, guidance and efforts have been invaluable to the organization and the well-being of HB seniors. Pat will be moving from the Board to help with a special HBCOA project, which I will talk more about in a later issue. As we start the new year, I want to thank you, our members and donors, for your support. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, HBCOA is dependent on the financial contributions of its members, revenue from fundraisers, and private donations, including bequests and legacy gifts. Our accomplishments are only possible because of you. Have a happy and healthful year ahead. Ed Pinchiff HBCOA President

Exercise & Cancer - Latest Research Recent research has shown the positive benefits of exercise when it comes to cancer. Studies have revealed that exercise is linked to increased life-expectancy after a diagnosis of cancer by decreasing the risk of recurrence. When exercising, epinephrine which helps circulate natural killer cells in tumors is released by the body. This causes cancer tumors to possibly shrink in size, and may even prevent them from forming. Compared to sedentary patients, those who exercised 3-5 hours per week lowered the odds of dying from cancer by about half. Not only can physical activity help the body and mind heal from cancer, it can also help prevent it from occurring. Exercise can often improve your immune system, it allows for the body to better fight off diseases, such as cancer. Other great impacts of physical activity include: less fatigue, more energy, fewer hospital stays and doctor visits, and higher self-esteem.

The Holiday Meals were sponsored by Huntington Terrace, HBCOA, and the Handy Crafters.

Handy Crafters Donated $4500 to Senior Programs!

Thank you to the Handy Crafters for their generous 2016 donation of $4,500!! The Handy Crafters fund programs and activities at the Senior Center in Central Park through the sale of their

handmade crafts. In 2016, the Handy Crafters funded Holiday Meals, Volunteer Awards, and 3 craft classes (Morning Masterpiece, Zen Doodling, and Cardketeers). This year, they also knitted blankets for Care Management Clients. To support the Handy Crafters, items may be purchased from the display case in the lobby or through yarn donations. All donated yarn must be used for projects that are sold to support the Senior Center in Central Park. All are welcome to join this friendly volunteer group. They meet each Friday morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Senior Center in Central Park to socialize, share patterns, and work on projects.

Beginning Knitting

Share your love of knitting. You don’t need to be an expert knitter to teach someone to knit! If you know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off, you can share these basics.
