Project Updates

*Our annual Women of the ELCA Potluck Christmas Party was held December 4th at 5:30 PM. All wom-en of Christ Lutheran were invited to attend. We had a delicious supper followed by singing of Christmas carols. Those with prayer partners then exchanged their gift. A Christmas story was read by Nita Enderson. It was announced we will have Prayer Partners in 2017, but instead of gifts, we will have a donation to help a needy family at Christmas.

Linda Simonson talked about the national Women of the ELCA convention to be held in Min-nesota this summer. More information will be com-ing in 2017 about this unique opportunity for women of CLC.

We also want to announce that we will be having our meetings after our Church Service the 2nd Sunday of each month. We invite women to join us and give input and ideas how we can be “Bold Women,” spreading the news of Jesus in our Church as well as in our community and the world. Beginning at the meeting on January 8th, we will set a date for a planning retreat where 2017 officers will be elected and we will develop the agenda for the retreat and 2107 projects. If you have an idea for a project please plan on coming to the meeting.

If you were not able to be with us on Consecration

Sunday we have the 2017 Estimate of Giving sheets in

the narthex. As we anticipate Christ Lutheran’s minis-

try needs/opportunities for the upcoming year, we are ask-

ing our members to give a financial commitment to CLC as

a witness to the mission we share and serve. Please re-

turn to them to the church office at your earliest conven-

ience. Thank You!

If you are changing your giving amounts and are en-

rolled in “Simply Giving” you will need to submit the

Simply Giving change form to the Treasurer or the

Church Office to reflect the change in 2017. Forms are

located on our website, in the narthex or the church

office.

The 2016-2017 Time and Talent sheets are in the nar-

thex. Please take the time to pick up a sheet and decide

on how you can help serve Christ Lutheran Church with

your talents. It takes many people to help with worship

services, altar guild, choirs and Sunday School etc.

….Return your sheets to the church office or the offering

plate. Thanks for your support!

All Members! If you have recently moved, or changed your phone number, please notify the church office with your new address or phone num-ber.

CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH LUTHERAN COL-LEGE SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION This is the fifteenth year of the scholarship program at Christ Lutheran, and this congregation continues to show wonderful support for our students attending Lutheran colleges. Two students are receiving assis-tance at college this year with the help of the Christ Lutheran Church Lutheran College Scholarship pro-gram.

For our current high school students, consider the colleges of our Church when making your plans for the future. (Augsburg, Augustana, Gustavus, Lu-ther, Concordia-Moorhead, St. Olaf, Waldorf, Wart-burg, and more!) Information will come out in the spring of 2017 regarding the May 15 scholarship deadline.

For our congregation, consider giving to the scholarship fund to support Christ Lutheran students who choose to attend colleges of the ELCA. Dona-tions can be made to the account any time during the year, either by placing a check or envelope in the of-fering plates or delivering to the Church office, la-beled “CLC Scholarship Fund.” If you use the elec-tronic giving, please follow up with an email to the church office to designate the funds.

ON GIVING

The Joy of Giving

While walking along the streets of my small Wisconsin hometown I found a wallet lying on the sidewalk. I stopped to pick it up and quick-ly discovered a large sum of money housed in its folds. While I was only 12 years old at the time, even in today's inflated economy the money in that wallet would be a significant amount. Just imagine the thoughts that ran through my mind as I held that wallet. After all, I was a young boy who got less than a dollar a week in allowance. "What should I do?" I thought. Tempta-tion loomed large. "Oh what I could do with this money!" My heart was pounding as I dove fur-ther into the wallet to see if I could find out who was missing this stash of cash. Among the usual wallet cards and papers I found the owner's ID. It turns out I knew the owner. His name was Tom, a popular high school jock several years older than I. I didn't know him well. I just kind of admired him from afar. He certainly didn't know who I was. After a few more financial fantasies, I went home and rang him up on the phone. I ex-plained that I had his wallet and he could come pick it up. And here's the defining moment that I remember all these years later: Tom was ex-tremely grateful not only for the fact that I'd found his wallet, but also that I'd actually offered to return it to him intact. Tom exuded thanks. He offered a reward. I remember his words, "You've given me an early Christmas present." His grati-tude certainly wasn't lost on me, but it hadn't occurred to me that this was any kind of a "present." After all, I was just returning to him

what was his in the first place. I declined a re-ward and mumbled something about "the golden rule." As I replayed the afternoon's events, I knew I had done the right thing, and an uncom-mon sense of joy came over me. A new "joy of giving" had been stamped indelibly on my psy-che. And now, many years later, Jesus' admonish-ment of how we are to treat others, as recorded in Luke, echoes through the halls of my memory, "for the measure you give will be the measure you get back." At this time of year, we are filled with re-newed awe and wonder. This greatest gift of all--the gift of God's son--inspires us to emulate it in some way with our own generosity. In the coming New Year let us resolve to give freely of ourselves. When we give to others, we give to God. Acting as God's children we put to use what was never really ours. There is no greater joy! by Mark Quade
