January 2017
Happy New Year!!! 2017 is here already, I guess the
older we get the year flies by with a blink of an eye.
I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and
Santa was good to you!
It was great to see the turnout for the tree trimming and hay ride in De-
cember. I know the children really enjoyed the ride.
I was not able to make it but I saw that the turn out for breakfast with
Santa had a tremendous turnout. Thanks to all that made this possible.
The BRYC Commodores ball is the 7th of January hope to see you there.
It’s always a good time. If you are unable to make it to the ball, stop at
BRYC from 4-6:30 for a cocktail.
The following weekend there will be some of us going to Chesapeake
Commodores Club in OC for their ball and a full weekend of fun. After
that it is back to going to other Yacht Club Balls and supporting those
clubs.
Officers and committee chairs are working hard to make sure that
BRYC has a great year and make sure that everyone has fun. Before
you know it boats will be back in the water.
I wish everyone a very Happy, Heathy and Prosperous New Year!!
See you around the club,
Commodore Wade

Vice Commodore Chris Sanford
January 2017
Welcome to 2017! Debbie and I hope you had a great
Christmas and we wish you all a Happy New Year! I am
looking forward to a great 2017.
There is already a positive feeling around the club and we are beginning to talk
about some great upgrades. I am not going to spoil any surprises but I think
we are finally going to be able to repair some of those things that members
have been asking about for some time now.
We have several new faces on our committees and they are eager to jump in
and start pulling things together. It is so great to have new members stepping
in to help. The new views and ideas are the things that make the club come
together.
I hope that everyone enjoyed the tree trimming party and hay rides. A fun time
was had by all. Greg Ensor brought the tractor and rode everyone around the
neighborhood singing Christmas Songs and trying to stay warm. The Saturday
breakfast the kids had with Santa was a huge success. Here is a big thank you
to everyone who made both the tree trimming party and the breakfast with
Santa happen.
Are you ready to begin the pool league and corn hole tournaments? Both of
these activities are starting up again. The leagues begin on January 5 th and
will be held every week. There are sign-up sheets on the board at the club. You
could also contact Rear Commodore Ron Los or Captain Jim Otte to sign up.
This is a great way to spend those cold winter weeks with members of BRYC.
Before you know it slip assignment day will be here and we will all be working
on boats again.
~V/C Chris

January 2017
I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas season.
The New Year is here and before you know it spring will be here too. The club cruises are beginning to take shape. I’m going to keep you in suspense for another month or so regarding many of the details. However, I can tell you about some of the dates at this time. There are no surprises here. If you’ve been a member of the club for any length of time, you probably could have guessed many of them correctly on your own. The major cruises are on the club calendar which you should receive in your mem-bership renewal package.
You can begin planning for two of our cruises now. Our first official cruise of the year is the land cruise. It will be on April 1 (seriously). We will travel by bus to visit some of our friends at their clubs.
The Vacation Cruise is a little way off but you might want to put it on your calendar now. The cruise will be from July 29 to August 6. It looks like we’ll be cruising down the bay. Don’t forget to reserve the time off from work.
I am still interested in hearing your input. There's always time to make adjustments for good new ideas. We may add smaller cruises too. Talk to me!

Greetings from the
BRYC Town Crier
I would like to welcome all of the members who have recently joined Bush River Yacht Club. I try to keep our members informed of the happenings around the club and provide other pertinent information that the Officers and the members who chair our Committees request that I send to the
membership via E-Mail. These messages often contain information that does not appear in our monthly Burgee publication or on the BRYC website. If you are not receiving these periodic E-Mail messages from me, I need your current E-Mail address so I can keep you informed as well. Therefore, please send me a message containing your name, the name of your First Mate if applicable and your current E-Mail ad-dress and I will add you to my BRYC list. My email address is [email protected].

Sea Scout Skipper’s Corner January 2017 Skipper Barbara Lash
Hello to all and Happy New Year! Sea Scout Ship 1808 would like to thank all who donated to our Toys for Tots toy drive. Our Ship, combined with Ship 361, collected two car loads of toys! The majority of the toys were delivered to Toys for Tots. However, do-nations continued to be received after the collection deadline and so we were also able to make a donation to S.A.R.C. and Harford Family House. What a blessing this was for many children this Christmas Season. Ship 1808 has started to plan their calendar for 2017 and we have some excit-ing plans on the horizon. Our meetings will continue to be held on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 in the Sea Scout room resuming January 9. Our training room is progressing nicely. We have had many donations of equip-ment and supplies. We will soon begin painting the room and truly making it our own. Feel free to stop by and see how what are doing. For more information about Sea Scouts go to seascout.org or for information about Sea Scout Ship 1808 con-tact Skipper Barbara Lash at 443.417.5783 or [email protected]. Winter brings unique opportunities for Sea Scouts. Although it is cold outside and usually too dark during our meetings to be out on the boats, we continue our program by increasing our skill level through training courses and work-ing on requirements for rank advancement. Many have asked how they can help the Ship. Donations of time are greatly appreciated. Whether it is help-ing to paint, replace ceiling or floor tiles in the Sea Scout room, or taking youth out on boats in the spring, all are welcome. One of the requirements of the Boy Scout of America is that any adult working with a youth is required to have Youth Protection Training. This is an online course and takes 30 – 45 minutes of your time. The link for the training is http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx Please take a few minutes of your time and complete this training so that we all can assure the safety of the youth we serve. When you finish the training, please email or drop off a copy of your completion certificate so the Ship will have a record for upcoming events in 2017. We are in need of adults to be on our fundraising committee, if you are interested contact Skipper Lash. The Ship will be traveling to the Naval Academy in January to participate in the 2017 Navy Jamboree with the Naval Academy Eagle Scout Association. This is always a fun event and allows our youth to see one of the options a Sea Scout has for higher education
16
Sea Scout Skipper’s Corner Continued…...
Keep your eye out for additional upcoming events. The Ship will be collect-ing canned goods for local food pantries and churches in the near future. We will be placing a box in the club like we did for the toy collection. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Wish List Ship t-shirts Dingy with or without motor to be used as a chase boat during our events on the water Charts and Navigation tools Gift cards to purchase equipment and supplies Yours in Sea Scouting, Skipper Barbara Lash

Slip Assignments
I would like to wish all our members a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I am looking forward to another great year at BRYC and hoping for a successful year with the assignment and usage of our boat slips. I encourage all members, especially new members, to read the slip assignment news and rules which will be published each month prior to Slip Assignment Day in order to help you better understand just what will be taking place on that day. Of course, feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Slip Assignment Day is March 26, 2017. Bills will be sent out by January 30th. Rates for 2017 are the same as 2016 (as of the time this article was published):
Slips: $20.00 per slip foot
Bulkhead: $300.00 Mud Slip: $220.00
Dinghy: $50.00 Trailer: $200.00
Here are some particular items of interest. The complete rules for slip assign-ment are included in this Burgee. The rules for dinghy rack assignment and trail-er parking sites are the same as for slips and are not included in order to con-serve space. All permanent slip, dinghy, and trailer slip holders should be sure to get their check to me by the March 5th cutoff date or your slip/dinghy/trailer slip will be made available for reassignment. Remember, in order to be paid on time, I MUST receive the payment by the end of the day, Sunday, March 5th. Therefore, if you mail the check, make sure you allow enough time to meet the deadline. Postmark date DOES NOT constitute receipt of payment. If you wait to mail your check just a few days before cutoff, you are taking a chance it will not be received on time and therefore will be late. In fairness to all the members who pay on time and in accordance with Slip As-signment Rules, this deadline will be strictly enforced without exception. If you already had or were assigned any type of slip on Slip Assignment Day 2016 and do not receive a bill by the end of January, give me a call at 410-707-8673 or email: [email protected]. Any slip holder that received any type of slip after Slip Assignment Day 2016 re-ceived a temporary slip and will not receive a bill. If you want to receive a perma-nent slip you must fill out a slip request form and be present on Slip Assignment Day to pick a permanent slip.
18
Slip Assignment Continued….
If you are unable to be present on Slip Assignment Day, you can appoint a proxy to act on your behalf. Be sure to put this in writing and get it to me before Slip As-signment Day. Remember to fill out a slip assignment request form if you are a new member receiving a temporary slip after last year’s Slip Assignment Day, want to change slips, want a dinghy storage slot, or want a trailer parking site. You can obtain a request form from the bulletin board outside the kitchen and put the completed form in the envelope provided, OR you can email me and I will send you an elec-tronic version. Your boat MUST fit in the slip you select. This includes bow pulpit, swim plat-form and allowances for free space between your boat and the pier. Fees for a new slip, an upgrade to a bigger slip, dinghy rack, or trailer parking site are payable on Slip Assignment Day, so be sure to bring your checkbook. Slips: Any current slip holder wishing to move from their current slip must fill out a slip request form and be present on Slip Assignment Day. Please read Article 24 of the Slip Assignment Rules (published in this Burgee) CAREFULLY and make sure your insurance is current and a certificate of insurance is submitted to BRYC.
Dinghies: Any current dinghy rack holder wishing to move from their current rack must fill out a dinghy rack request form and be present on Slip Assignment Day. Trailers: Trailered boats require the same $300,000 insurance as water slips. Any regular member wishing trailer storage must fill out a trailer request form and be present on Slip Assignment Day. There are a limited number of spaces available, which will be filled on a seniority basis, and when they are gone, they are gone. Even if you don't intend to change slips or are not a slip holder, come to the Slip As-signment Day activities on March 26th. It's always a good time and a great way to kickoff the season.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: SLIP PAYMENT CUT OFF – MARCH 5th
SLIP ASSIGNMENT DAY – MARCH 26TH
I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Slip Assignment Day.
Slip Assignment Chairman

Slip Assignment Rules:
The following rules will be adhered to for Slip Assignments:
1. Invoices for slip rental will be mailed to all previous slip assignees
prior to January 30th.
2. Receipt for slip rental will be returned if stamped, self-addressed en-
velope is enclosed with payment.
3. All slip fees must be paid prior to the slip cut-off date as posted in the
club calendar. Any additional fees (dinghy, trailer, extra electric, second
slips) shall be paid on Slip Assignment Day. All new slip holders shall
pay their fees on Slip Assignment Day. Failure to pay for any of your
slip fees at this time will result in your slip(s) becoming available for
reassignment immediately.
4. Current members wishing to upgrade their membership status to
REGULAR so that they may acquire a slip must do so by the February
15th dues cut-off date. No membership upgrades will be permitted from
February 15th through slip assignment day.
5. Failure of not receiving a bill for slip rental does not constitute
grounds for voiding slip cut-off date.
6. All requests for slips shall be in writing, membership application
does not constitute a request for a slip.
7. All slip rentals not renewed by the cut-off date will be avail-able for
reassignment.
8. All slips available for reassignment will be posted after slip cut-off
date on fleet information board (in bar).
9. A member must be in good standing on slip cut-off date to retain slip.
10. The failure to receive a bill for membership dues does not relieve
the member of the responsibility of maintaining his membership in
good standing.

Slip Assignment Rules Continued…
11. Slips will only be assigned on slip assignment day. Bids for a partic-
ular slip may be in writing or in person during the hours of 1400-1600
and assignment thereafter. After this assignment, future assignments
will be on a temporary basis and only for the current boating season.
12. Requests for reassignment of a slip will be made in writing prior to
slip assignment day, or in person on slip assignment day, no second
party requests will be honored unless so requested in writing.
13. Slips will be assigned on slip assignment day in order of member-
ship seniority. Seniority is defined by contiguous membership, and only
Regular, Distinguished Life, Life, or Senior members accrue slip sen-
iority. (See Constitution Article VII - Membership - Sec. 11) (This rule
does not apply to any permanent slips assigned prior to April 3, 1992.)
14. Slips, which become vacant as the result of a new assignment, will
be reassigned on slip assignment day. (It is suggested that members de-
siring a change in slip assignment be present on slip assignment day to
request reassignment should a desired slip become vacant.)
15. A request for a 2nd slip, in water or trailer slip must be in writing to
the Slip Assignment Chairman prior to slip assignment day.
16. The decision to assign a slip to members requesting the same slip
and with the same seniority will be decided by a disinterested 3rd party
drawing the name from a hat.
17. Slip must be vacated within one week of sale of boat to a non-
member. Slip assignee is responsible for the vacating of slip by new
owner. Any member that sells their boat or downgrades their member-
ship status from Regular member who holds a slip AFTER slip assign-
ment day will not be entitled to any refund for their slip fees or the dif-
ference in their membership fee.
18. Once a slip has been assigned on slip assignment day, no one may
claim slip for any reason.
19. Slip assignment chairman or Rear Commodore may temporarily
assign vacant slips.
21
Slip Assignment Rules Continued…
20. Voluntary exchange of slips between two members in good standing will be
permitted on approval of the slip assignment chairman for one season only,
then both slips will revert back to the original assignee.
21. A member, who is delinquent of dues, will vacate slip within twenty-four
(24) hours.
22. No half-year slip rental will be accepted unless assignment is after July
30th
23. Assignments of dinghy storage will be by seniority, with previous assignees
maintaining their dinghy slip and in accordance to the Dinghy Rack Assign-
ment Rules, which are consistent with the procedures followed for regular slip
assignment. (A dinghy slip is not considered a second slip.)
24. Each slip holder shall provide Bush River Yacht Club annually, a Certifi-
cate of Insurance, showing bodily injury and property damage liability insur-
ance in the amount of $300,000 per occurrence. This Certificate is to be re-
turned with each years slip fees and/or no later than slip assignment day. Those
not providing a Certificate of Insurance at slip assignment day will be required
to comply prior to using slip. Bush River Yacht Club shall be named as Holder
of Certificate on the policy. Those not providing a Certificate of Insurance will
not be allowed to occupy a slip or trailer site until such a certificate is provided.
** It is the slip holder's responsibility to maintain current insurance. If
insurance lapses, your boat will be towed at your expense. **
25. No permanent slip assignment will be permitted after April 3, 1992 allow-
ing a boat to occupy a slip where the boat, bow pulpit to stern end of the swim
platform protrudes beyond the outer most piling of the slip. A boat may be as-
signed to a slip against this rule only on a temporary basis and may only be
done so after slip assignment. Any boat given this temporary assignment, to an
incorrect size slip, must be moved within seven (7) days, when a correct size
slip becomes available. If a member purchases a boat after slip assignment day
that requires a larger slip than the member currently holds, the member is re-
quired to notify, in writing, the Board of Governors prior to the arrival of the
new vessel. If a slip of the correct size is available, the owner will be re-
quired to put the new vessel in the temporary slip of the correct size on a tem-
porary basis. If no slip of the correct size is available, the owner will be permit-
ted to keep the boat in his slip of the incorrect size until a correct temporary
slip becomes available, where upon the boat must be moved from the perma-
nent slip of the incorrect size to the correct size temporary slip.
