RAISE UR PAW.

R.U.P

Uniting the world one paw at a time.

Page 10: January 2014

Growing up with a father who was President of an SPCA opened my

eyes to truly see this world of ours. It showed me the cruelty and abuse that some individuals of society inflicted on innocent animals, and how so many violate animal rights/welfare, including the Government as well. It was the most horrific and terrifying experience that I had ever encountered. As I matured, I began to follow further in my father’s footsteps – to erase that whole old theory out of my mind that we, as humans are the “Superior Species” and transform that into making myself part of the “Compassionate Species” to be fully involved in making this world of ours a better place for not only humanity, but for innocent animals as well.... a journey that I am so honoured to take.

Being highly active in animal advocacy and activism, I embarked on gaining more insight on the issues at hand – developing further knowledge and also reaching others in ways of donating my time and familiarity. It was then that I recognized just how much help and support these matters were in desperate need of – and so I began brainstorming strategies and methods that would help increase my involvement in the fight for animal protection, rights and welfare.

In February of 2012, the idea of RAISE UR PAW materialized – a cause that not only raised awareness against animal abuse/cruelty, or to promote animal rights and welfare – but it would also be a foundation in which gives

compassionate and caring people something that they could get involved with; to encourage, empower and educate society to join in

lifting up their voices and be part of the good fight for animals worldwide.

“Raise Ur Paw High for the whole World to see – Stand up and speak

out for animals and a compassionate Humanity!”

My vision became a reality – A mission to make a positive impact on this world of ours, seeking improvements in animal

care and the reduction of animal suffering – to bring upon passage and implementation of laws and regulations to protect and

uphold the rights of animals around the world. RAISE UR PAW is about treating animals with respect and kindness, spreading the word to increase

Page 11: January 2014

society’s involvement in aiding our innocent and fighting against the issues that are jeopardizing animal lives.

We have created a support foundation using not only social networking, but also in our community, gaining more voices and therefore more ears listening to our voices and hearing the truth of what animals are going through and what some experience on a daily basis. We are also hoping that our voices will fall upon the ears of Government and Media as well – considering that we all play an important role in saving the lives of animals, that it’s our voices that can make the difference, change laws, take action and be part of taking on our responsibility for those innocent lives that have been entrusted to us. To UNITE for the GOOD FIGHT.

“The Greatness of a Nation and its Moral Progress can be judged by the way its

Animals are treated!” – Gandhi Our cause RAISE UR PAW stands dedicated and determined to show the greatness of our nation – the compassionate side, where humanity comes together to speak out for the voiceless and make a difference to create a better world that we can pass down to our future generations. Because without our voices, innocent animals don’t have a chance – their pleas and cries won’t be heard and continued to be ignored.

We trust that many will be part of our cause, of our vision – that society will rise above and bring kindness back to humankind. For we cannot wait another day to go by before doing something to save animals – for each day that passes more will suffer through pain and torture, to have their rights/welfare violated, many will even die. It is today that we need to make a stand – for the WORLD to RAISE UR PAW.

Page 15: January 2014

Nikita had more practical plans for her life as she saw modelling as more of a side interest. The tragic death of her older brother George almost dismayed her from modelling completely. It wasn’t until her first achievement as the 2011 winner of the Miss CSCS (Canadian Sports Compact Series) competition that she decided to take modelling seriously and began to receive opportunities for photo shoots and live appearances. This resurgence leads her to the management talents of Travis "TL" Chatman (TLC Productionz) who has taken on the role of guiding Nikita’s career to its full potential. Nikita’s main focus is to be a positive role model to young girls with similar ambitions by teaching them that success doesn’t have to come at the price of personal compromise. A bright future lies ahead as Nikita plans to expand her career by excelling in all aspects of entertainment. A natural talent for drama has her ripe for television and cinema roles. Nikita Pedro is sure to leave an indelible mark on the world of modelling and the world at large. Nikita has always worked extremely hard because nothing in her life was ever given to her. She is a true fighter and will fight for the things she believes in until the end. Nikita would like to thank her friends, family and fans for the love and support that they have given her thus far. Nikita is eternally grateful for all the great people she has in her life. Nikita will continue to apply the 3 C’s of life, which are Choice, Chance and Change because she believes that, “You must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change.”

A MAKE OVER WITH NADIA RAMPERTAB

Page 21: January 2014

!! Nadia Rampertab, is a Skin therapist, Freelance Makeup Artist, Founder of a Non for profit organization, model and is on her way becoming a motivational speaker for students with disabilities.

Growing up Nadia loved lifting other spirits by making them feel great about themselves. So what better industry to pursue then the beauty industry.

Her journey as a Skin Therapist and Freelance Makeup Artist began 5 years ago. Going into her second year on becoming a Skin Therapist at Centennial College, Nadia got hired onto Canada's Favorite Urban Oasis Spa. Now you're probably wondering is that even allowed? Don't worry she was too. Let's just say her skill and knowledge spoke for itself. Getting hired was a stepping stone and inspiration. It showed that you don't necessary have to wait to graduate to begin your career and that anything is possible. You will never know until you try!

Makeup has been something that scared Nadia believe it or not. It's was a world of fear she dove right into without any regrets. After hours upon hours of practising and educating herself her love grew stronger and stronger which turned into today one of her passion that she can't live without. Woman should not wear makeup because it makes them look pretty. They should wear it to add to their natural beauty that comes from within.

I’M OUT TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD.”

Page 22: January 2014

As a Makeup Artist you have your lows just like any career for the most part before you rise. So for those who are becoming Makeup Artist please keep that in mind. Nadia has been featured on numerous articles and talks shows such as Know it All showcasing on Rogers Television.

The hurdle in life that Nadia had to overcome and later became my drive was being stamped with a learning disabilities at the age of 6. Struggling day in and day out questioning myself at such a young age am I normal? Why? Because children are simply terrible. As children we don't understand much and choose to be critics, taunt and tease those who aren't consider normal to us. As Nadia got older she learned her strengths and weakness and turned her weakness into my strengths. But not all make it that far or have the ability to do so. And that's why I'm on my way to becoming a motivational speaker for students with disabilities.

In 2012, Nadia wanted to make a difference in the harsh world we live in and what better way in doing so then using her passion. Annual Toast for the cure was born which is a non for profit organization in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Why the Canadian Cancer Society? A lady who has never met her Grandfather, having her Aunt passed away when she was 5 and now having to deal with the grief of her second grandfather battling prostate cancer, It’s a dead giveaway that the Canadian Cancer Society plays a big role in her heart. By teaming up with the Canadian Cancer Society, She doesn’t just see this as a donation, but an investment for the future of happier families and healthier human beings. It means the world to her to know that with people’s help another person’s life can potentially be saved.

“Sometimes I wish I could tone down the fire in my voice that aggravates those who what to hear a demure Indian princess. Could I write poetry without politics? And why do I not dress more traditionally? At times I wish I could Live and let live, tolerate the moral majority, accept everybody and, as some have chided, understand that we mean well… I wish i could be Happy just being nice, being with my nice friends talking about nice things. If only I did not expect so much from others or from myself. Maybe I could be a Yuppie or even an ordinary Canadian. [[But I was born asking and with eyes that never close. The real wishing I do entails the transformation of people and society. –Emma Larocque

Page 24: January 2014

I couldn’t put it better myself. I’ve realized that being an activist, for the most

part means challenging norms, being different, pointing out issues which are otherwise normalized and being criticized for it. Before I continue writing this piece I would like to acknowledge that I write this piece from a perspective of privilege. What I mean by this is, I have shelter, I have clothing, I have food, I am not being forced to work under horrible conditions and my life is for the most part comfortable. This piece is therefore not to be confused and interpreted as an activist complaining but rather an individual sharing her struggle so that others who may relate know that they are not alone. I have seen many turn their back on their individuality or resistant stance because they were rejected by friends, family and society as a whole, I hope this piece can help those realize that their resistance is important and appreciated.

I personally cannot watch a movie without a critical eye, my perspective has changed and I can no longer watch anything care free without being able to point out the racism, or sexism or some form of marginalization. I must admit this can sometimes be a pain and like Emma sometimes I too wish that I could be normal, I wish that I could just listen to songs without thinking “what in the hell is he/she talking about ” or watch a movie without thinking “ seriously, this is so stereotypical”, but that’s just not who I am. Many of us do this without even realizing it. It have become common knowledge that in many horror movies the coloured person always seems to die first, or that the girl always needs saving from a masculine hero, or that every single Disney movie is either sexist or racist, or both. It’s become a joke to many of us but what we don’t realize is that we are all being activist and are rebels for being able to pick this out.

However what I’ve realized is many of us choose not to point out these indiscretions in fear of being “that annoying friend to criticizes everything” trust me I feel it all the time. We bite our tongues as Emma says “tone down that fire” and hold in our feelings in fear of aggravating others. We crave to be normal. Well to this I say BEING NORMAL SUCKS. I’ve decided that there is absolutely nothing I can do about my critical eye, and if you’re going to be friends with me you better be ready to see all the inequalities this world has in it. I will call out the jungle book for having a gorilla who has the accent of a southern black man and sings about wanting to be real human. I will call out the way majority of shows and movies hardly have a coloured hero, or furthermore a female or homosexual hero. I will continue to do these things because this is who I am. I will not sit quietly as we continue to normalized these ideas that coloured people are less intelligent or weaker which is why they always die first in the horror movie, I will not sit back and ignore the women who are astronauts, professors, doctors and instead internalized the perceptions in the media which demonstrate them as weak, over

Page 25: January 2014

sexualized and in desperate search of a good man. I will not tolerate the moral majority because I believe that the moral majority is corrupt. We are all happy to act like everything is perfect and ignore the corruption which is occurring on a daily basis, I mean ignorance is bliss right? But I am not happy with this. It is not okay that black men get pulled over because they are thought to be more likely to demonstrate criminality. It is not right that rich white children come to the hood and go around asking every coloured person if they have drugs because we are seen to all be drug dealers. It is not right hen women still get paid 75 cents to every dollar a man makes for the same exact job, it is not fair that people ask questions like “what do aboriginals complain for, they don’t even pay taxes” and I could continue to go on with all the things which are not fair for pages. So call me what you want, I cannot be your quiet, Indian princess, I cannot act like I weak so you can feel powerful, I will not bite my tongue so it seems like everything is okay, I will not hide my intelligence. I cannot be happy just because marginalized people are more or less tolerated in this society, being tolerated insist enough. Its not enough that you HAVE to hire a coloured person to met a quota the government should put in place, you should WANT to hire a coloured person because you have no preconceived notions about them and they have great qualifications. . this is so me. I could not think of a better way to word this. Everyone is always like relax Talisha it’s not that serious, but it to me it is. My critical stance is a part of me and i can’t turn it off .People always say “you’re a radical Talisha.”All I really am is a person who believes in equality. A person who believes we are all equally humans regardless of skin colour, religion, gender or culture and I can’t turn off when I want to believe in equality. But apparently wanting equality is a trait which is frowned upon in our society. If that's what radical means then yes I guess I am radical! I am who I am and I will continue to critique the dominant ideologies and I don’t care if people don’t like it.

I’m different and I love it.
