MIRKA UK is launching its new Gold Maxabrasive line-up specifically for long, narrow andwide-belt sanders designed for paint and lacquer
sanding. Its stearate coating minimises cloggingand pill forming when the abrasive is in use, leading to increased durability of the product and
less downtime for the machine. The abrasive’s blue fired aluminium oxide
grains enable it to achieve a high cut rate evenon harder paints. Its innovative anti-static E-paper provides
the abrasive with added strength and stabilityto offer efficient sanding and a smooth surfacefinish, whilst the semi-open coating minimisesthe dust loading on the abrasive, so that it canbe used on a variety of intermediate and finesanding applications. Gold Max is available in rolls, narrow and

Weinig InTech 2016: Paving the way for the future with W4.0 DigitalTHE Weinig Group can look back on another successfulInTech, the company’s traditional in-house trade fair. Around 1,000 customers from 32 countries accepted
the invitation to Tauberbischofsheim to gatherinformation and gain inspiration for new investments. At this event Weinig presented its complete range
covering the entire value chain in solid wood processingover more than 4,000 m2 and underlined its leadingposition in Industry 4.0, a key issue for the future, withW4.0 Digital technologies. A total of 30 machines and systems were sold across
the group. The order volume was significantly higherthan the previous InTech in 2014. At the press conference on the eve of the in-house trade
fair, chief executive officer, Wolfgang Pöschl also reportedon the pleasing growth of the Weinig Group. The mix of live demonstrations and practical
information so popular with Weinig customers onceagain shaped the agenda at the22nd InTech. A central theme was digitization
of production, for which Weinighas developed an extensiveportfolio of solutions. These rangefrom “System Plus” for planing andprofiling and “OptiPal” for cuttingto “Fencon” and “master computertechnology” for windowproduction. Machine monitoring and
predictive maintenance are furtherkey issues covered by Weinig, particularly via its innovative“Service app”. In addition, in “Millvision”,
Weinig provides a high-performance solution for furnitureproduction. Group company, Holz-Her offers
an attractive concept in the cutting of panels with the“smart workshop”. All of these systems target “maximumtransparency of processes”, as chief sales officer, GregorBaumbusch explained. The most important thing, he stressed, is to “achieve
improvements in terms of costs, availability and resourcesfor customers whilst keeping operation as simple aspossible.” The requirements placed on businesses by Industry 4.0
were illustrated by Prof Dr Hube in his accompanyingpresentation, which drew aninterested crowd on everyday of the in-house trade fair. ‘Data is the fuel of the 21st
century,’ stated theeconomist, adding that hebelieves that thisdevelopment applies not onlyto components of productiontechnology, but also to allprocesses within thecompany. In the first instance, he
recommended a carefulreview of the company’sreadiness for the majorchallenge beforecommencing with the firstpilot projects.
Besides the central themeof “digitization ofproduction”, the ProductUnit Planing and Profilingwas in particular demandfrom visitors to InTech 2016. A number of orders were
taken for the Powermat 2400moulder among othermodels. The Weinig “ClassicShop” with its wide range ofpre-owned machines wasalso able to secure agratifying order tally. The presentations from
Weinig Concept, currentlyenjoying great success in themarket with complete system
solutions, also drewsignificant attention. The numerous innovations
at InTech included theOptiCut S60 wflex+ cuttingsystem for fully-automatedlength and width cutting in asingle work stage, theenhanced ProfiPress T NextGeneration gluing press and
four-sided contour milling. The innovation sees Weinigtransfer a typical processing center application to aprofiling machine. Visitors were also able to witness complete customer
systems in action including, for the first time, furnitureproduction on the Conturex system. A demonstration of complex installations will be made
possible by the integration of the assembly halls into theexhibition space. ‘This is a great opportunity for InTech,’ underlined
Wolfgang Pöschl. On the eve of InTech, the chief executive officer joined
chief sales officer, Gregor Baumbusch, chief financialofficer, Gerald Schmidt and the product unit directors toanswer questions from 30 members of the trade press. One recurring theme was the company’s financial
figures. Accordingly, the group expects to achieve aturnover of €380m for the current year.
This represents an increase of 6 per cent year on yearfor Weinig, which claims to be the world market leader inmachines and systems for solid wood and panelprocessing. ‘On the whole this represents pleasing growth, which
we currently expect to continue next year,’ concludedWolfgang Pöschl.

Fitzgerald Kitchens managingdirector, Eamonn Fitzgerald, who invested in the specialistwoodwork CAD/CAM softwarein 2015 and says that it wasonly when he started using itthat he realised how indispen-sable it really is.Initially installing Cabinet
Vision Solid Essential, the com-pany – based in County Wick-low, in the Irish Republic –quickly upgraded to Solid Ulti-mate, along with the Screen-To-Machine Ultimate module forsending accurate NC code to thecompany’s two Homag Weekenesting machine tools; a DHP210 with 9ft x 7ft bed and BHP200 with 9ft x 5ft bed.Mr Fitzgerald says that Cabi-
net Vision has been instrumen-tal in expanding his company’strade operation, particularlyrepeat business from housingdevelopers. For example, a recent four-
week 500,000 euro job for adeveloper in Limerick, saw€145,000 worth of furnitureleaving the factory each week, with only two fully-qualifiedcabinet makers and eight semi-skilled workers involved in themanufacture.‘A couple of years ago we were
barely turning over 500,000euro a year. Now, in the first sixmonths of 2016, the business-to-business side of the companyturned over almost 2 millioneuro,’ says Eamonn Fitzgerald. He says the fact that Cabinet
Vision does what skilled workersused to do and that it is not sim-ply a question of them settingout to save money.‘Skilled people just aren’t out
there anymore. Many of themwent abroad during the difficulteconomic times of a few yearsago and haven’t returned to Ire-land,’ says Mr Fitzgerald. The company incorporated a
number of the dif ferent con-struction methods they use intoa drop-down menu in CabinetVision. These include Briarcon-nect, face frame, groove back, inframe, onefix, robes, standardand standard dowel. And for manufacturing four
dif ferent styles of kitchen –Painted, In-Frames, Contempo-rary and Shaker – they use fourdifferent production processeswith different hardware.‘We j u s t s c r o l l d own t o
whichever dialog we want andopen it to edit the cabinet. Due toCabinet Vision’s parametriccapabilities, everything changesin proportion, resulting in a per-f e c t a s semb ly that w i l l f i ttogether on site. This means thatwe can change things like goingfrom a cheaper hinge to a dearerhinge, immediately, at the clickof a button,’ says Mr Fitzgerald.Producing something “of f-
standard” was difficult in thecompany’s pre-Cabinet Visiondays.‘If we were using the beam
saw t o make a numbe r o fkitchens with units of 720mmhigh x 300mm deep, they wouldthen go on to point-to-point forstandard drilling for shelf holesand locations for the hinges...a f ter which, the fabricatorassembled the units. If someonewanted units of a different size itwas very time consuming.‘However, us ing Cabinet
Vision, if a unit needs to be 1mhigh, instead of 720mm or900mm, we can do it by simplyediting an existing cabinet inour library,’ says Mr Fitzgerald.Working mainly with 2.8m x
2.1m boards of MDF and chip-board a typical nest comprisesbetween 15 and 20 panels.‘It’s absolutely vital that every
component is cut to an accurate, perfect shape with all holes in
the right place,’ says Mr Fitzger-ald.This was something that the
beam saw could not always pro-duce, as Mr Fitzgerald says thatthe components would oftenmove off-square.‘We had to create a program
on the point-to-point, so i twould go round the parts andsquare them,’ says Mr Fitzger-ald.He says that there is no doubt
that Cabinet Vision has trans-formed the company in theshort time they have been usingit.‘The nesters run on the early
shift from 6 am, driving bothmachines and do the same forthe late shift from 12 noon to8pm. All programs are gener-ated in Cabinet Vision, cuttingeverything we make, ensuringthat we can ship around 40completed kitchens and 250bedrooms each month,’ says MrFitzgerald.Eamonn Fitzgerald, who runs
the company with his brother,Des, designs his initial cabinetdrawings, then transfers theminto Cabinet Vision for editingand manipulation to ensure thatt h e N C c o d e e n ab l e s t h emachines to cut exactly whatthe customer requires.‘This is vital for cases where
the back of a unit has to be cutto fit around a pillar, or to createa wine rack in the unit . In addition, many developers needoven and microwave configura-tions, which need to be cus-tomised. That’s all done in Cabi-net Vision and is cut in theworkshop instead of the fitterhaving to cut it to fit, when itarrives on site,’ explains MrFitzgerald. He adds that whenever a
design is completed, it is storedin Cabinet Vision for use as apossible starting point when acustomer wants something sim-ilar.Overall, the combination of
Cab inet Vi s ion’s ab i l i ty toquickly produce accurate com-ponents and then nest them, with the Screen-To-Machinemodule generating NC code forperfect cutting, means that, inaddition to their standard turn-around time of s ix to eightweeks, they can always meetsome hous ing deve loper s ’demands for getting the units tosite within a fortnight.‘Cabinet Vision has been vital
in increasing our piece partactivity, which is the only way toincrease margins, as the jobswe’re getting are being cut tothe bone all the time. In order toobtain a profitable margin wehave to make our furniturefaster, cheaper and better, whileensuring high quality,’ con-cludes Mr Fitzgerald.

HETTICH has added a new dimension to the modern kitchen experiencewith a drawer system, which combines the features of soft close and Push-to-open. This award-winning revolution in furniture technology is nowavailable in the UK.Push-to-open Silent is now offered for Hettich’s premium ArciTech
drawer system. This entirely mechanical solution (no power supplyrequired) is ideally suited to handle-less kitchens. It can be viewed andtested at the company’s prestigious and newly-remodelled showroom inSalford.A gentle push on the front panel is all it takes to open the drawer and
another gentle push closes the drawer quietly and smoothly.Push-to-open systems typically require more forceful closure to override
the opening mechanism. However, Hettich’s innovative Push-to-openSilent means no more compromise – the opening and closing action fordrawers can be equally convenient and satisfying for the user. The opening force can be adjusted according to user preference and to
allow for different drawer weights. The system is hidden from view underthe drawer and can even be retro-fitted with no modification.‘This is such an impactful way to add value to a kitchen,’ says Hettich
UK marketing manager, Colin Patterson. ‘Push-to-open Silent is sure to impress customers in the showroom. It
provides a real talking point and represents a great solution for modernhandle-less kitchens,’ he adds.

AN EAST Yorkshire staircase manufacturer haspurchased a second wood waste heater fromWood Waste Technology, after the team was soimpressed with the quality and efficiency of thefirst heater. TK Stairs is one of the UK’s largest direct to
customer staircase manufacturers, supplying toboth trade and public since it started in 2003.The business moved to its larger current prem-ises last year and immediately invested in aWT15 from Wood Waste Technology to heat itsmachine area, one of three main areas in its30,000ft2 premises. A year on, and the com-pany has been so impressed with the heater thatit has purchased another WT15 for the assem-bly area. ‘We already had a wood waste heater, from a
different manufacturer, which worked fine inour old premises when it had a much smallerarea to heat – but it just wasn’t up to the jobwhen we moved to our new larger premises, sowe re-utilised it by moving it into the assemblyarea and bought the new WT15 to use in themachine area instead, explains managingdirector, Kevin Parsons. However, once we’d seen how efficient the
heater from Wood Waste Technology was, werealised it would be better to invest in a secondWT15 for the assembly area, rather than relyon our existing heater, as there was simply nocomparison in terms of quality and efficiency,’adds Kevin. The investment in wood waste heaters will
save the business money on both waste disposaland heating bills. Before moving to biomasstechnology, the company was spending around£150/week on skips to remove its wood offcutsand other wood waste. The business tries to beas economical with its wood waste as possible,by also compressing its sawdust into briquettes, which burn well in the wood waste heaters. ‘We’re delighted with the service received
from Wood Waste Technology and consider thecompany’s products to be second to none. We’renot surprised to hear that all the wood wasteheaters they’ve ever produced are still in opera-tion today. We’d have never guessed that there’dbe that much difference between the quality ofmanufacturers machines and are so glad thatwe’ve purchased our latest ones from WoodWaste Technology!’ continues Kevin.Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of
wood waste heaters, from small hand-firedunits to larger fully automatic systems andoffers site survey and design, as well as manu-facture, installation and on-going mainte-nance. The company also services all types ofwood waste heaters and supplies genuine sparesup to 60per cent cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the
UK’s official distributor for Gross ApparatebauGmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmausboiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful butgentle routine maintenance solution that isquick and easy to use and helps to increaseboiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

THE latest edition of Alphacam, from VeroSoftware is rich with new features rangingacross the modules, making it easier to use andimprove productivity.Amongst the new and enhanced functionality:
• User interface improvements.• New 3D Machining command.• Updates to Machining cycles.
Alphacam 2017 R1 EnhancesSimulation and Automation
• Sawing enhancements.• Simulation updates.• Automation Manager improvements.• New CAD files and versions. The overall user experience has been
augmented in a number of ways, includingrestyled dialogs to provide a more intuitivelayout, with images and tool tips included tohelp the user.An example is the new 3D Machining
dialog, which provides the interface to multiplemachining strategies in a consistent manner.Strategies available in the 3D Machiningcommand are: Along Intersection; ConstantCusp; Cylindrical Parallel; CylindricalProfiling; Drive Curves and Z ContourRoughing. The Work Plane Properties option in the
Project Manager displays a window with a gridcontaining details of the work planes in theactive drawing, such as the name and offsetnumber, which can also be edited in the grid.Additionally, it is now possible to rename themove clamp/fixture operation in the Quick Editwindow.A new option in Drawing Notes means that
the Add-ins dialog will only be displayed if theopened drawing file already contains notes. In Machining, the Cylindrical Parallel
strategy now gives the option of setting thewidth of cut as a distance and when editingsettings, the Drawing Area will update with apreview of the tool and holder, if applicable. The machining area is indicated by a
transparent shaded region around the partthat is automatically updated when settingsare changed in the dialog, allowing the user tovisualise the effect that a change has on theoperation.Alphacam Router now includes improved
foul avoidance for sawing. Previously whenusing a saw to cut parts, the risk of foulingother parts was increased, due to the size ofthe blade.Alphacam 2017 R1 sawing operations now
checks for fouling against all geometriesselected for the same operation, resulting intool-paths being trimmed, if necessary. Thismeans that parts can be laid out on a sheetand all sawn as the same operation, using theautomatic fouling check. The operator can usethe new path extensions tool with options forextending saw paths by either, Distance, toBoundary or Pick Point, with reversingoptions. For Simulator, the new release sees XY
configurations supported on both the headand table. The transfer of five-axis tool-paths between
Alphacam and the simulator has beenoptimised, meaning that complex operationscontaining tool-paths comprising thousandsof individual elements are much faster.Furthermore, if program stops are included inthe operation, they will now be recognised. Allthese improvements make the user experiencemore realistic and speed up the simulationprocess.Automation Manager sees several new
options that provide flexibility andperformance improvements, these include:Feature Extraction – From Faces: An option
that enables the user to extract the solid bodyoutline of the part. For non-nested job files the “From Job”
option is now available in the Machining Orderdrop-down menu in the Processing Tab. This isnow set as the default selection for non-nestedjob files.Alphacam 2017 R1 gives the ability to copy
and paste styles in the layer mapping set-uptree by right-clicking and selecting Copy orPaste on the menu. Settings are retained whencopying, which enhances efficiency byremoving the need to re-apply settings eachtime a style is applied to a layer. It is alsopossible to copy and paste a complete setup, ifrequired.General EnhancementsWork Volume support has been added for
the Parametric Sketcher – useful with manypost processors that require the work volumedimensions for the NC controller.User configurable Default Layer Setting –
useful when creating designs with set layerconfigurations.Improved Solid Model Assembly Splitting
Support for SolidWorks and Solid Edgeassemblies. The Area Estimate routine has been
improved to take account of drilled holes.Alphacam’s Network License Profiles allow
users to save their own selection of system andmodule licenses as a single profile, making itquick and easy to select pre-defined licenseoptions. For example, all network licensing users can
create their own set of License Profiles andcopy them to a shared folder on a nominatednetwork PC, ensuring that all users can accessthe same ones.A particular profile can be specified when
Profiles are being configured, or an option canbe checked to select one from the list displayedwhen the licensed application is run.

WHENEVER a new job comes into a companythat film studios describe as needing the “cav-alry,” digital designer and CNC supervisor, JasonSzukalski is instantly thinking how AlphacamCAD/CAM software will break it down intomachinable parts.‘We’re gaining a reputation for being the cav-
alry because we can pull things “out of the bag’for the studios, by doing urgent jobs for themextremely quickly. Alphacam’s the reason wecan achieve this,’ says Jason. With Watford-based Anarchy being just min-
utes away from the Warner Bros studios atLeavesden, that happens on a regular basiswhen a director changes their mind, or an actorneeds something different. The company also works closely with film stu-
dios at Shepperton, Pinewood and Elstree, creat-ing hi-tech futuristic, contemporary and periodset dressings and props. In addition, they have agrowing portfolio of work for television, point-of-sale and art installations.Film work includes using Alphacam to create
50 I.T. servers, entrance lobby desks for the lat-est in the Mission Impossible series, RogueNation, starring Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg;film chronometers, sextants, whalebones, chests, anchor chains and barrels for In TheHeart Of The Sea, starring Chris Hemsworthand retro control units and a number of gadgetsincluding bugs and bug detecting equipment forThe Man From U.N.C.L.E., directed by GuyRitchie.‘We sometimes think there’s no way we can
do their rush jobs in the time span they give us,but we’ve succeeded every time, because Alpha-cam creates models and CNC code so quickly. Wemay have only a couple of days to do an impos-sible job. However, Alphacam makes it possible,’says Jason.Typically, a line drawing for a film prop will be
in feet and inches, which he converts into mil-limetres and starts sketching it in Alphacam.‘I may use Creo to do some 3D work, then it
goes back into Alphacam where I break out allthe individual components for machining andsend the NC code to the machine,’ says Jason.Although he describes his three-axis Pratix
NST 8 x 4 router as an “entry-level” machine,he says driving it with Alphacam makes a bigdifference by producing highly complex items.‘Using Alphacam means that the Pratix per-
forms tasks it was not originally designed to do.You’d be hard pushed to look at some of ourhigh-end parts and not think they’ve come off afive-axis machine,’ says Jason.Around 95 per cent of Anarchy’s jobs begin
life as an Alphacam drawing and move on to therouter for cutting with Alphacam tool-paths.‘Then there are traditional model making
techniques for finishing and on to the spraybooth. If it’s a mechanical type of job there’ll beengineers working on it too, but Alphacam iscentral to everything – that’s what brings it alltogether.‘I’ve been using Alphacam for nearly 25 years
and as soon as I look at a job, I’m mentallybreaking it down into the machinable parts andthinking of the necessary workflow,’ explainsJason.Anarchy operates out of 5,000m2 premises
with four employees...calling on a number ofsub-contractors when they’re working on amajor film. They cut a wide range of material, including MDF, hardwood, softwood, alu-minium, brass, foam, Foamex, polycarbonate, nylon and chemiwood. Any steel work that isrequired is drawn up in Alphacam and sent to asubcontractor for laser cutting.Jason Szukalski, who is a director of Anarchy,
began his career as a model maker when every-thing was done by hand.‘I embraced CNC technology when it came in,
as I could see what a valuable tool it was and it’sabsolutely vital now I’m working with specialeffects, making objects and props for films andadvertising, which is very exciting.‘I can be sitting at home watching television
and when something suddenly comes on thatwe’ve made. It’s a real buzz!” concludes Jason.

Perfecting the process of evolution – successive ge “KEEP it simple” has always been myadvice if ever my opinion has beensought as to the best way forward asfar as advertising is concerned (writesJohn Emslie). However, one woodworking
machinery specialist company whichcertainly does not need my advice isthe Italian manufacturing giant,Biesse, whose clean and crisp and veryprecise message is amplydemonstrated in their double pagespread advertisement, which has beena regular feature in this and otherwoodworking trade journals over thepast few months.“The evolution of perfection – entry
level with a touch of class” are thewords chosen to sum up what Biessecan offer any company seeking toequip its workshop with the basicmeans of doing everything it needs todo. However, as far as those who
purchase their initial piece of Biesse machineryare concerned, this may well be just the evolutionas, like countless thousands of joinery workshopsbefore them, they have gradually moved awayfrom their entry level purchases, adding “a touchof class” with each and every successive purchaseof machinery from the renowned Italianmanufacturer. Why do so many of them choose to purchase
Biesse machinery time after time and what do thesix machines featured in what is rapidly becomingan iconic advertisement as far as thewoodworking machinery sector is concerned?Indeed, what exactly are the six models featured
in Biesse’s instantly recognisable double pagespread advertisement and what can they do interms of improving your business. Here, we make
a detailed examination of each model, one by onestarting with the…ACTIVE 400 PANEL SAWThe Active 400 sliding table circular saw has
only recently been added to the Biesse range. It isreckoned to be the ideal machine for craftsmen, being perfectly suited to the cutting of solidwooden components, plywood, MDF and particleboard, as well as laminated boards. In short, it provides the highest levels of quality,
combined with a high degree of precision andaccuracy. It offers the best possible results for themaximum number of specific requirements, as adirect result of its excellent sizing precision. The Active 400 features a rigid structure, which
ensures a high level of stability. In this model easeof panel handling and simple means of
adjustment combine to make this particularmodel extremely user friendly and, therefore, ideally suited to anyone setting up a small joineryworkshop for the first time.On the Active 400 the saw carriage is divided
into three sections – the main saw unit, thescoring unit and the saw carrying structure. On this entry level model the sliding carriage is
divided into two separate parts comprising thesliding base and the sliding table. High qualityanodised aluminium is used in the construction ofboth components. This model features a high precision CNC
working centre, which guarantees the reliabilityand accuracy of the sliding carriage. The widesliding table can be locked at any requiredposition, with the width helping to ensure
stability. combined with repeatability and cuttingprecision. It features a sturdily constructed crescent fence,
which can be adjusted with the turning angle. This permits a range of adjustments from +/- 45deg. The rigidity of the crosscut fence also helps toensure precise cuts and the fence itself can be re-positioned for the production of mitre cuts. The work piece holder can be easily removed, if
necessary and it can be mounted freely on thesliding table in accordance with the nature of thematerials being sized. The stops slide easily besidethe scale, which is tillable for improved viewing. The Active 400 also features an extension
crosscut fence, which is extendable to a maximumlength of 3,200mm. This is designed withspecially slanted surfaces with the purpose of
minimising the possibility ofscratching the work piece. In addition, the sliding block can
be made to slide freely on the roadbar guide and it can be locked intoposition with the handle, which ispart of the standard equipment onthis machine. Its position can besubject to fine adjustment bymeans of a turning knob, with theadditional provision of a highprecision ruler.Using the Active 400 means that
easy panel handling and simpleadjustment is a matter of course.Indeed, all the controls featured onthis machine are simple, makingthe machine extremely userfriendly. Likewise, externaladjustment of the saw blades isboth quick and easy.Users have come to appreciate
the incorporation of a hand wheelfor the adjustment of the sawblade’s inclination by means of anangle indicator, as well as the fineadjustment devices for setting thesaw blade up or down and in eitherthe left of right-hand position.Electrical adjustment of the saw
blade height is another usefulfeature, whilst a safety cover toprotect the operator from the sawblades is standard equipment.ROVER JFT 1530 CNCMACHINING CENTREThe Rover JFT 1530 made its UK
debut at W16 back in October oflast year. This 10 x 5 machining centre has aworking field of 3,078mm on the X axis,1,563mm on the Y axis and 200mm on the Zaxis.Maximum axes speed is:X = 22.5m/minY = 22.5m/minZ = 12.15m/minThe operating unit moves along the
longitudinal axis (X axis) and the transversal axis(Y axis) by means of a rack and pinion system (asystem which Biesse has been using for the past20 years). This allows for high acceleration andmovement speed. The mobile upright beam has two independent
drives – one of either side.As the operating unit moves in the vertical
direction (Z axis) with a relatively short traveltime, Biesse uses a ballscrew system with a pre-loaded nut for backlash compensation andrepeatability in positioning precision. Themovement is transmitted to the screw through aflexible joint. Two linear guides with recirculating balls are
located on every axis to ensure a high level ofprecision and smoothness of each movement. There is a centralised manual lubrication
system for the main movements: X axis: four
running blocks of the linear guides and two forthe racks (one on each side of the machine). The Y axis features four running blocks on the
linear guides and one for the rack Z axis: fourrunning blocks on the linear guides and one forthe ball screw nut.The table is divided into four independent
vacuum zones with manual selection. It featuresa vacuum locking system, with the work-tableproviding a pre-arrangement for both vacuumand electrical connection for the vacuum pumps. The machine frame is constructed from thick,
electro-welded steel sheets – all properlystrengthened in those areas liable to suffer mostfrom stress. The upright beam, which is mobile in the
longitudinal direction (X axis) is constructed ofelectro-welded steel and on the gantry structurethick steel sheets are used to re-inforce thetransversal elements to minimise any twistinggenerated by the material stress relief generatedby the metal machining. This means that thehighest levels of precision can be obtained.Nearly all of the technological components
featured on this machining centre (and othermodels manufactured by Biesse) are produced bycompanies within the Biesse Group, or bycompanies which are recognised worldwide and
which are included in Biesse’s“Register of Qualified Suppliers” –all of whom have worked in co-operation with Biesse for manyyears.Biesse runs tests of each of the
machining centres produced bythe company. These tests arecarried out in five parts:1. Intermediate control of theoperating units and pre-assembledcomponents.2. A non-stop running test for aminimum period of 10 hours.3. Control of the precision of the Xand the Y axes and positioningrepeatability by means of aninterferometric laser.4. Gauging of the X and the Y axesthough the software function: thevalues detected during the lasertests are elaborated by the NC andtransmitted to the axes drives inorder to improve the positioningprecision.5. Functional tests for routing andboring operations on differentpanel positionsFor its axes drives and motor
systems Biesse uses brushlessmotors, controlled by digital axesdrives and the interfacing between

based Industar, say that the feed-back about thevacuum is really positive and everyone who hastrialled it, comments on its superior performance. An early customer to purchase the Verhagen
F3313 Industrial and Turbo model, ChristopherShaw, director of Essex-based Garner and Shaw, says that since investing in the vacuum he hasbeen very impressed at how easy it is to use and itsoverall performance.Operating in the architectural and wood finish-
ing sector, Garner and Shaw has been providingspecialist wood spraying services to architects, door manufacturers, joinery companies and inte-rior designers for over 30 years. With a 32-strong workforce employed over two
sites, Mr Shaw takes his responsibilities to create asafe working environment seriously, making theremoval of waste from dust and wood shavings akey priority. When looking to purchase a new industrial
cleaner, he was impressed by the features andcleaning ability of the Verhagen F3313 model anddelighted with its performance. ‘The powerful suction ensures a clean environ-
ment each and every time and I would be happy torecommend it and Industar to anyone operating inthe woodworking industry, where waste is anissue,’ says Mr Shaw.Verhagen Leiden has been established for over
50 years and its name is synonymous with qualityin its native Netherlands. The product range is wellknown for its durability and low maintenancerequirements. Given the onerous health and safety require-
ments within the woodworking industry and thenecessity to keep the Environment dust-free, Ver-hagen Leiden products have a ready-made markethere, says Industar director, Ad Klabbers.‘The Verhagen Leiden range offers superb qual-
ity. I have grown up with the brand back homewhere it is a household name in the Netherlands,’says Mr Klabbers. ‘When we were selecting an industrial vacuum
range to promote in the UK, this brand standshead and shoulders above the rest in terms of itsperformance and durability.
‘It also comes with a range of additional attach-ments to make it particularly adaptable for mostworkplaces, able to penetrate the tightest cornerswhere dust may collect.‘Verhagen Leiden products can be used to
quickly clean surfaces, or as aspiration for pro-duction machines, because they are equippedwith the best filters in the market to ensure thehighest possible filtration.‘We are so convinced of the product’s perform-
ance and its particular suitability for the wood-working sector that we will provide a no-obli-gation, free demonstration for any company thatis interested to put one of our products to the testin its own workshop‘We believe that it is by far the best industrial
vacuum cleaner on the market today,’ concludesMr Klabbers.
STARBANKS new factory is 120000ft2 andwill include office block and despatch areas. The site covers a total of 16.5 acres and leavesa great area for future expansion. The aim of the site is for the company to
achieve its own sustainability with theinstallation of 1000 solar panels which willprovide 65-70 per cent of the necessaryelectricity, as well as a new voltage lossoptimisation sub-station to improve the overallusage of electricity. In addition, at the central point of the new
factory is a Viessmann biomass boiler plantinstalled by Mawera UK Ltd. The completeproject included wood storage, transfer, burning and the supply of hot water to thewhole factory. The first stage is to provide storage for the
factory produced wood off-cuts and, oncechipped, together with the wood dust; they arestored directly into the silo.Constructed from concrete sections and

sufficient to provide Starbank with heat for thewhole winter period.Storing through the summer will enable
Starbank to maximise wood usage in thebiomass boiler house that feeds the boiler. Theboiler is a Vitoflex 300 FSB-R-SE 950SE,which is capable of providing 160,000 kWhours/week of heating. The FSR Mawera plant is automatically
controlled by a flat moving grate with watercooling that is designed specifically for usewith dry materials, such as MDF, chipboardand melamine-covered boards.Oxygen control is used to govern the
combustion process. In the FSR plant, thisextends to control of the two sections of thecombustion unit, as well as the recirculationand mixing of flue gases with primary andsecondary air to lower Nitrous Oxideemissions. The flue gases are passed through two
sections of abatement – first, a multi-cyclone,which accepts the larger particles and then onto an electro-static filter which removes eventhe smallest particles before emitting them tothe atmosphere. Each section has an ash bincollection on the underside of each unit, sothat dust can be removed easily. The biomass installation is backed up by a
three-pass Viessmann Vitomax 300 gas boiler, which provides a full capacity heating systemand can also be used to top up the biomassinstallation. The total heating system is circulated
around the factory in distribution pipes.Pressurisation and expansion are controlledby a Flamco III automatic expansion and fillsystem. The hot water from both the biomass and
the gas boiler is pumped into a low loss distri-bution header from where it is circulated toSabiana heaters throughout the factory pro-duction area. There are different zones withinthe factory that can be adjusted independentlyvia thermostatic controls.

Dustraction before and their
working association and stan-dards of engineering meant thatwe could be assured of an inte-grated fit – which was exactlywhat we needed, because thefunding we had secured was fora complete package,’ he adds.‘Dustraction is used to work-

software, MagiCut. This package of solutions iscomplemented by needs-based handling systemsand ever more intelligent networking withupstream and downstream machines. The future: HOLZMA is constantly shapingthe future with new ideasThe spirit of inventiveness is the bedrock of
HOLZMA’s business and the key to its success. The many inventions of the company founderand later generations are evidence of this andinclude: the introduction of clamps on theprogram fence; the suspension of the machinesupports in the two frame stands and the squarepanel saw (cutting length = cutting width). The advantage was that this design of the rear
machine table, in conjunction with the clampsand a higher program fence speed, made realone-man operation of a beam saw possible. No less than 65 HOLZMA patents were granted
over the last 10 years alone. The clear aim behindall these innovations is the focus on improvingmanufacturing quality and increasing flexibilityand efficiency in the production process, whilstbearing in mind the needs of the customer. The means of achieving this are automation,
networked machines and freely flowing processes– from the warehouse via the office to the cuttingprocess and on to all other processing stations.An example of this is the new HPS 320 flexTec;
with this system, HOLZMA has revolutionised thecutting process in Batch Size 1 production. Thiscutting cell is purpose-designed for processingsingle panels and completely redefines the partsflow. Key features are fully automated processesand unlimited recuts. In addition to this, the HOLZMA HPP 300
multiTec has recently opened up undreamt-ofpossibilities. This new development allowscustomers to complete three processing steps onone machine: sawing, drilling and routing.Ready-to-assemble elements can be produced,
for example for facade and partition wallconstruction, or for the manufacture of concreteformwork. The team: “We are Panel Dividing”HOLZMA invests a great deal in training,
particularly for young apprentices who will growand mature to be the future of the business. Thiswill help the company to secure today the muchneeded skilled workers of tomorrow, thus pavingthe way for the future. HOLZMA is ready for thechallenges of tomorrow and will continue tooccupying a dominate position in the beam sawmarket for the foreseeable future.
HOLZMA celebrates 50 years at the sharp endFOR 50 years, HOLZMA has embodied topquality and precision in panel cutting. Thesuccess story began with the founding ofHOLZMA in 1966. At that time, it was newtechnical developments that drove the rapidgrowth of the company.Today, that focus continues, but also
encompasses optimally networked technologiesand innovations for highly efficient productionprocesses. The motto for the anniversary celebrations,
“We are Panel Dividing” sums up five decades ofHOLZMA. From 1966 up to the present day, generations of highly qualified employees withtheir ideas and skills have taken HOLZMA fromliterally being a “garage company” to its presentposition as a world market leader in paneldividing technology. Some 420 people are employed at the
company’s headquarters in Calw-Holzbronnalone. In addition, there are skilled employees atother production sites, including Barcelona,Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Bangalore. Together, they form the Business Unit Panel Dividingwithin the HOMAG Group, to which HOLZMAhas belonged since 1987.The beginnings: full of courage andentrepreneurial spiritThe success story started with Erwin Jenkner
who, as founding father, shaped HOLZMA withhis exceptional creativeness, great courage andentrepreneurial spirit. When he registered the HOLZMA name in May
1966, it was already a household name inGermany among window manufacturers, but notyet for saws.In 1967 Erwin built the first horizontal saw
with a saw unit running under the table. Themodel served mainly to cut solid wood. It wasequipped with a hydraulic drive unit, but stilllacked a pressure beam and a scoring saw.The growth: faster than the competitionWhen a growing demand for saws capable of
cutting melamine-laminated chipboard becameapparent, Erwin Jenkner instigated theconstruction of the next generation saw.Erwin’s son, Detlef Jenkner was responsible for
the new development; he was studyingmechanical engineering in Constance at the timeand also took on the design work. He officiallyjoined the company in 1969, increasing thenumber of employees to six.In 1970 the first panel saw with pressure beam
and electronically controlled lateral fence rolledoff the production line. From then on, HOLZMAequipped all its saws with a scoring unit that wasadjustable horizontally and vertically from theoutside.
The company was growing at a rapid rate andthere was no longer enough space in the garage. In order to facilitate expansion, a plot of land waspurchased in nearby Holzbronn and thecompany’s new headquarters were situatedthere.Just over a year later, the company moved into
its new premises at Holzbronn, where eightemployees produced panel saws for the worldmarket in an initial area of 1500m2. Bycomparison, today the facility in Holzbronnboasts a production area of around 30,000m2.The internationalisation: leading the fieldin new territories1971 was also the year in which HOLZMA
supplied the first machine for cutting strips toEngland. One year later, the company took itsfirst order for an angular saw unit. The orderread quite simply and precisely: “Fully automaticangular system, 2500mm x 1250mm, asdiscussed … 476,000.00 DM”.The company was now achieving annual
growth rates between 10 and 30 per cent. Theexport ratio rose to 90 per cent and by the mid-1970s HOLZMA was supplying customers inAustralia, North America and the Far East. When, in the late 70s, the use of chipboard
and MDF boards increased sharply in NorthAmerica, HOLZMA, decided to take the big step
across the Atlantic. This led to the founding ofHOLZMA US, Sales and Service, in Gastonia,North Carolina in 1981.The USA became HOLZMA’s strongest export
market and it was soon supplying more machinesto the USA than to the home market. HOLZMA
US was taken over by the well-known tradingcompany Stiles Machinery, which itself became amember of the HOMAG Group in 2015.In the HOMAG Group: established as aworld market leaderIn 1986, HOMAG Group AG was looking for a
specialist horizontal beam sawmanufacturer. HOLZMA seizedthis opportunity for furthergrowth and, with its 220employees, joined the HOMAGGroup in 1987.Scarcely three years after
joining the HOMAG Group,HOLZMA had virtuallydoubled its workforce andestablished itself as a worldmarket leader for panel saws.HOLZMA has not onlymaintained this position, butalso continues to expand itsglobal presence. The product portfoliotoday: solutions from Size Sto XXLRegardless of whether
customers choose an entry-level saw from the 1 or 2series, a classic HOLZMA sawfrom the 3 or 4 series, or theyinvest in an industrial-scalemodel from the 5 or 6 series, they will always benefit from amachine with leading-edgetechnology and enormouspotential for customisationthanks to needs-based optionalfeatures. As a world market leader in
horizontal panel dividingtechnology, HOLZMA thinksfar beyond the cutting process.Modern production requiresefficient, seamless andergonomic processes from thestore to the saw and on to thefinished product. In this age ofdigitalisation, the key tosuccess is increasingly thesoftware.HOLZMA recognised this at
an early stage and today offerstwo of the most importantsoftware solutions for cuttingpanel-shaped wood and plasticmaterials: its machine controlsoftware CADmatic and theHOLZMA optimisation

myths surrounding the use of PUR and Airforce technologies, especially with regard to safety whilst, at the same time, re-inforcing the long term benefits of quality and reliability.Could the move towards PUR and Airforce technologies spell
the end for EVA?Zero Glue Line technologies, like most new processes, are
generally surrounded by mystique. At Biesse it is recognised thatit would be good to remove that mystery and bring togetherindustry experts in tape, glue, board and, of course, the rightmachines to provide an understanding of how a perfect edge canbe achieved – hence the reason for staging these eventsFrom conventional edge-banding with a primer to 100 per cent
polymer functional layers, with the AirForce system there are noglue lines and, therefore, no problems should arise.Among the features associated with this process are:
• Raukantex edge-banding for all processing technologies(adhesive application, hot air, laser, NIR or plasma technology).
• Edge-banding in all standard dimensions.• Over 1,200 colours and decorative designs in over8,000 variants available from stock in small quantities.• For bespoke requirements, small production volumesare available. An increasing number of furniture manufacturers are
already benefiting from the use of PUR hot-meltadhesives.At these workshops visitors learnt more about how to
combine outstanding edge design with long-lastingbond security.Key features included:
• Unmatched moisture resistance.• Highest heat resistance (up to 150 deg C).• Ultimate bond strength on all common edge materials.• Low application weight for a very thin glue line.• Clean running for ready-to-sell surfaces.
Air Force System, which is available on all Biesse edge-banders isbased on the physical principle of convection. By using acompressed hot air system, the edge bonds perfectly with the panelto which it is being attached.
