Dear Members,
The 75th ARAE-FEARA Regatta, hosted by your Club, went off very well thanks to all the hard work by the behind-the-scene team of members who worked tirelessly in the days leading up to the event and through the entire week of the Regatta. The visiting teams were very happy with how well organised the Regatta was and the excellent condition of the boats. I must also extend my thanks to all the staff at MBC who worked so hard to make the event a success.
It was wonderful to have sub junior boys and girls participate in the scull races. This will serve as a good platform to introduce them to the ARAE tradition next year and I hope to see all of them grow as rowers in the years to come.
The enthusiasm of the super masters such as P. Venkataram, Arun Krishnan, S. Radhakrishnan, Revi Thomas, and Subba Rao, was wonderful to see. I hope it will serve as a call to rowing for other young members.
In the open category, Siddharth Sunil who has been waiting for a chance at the Macklin Scull Trophy, did well to win the Trophy. I am sure all of you join me in congratulating him on a well deserved win. The men’s fours crew, comprising of the two experienced hands Rohit Ravindra and Tushar Bansal combined well with the 2 youngsters Saket Reddy and Philip JJ, and did well to get the silver against a strong Colombo crew. The MBC Men’s B fours crew put up a good effort and I hope will use this experience to grow as a crew and reach their potential. Unfortunately, for the last 2 years we have not had a set crew for the women’s fours. However, they put a brave effort.
The Colombo crew has clearly been training hard for the last few months, and it showed in their performance at the ARAE. We at MBC should take a leaf out of Colombo’s book and work hard towards building up our crew.
Three years ago, the ARAE committee had planned to introduce a new trophy, but this, unfortunately did not happen. This year, MBC took initiative to ensure the trophy was introduced - the Borun Chanda Trophy for the Most Deserving Masters Oarsperson. Another first at this ARAE was the participation of three teams from Chennai other than MBC. The participants from these 3 teams also happen to be MBC members. We are sure this will promote the sport of rowing further.
After a gap of five years, MBC has hosted an important regatta. We have tried to use this opportunity to improve facilities at the club. In terms of managing the races, we had about 50 races a day (in 2 lanes) and the team did a wonderful job in managing this. We hope to shift to 3 lane racing at the 150th year regatta. No doubt, the ARAE-FEARA experience will serve us well in organising the 150th year regatta.
Warm regards, James Joseph
Captain of Boats

This quote captures the essence and the spirit of the 75th ARAE-FEARA Regatta, 2017, which came to a close on Pongal day at the Madras Boat Club with some scintillating races. A fitting end to four hectic days, with an average of 60 races conducted each day.
The prestigious Macklin Scull Trophy was won by Siddharth Sunil of the Madras Boat Club who beat Hashen Hettigoda of the Colombo Rowing Club by a boat length.
The equally prestigious Willingdon Trophy for the Men’s Coxed Fours was won by the Colombo crew consisting of Manilka Gunaratna, Prathap Pereira, Shehan Muthugalla, Ruwen Werasinghe and Lasaru Kuddlilama. They beat the much fancied Madras Boat Club (MBC) crew of Rohit Ravindra, Tushar Bansal, Philip JJ, Saket Reddy and Anirudh Sanjeev. Both Rohit and Tushar have won the Willingdon many times over the last twelve years, while Philip and Saket are relatively new to the ARAE.
The Hussain Trophy for the Women’s Single Scull was won by the very charming and almost unbeatable Ishara Abbey of Colombo. She overcame Yamini Singh of the College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune by the proverbial whisker!
Dilki Wijeyaskhara, Jatri Marapana, Amani Tissera and Ishara Abbey won the MBC Trophy
in the Women’s Fours, beating the team from Bengal Rowing Club (BRC).
Colombo made a clean sweep of all the women’s events in the open category, winning the Double Scull, the Pairs, and the Women’s Fours.
In the FEARA Masters Coxed Fours for Men, the CME team consisting of P Rajanesh, Raghuveer Singh, Inderpal Singh and Mujieeb Rehman beat the Madras Boat Club team consisting of Satish, Karthik, Prem and Vivek coxed by Radhakrishnan. The men from Madras put up a very brave fight against the much fancied CME crew, which included Inderpal Singh who has represented India many times.
The FEARA Super Masters, Coxed Fours for Men was won by the team from BRC, which beat the team from Lake Club, Kolkata, to win Gold in the event. However, it was the MBC crew consisting of Antony, Kalyanasundaram, Arun Krishnan, Shivkumar, and coxed by Ananya that won everybody’s hearts by putting in a sterling performance to win the Bronze.
The ARAE open Men’s Overall Trophy, the Hooghly Cup, was won by Colombo with 36 points; the ARAE open Women’s Overall Trophy, the Adyar Cup, was also won by Colombo with 38 points; the Ergometer CME Trophy was shared by MBC and BRC with 16 points each. The newly
instituted Most Deserving Master Oarsperson, Borun Chanda Trophy, was awarded to Soumen Das of the Bengal Rowing Club.
The Overall Trophy was won by BRC with 110 points, MBC came 2nd with 88 points, Colombo came 3rd with 83 points and CME a close 4th with 81 points.
CME won the Overall FEARA Masters Men and Women category with a total of 38 points, while BRC won the Sub Junior category with a total of 44 points.
Lt. Gen. Vishwambar Singh, VSM, Director General of Weapons and Equipment and Colonel Commandant, The Madras Sappers was the Chief Guest for the evening. Mr. Bharat Joshi. British Deputy High Commissioner, Chennai and family also came to witness the races. Gen. Vishwambar Singh, a passionate Oarsman himself, said that he was delighted to see the enthusiasm with which the racing was conducted and glad to note that both young and not so young had participated. He was referring to the Sub juniors on one hand and the Veteran race on the other where the MBC coxed fours had an average age of 65 plus.
The spirit with which this Regatta was held should be applauded. While competition was fierce on the water, and there were many hard fought races, in the final analysis we believe that the sport of Rowing carried the day!
