Tips-‘N-Tricks

Write-up Provided by MCC Member Henri Fusilier

As a car guy that likes turnin’ wrenches I am always alert to things that will make my time on

the dolly more enjoyable. One of the most annoying and frustrating things I encounter is rusty

frozen nuts and bolts. If you have ever worked on an old car you know how much one of the

buggers can test your patience, make you cuss like a sailor and add truth to the statement “I

have blood, sweat and tears in that car.” My wife will also tell you that they are also the

source of extra $$$ invested in my classics.

Not long ago I came across this post on the Antique Chrysler web site that I frequent. I have

tried it and it does seem to work better than the commercial products I have in my garage and

I thought I would share it with you.

Machinist's Workshop magazine recently published some information on various penetrating

oils that I found very interesting. You might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested

penetrates for 'break out' torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a

subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to

remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen*

No Oil used ................... 516 pounds

WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds

PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...............127 pounds

Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds

ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and

acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.

Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price of the

popular commercial brands.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that the ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF

and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix.

*ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid

Got the Bug to Buy a Collector Car? Write-up and photos provided by MCC member Tom Phillips

The 2013 collector car auction schedule is well underway with

two large and well known auctions scheduled in January. Mecum

Muscle Cars & More has their first 2013 event scheduled in

Kissimmee, Florida for January 18-27 and Barrett-Jackson has

their first event of the new year scheduled in Scottsdale, Arizona

for January 13-20. Both are great events where thousands of

collector vehicles will be sold. Even if you don't plan to buy or

sell a collector car, these are two great events to attend even if

you go just to see lots of remarkable cars. You might even want

to add a day or two for a winter vacation. With that, your better

half might just want to tag along. The complete Mecum and

Barrett-Jackson 2013 schedules can be found on their web sites.

If this is not enough all their auctions can also be seen from the

comfort of your man cave on your big screen TV where even

from there you can bid on your favorite collector cars.

Shown below are photos taken at the Mecum Auction in Dallas, Texas
