Advisement for the 2013-2014 school year is fast approaching for current students in grades 9, 10, 11 and incoming 9th grade students. A letter will be sent home informing parents of the time and date of their appointment. An Advisor-Advisee Parent/Guardian conference is required to finalize the student registration process. Special Note to All Millard West Families From: Greg Tiemann, Principal

As parents and students make course selections during registration/advisement, please know that the class schedule at the beginning of the school year is based upon this process. The registration process for your student needs to be thoughtfully done and accepted as final. Because of staffing and space, the school will need to hold to its practice of not allowing changes in a student’s schedule for the upcoming year. Parents, students and the school must consider the spring registration process as being one of a near contractual agreement. Therefore, class schedules are not subject to change in terms of courses selected or class periods scheduled. Work schedules, jobs, open campus privileges, or before and after school responsibilities must be worked around the class schedule provided at the beginning of the year. Changing schedules for things such as transportation, work schedules, or to move a class to another period or to a different teacher causes unbalanced class loads for both other students and teaching staff. Changes will only be made if one of the following condi-tions exists: health problems, computer error, misplacement, failing prerequisites, or incomplete graduation requirements. Thank you for your assistance and understanding of the constraints the school is under.

MULTICULTURAL FAIR The annual Multicultural Fair will be held Friday evening, January 11th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Students, parents and basketball fans are invited to come sample foods, listen to music and observe customs from other countries. Admittance is $5 which includes four food samples and international entertainment. Tickets sold at the door - to the left of the Millard West lobby. Lots of fun!!

MOCK JOB INTERVIEW VOLUNTEERS Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year. Each semester, the Millard West Oral Communications students (those in Speech, Debate or Forensics) go through a Mock Job Interview. Students apply for part-time jobs and have a one-on-one interview with a business professional from the community. We are always actively looking for new Mock Job Interview Volunteers. A Blood Donation is a gift that doesn't cost a thing, but gives hope to patients in need: - We recently had a staff member receive 60 bags of plasma - Another teacher received 8 units and her daughter over 20

Advanced Placement And Dual Enrollment Information Night

What: Information on Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment Programs

When: Tuesday, January 15 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Where: Millard West Auditorium

For Whom: Parents and Students interested in knowing more about these two important programs

We will provide information about each Advanced Placement Course that is offered. Teachers from many of these classes will be present to share information about expectations, curriculum and testing. They will also be available to answer questions. We will give an overview of qualifications for enrollment and success in these important college bound courses. It is recommended that all four-year college-bound students enroll in at least one Advanced Placement Course. AP courses help students to be better prepared for college and might help a student to enter college having already earned college credits. We will also give information on AP testing: the benefits, the costs and the timelines. Information will also be provided about UNO’s Dual Enrollment program including benefits, costs and timelines. We encourage any interested parent and student to come to this infor-mation session to find out more about these worthwhile programs.

Orchestra News

Big Trip in 2013-2014

We begin the New Year with energy and early planning for our big trip next year. Thank you for your feedback from our parent surveys. If you have not yet completed a response sheet, please do so this month.

Upcoming Events

January 11 6-7:30 PM Multi- Cultural Fair Many of our Orchestra students will be performing in small ensembles, such as Eclectics, Chamber Orchestra, and quartets.

January 28 All Millard Orchestra Festival at North The First Period Orchestra students (Symphony) will rehearse in the morning. The 9th graders (Philharmonic) will rehearse in the early afternoon. All will perform for the 7PM concert at North.

February 5 3:30 PM Concerto Competition Students in Symphony (First Period) are eligible to audition for a concerto performance with the Orchestra on our April Concert. Students should check with Mrs. Ritchie for details.

Dual Enrollment Opportunities Millard West 2012-2013

Students taking specified Advanced Placement Courses are given the opportunity to dual enroll for college credit as well as high school credit. Currently Millard Public Schools is working with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. UNO determines which of Millard’s courses align with their college curriculum and which of Millard’s teachers qualify as adjunct professors. Only those courses and teachers approved by UNO offer the option of dual enrollment credit. Students must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or greater in order to qualify for dual enrollment credit. Students must also sign up for dual enrollment credit concurrently with enrollment in the corresponding Millard course. Students will not be allowed to retroactively pay for dual enrollment credit. Enrollment requirements are set by UNO and may be changed by them prior to any registration period. Students will earn credit from UNO and will need to have a transcript from UNO sent to the university they plan on attending. As with all transfer credit, the attending universities decide if and how they accept the transfer credit from UNO. It is recommended that students call the attending college and ask about the acceptance of the specific transfer credit before enrolling in the dual enrollment course. If a student is enrolling in a science or math program, the attending university will generally not accept dual enrollment credit in science and math. Most dual enrollment credits will transfer as general required courses rather than as major-specific course work. Students should call the admission’s office at the university they are planning on attending to check for specific information on transfer credit acceptance. All Advanced Placement Courses offer Advanced Placement Testing through the College Board each spring. All students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the corresponding AP exams. Students may qualify for college credit depending on the grade they earn on the exam(s) and the university they are attending. A UNO representative will visit the dual enrollment courses two weeks prior to the registration deadline. Students are then to turn in their registrations to the Millard West Administration Office within the two week window. The cost for each course, each semester will be $250 whether it is for a three-credit, four-credit, or five-credit class. Millard West will send the registrations to UNO. Each parent/student will receive a bill from the University and will pay UNO directly. No money should be given to Millard West. The $250 fee is a significant reduction in the normal tuition for a UNO class. UNO dual-enrolled students are required to take the AP test in May; however, UNO will pay for the AP exam costs (an $89 cost per exam in the spring of 2013) in the dual-enrolled subject. By turning in the enrollment forms, the parent/student is agreeing to a financial obligation and agreement with UNO. All of UNO’s policies apply. Students must pass the dual enrollment course with a grade of C or better to earn college credit. The grading scale will be the same as for all Millard classes. Grade weighting for advanced placement classes is for Millard’s GPA purposes only and does not apply to the UNO grade report. DECA NEWS

Thank you to everyone for participating in Stop the Texts, Stop the Wrecks. DECA members Emily

Sutera, Abby Barna and Nicole Chonis collected 1,700 signatures of people taking the pledge.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the JDRF staff vs. student basketball game. $3,415 was raised for Juvenile Diabetes. Zach Houfek, Katie Alexander and Trent Johnson were the organizers of the event.

DECA members lead the Open Door Mission Community Service Campaign at Millard West. Over 1,800 cans of food and 800 rolls of toilet paper were collected. Jessie Berens, Presleigh Keplinger and Azure Gonzales organized the events.

Thank you to everyone participating in the collection of sporting equipment for Boy’s and Girls club. Two truckloads full of equipment were collected for Omaha youth. Erin Burling, Sarah Whitham and Jenna Kruntorad organized the event.

The DECA Junior Invite was held at Omaha Burke on December 1st. The winners were: Spencer Lau/Max Veller Hospitality Team 5th place Morgan Coil/Danny Sandoz Travel and Tourism Team 6th place Morgan Coil/Spencer Lau/Max Veller/Katelyn Strudthoff Quiz Bowl 1st place

DECA has been preparing for District and State Competition. The Marketing I and II classes held internal class competitions to determine the qualifiers for Districts and State. Each student was given an econom-ics and specialty test. This year we have a chapter size of 188 students. One hundred twenty students qualified to attend District competition at Millard South on January 26, 2013 and State DECA competition on March 14-16, 2013 at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln. Congratulations to all qualifiers!

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE A BUSINESS CLASS

Business is the number one major course of study for high school graduates. According to the 2008 Millard post-graduate survey, students taking business ethics/

business classes was the second most important item in helping students for employ-ment.

Business Administration is the most popular major of business degrees. Among the top 10 Business majors they include: Business Management, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources and International/Global Business. Of 1,292,000 Bachelor degrees earned in 2008, the largest number of degrees belonged to business

(281,000). Among Master degrees, business is the second most popular major.

DECA PROVIDES OVER $300,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

DECA's scholarship program provides over $300,000 in scholarships at the Inter-national Career Development Conference (ICDC) each year. Many corporate partners of DECA provide scholarships through the DECA Scholarship Program. DECA Inc. administers the program based on guidelines set by the donor. DECA

scholarships are strictly merit based. Millard West students must be enrolled in Marketing I, II or Fashion Marketing and DECA to be eligible for scholarships.

Examples of companies or organizations that partner with DECA to provide scholarships to DECA members include:

The Don DeBolt scholarship provides two (2) $2,000 scholarships, awarded to DECA members who have an interest in pursuing franchising and entrepreneurship course of study.

Finish Line provides fifteen (15) $1,000 scholarships awarded to DECA/Collegiate DECA members who are Finish Line associates.

Marriott International provides six (6) $1,500 scholarships to DECA members who have hospitality experience or interest.

NAPA provides nine (9) $1,000 scholarships awarded to DECA/Collegiate DECA members who are NAPA associates or have an interest in careers in the automotive industry.

Otis Spunkmeyer provides ten (10) $1,000 scholarships awarded to DECA members who work in their school stores and sell Otis Spunkmeyer products.

Walgreens provides four (4) $1,000 scholarships awarded to DECA members who can show evidence of DECA activities, leadership ability, community involvement.

Harry Applegate Scholarship Program - The Harry Applegate Scholarship Program is a scholarship fund that corporate supporters contribute to, but the scholarship is actually in the company's name. Scholarships are awarded based on DECA involvement, leadership ability, community service and grades.

Nebraska DECA - Nebraska DECA provides over $10,000 in scholarships for students involved in Marketing or DECA.

MILLARD WEST LIBRARY We are sure that many of our avid student readers will be happy to know that there are hundreds of new books in the library! We have voracious readers at West, both students and staff. That’s what makes it exciting for the library staff! Students can find the new Millard Reads list on the library website link.

We’re also very big on technology, and enjoy helping students through the intricacies of software and hardware use. It is a very good idea for all students to invest in a flash drive for project storage. As always, we’re asking students to save everything in two places, and we’re trying to remember to follow our own advice.

ATHLETICS FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR All students and parents are reminded that in order to participate in interscholastic athletics, all students must do the following:

1. The Nebraska State Athletic Association has two check points for eligibility to participate in interscholas-tic athletics. The checkpoints are in January and August. The rules state that a student must pass a minimum of 20 credits during the prior two terms, i.e. a student participating in a winter or spring sport must have passed a minimum of 20 credit hours from August through December. Millard West students must be enrolled in a minimum of two classes in each nine week term and we strongly recom-mend a minimum of three courses and encourage students to register for four classes each nine weeks.

2. Have a physical exam by a licensed physician after May 1, 2012 and have the required forms completed.

3. Complete the student Participation/required forms, complete the Emergency Card, plus the Transportation Form. Turn them into the Millard West Activities Office.

4. Millard Public Schools has an annual non refundable participation fee of $60.00 for each student participating in NSAA sponsored interscholastic competitions. All students participating who have paid the $60.00 fee receive the Millard West student athletic admission pass and a participation card. .

All forms are available in the Millard West Activities Office. They may be picked up Monday through Friday from 7:30 A.M. to 3:45 P.M. They will also be available on our website under Activities.

When all of the above steps have been completed and filed in the activities office...each student will be issued an Athletic Participation Card, which verifies that they have met all requirements for participation in athletics. Each student must give their Participation Card to their respective coach when checking out for their first practice. NO STUDENT MAY PRACTICE OR CHECK OUT EQUIPMENT UNTIL THEIR PARTIC-IPATION CARD IS TURNED INTO THEIR COACH.

PLEASE! Don’t put off getting your physical or completing and turning in the necessary forms. Get them turned in well ahead of the first scheduled practice. A NEW PARTICIPATION CARD IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY FOR PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETICS. WINTER SPORTS COACHES INFORMATION EMAIL ADDRESSES

We are offering a Millard West Athletic Pass. Cost is $50 and the pass is good for 2012-2013 Millard West home events. NSAA events and tournaments are excluded.

Join the Millard West Athletic Booster Club. Help this organization support our athletes and coaches with parents’ nights, banquets and fundraisers to help us provide in areas where revenues don’t match needs. A booster club membership entitles each family to two booster passes which admit the holder at no charge to all Millard West athletic events, EXCEPT VARSITY FOOTBALL AND VARSITY BASKETBALL. FUTURE WILDCAT NIGHT

Millard West is again sponsoring “Future Wildcat Nights” at our home basketball games. Each of the feeder schools will be recognized on a specific night. Students from the “featured” school will receive free admission, a coupon for the concession stand and entered in a drawing for prizes.

SPRING BASEBALL (9-12 BOYS) All Spring sports, including Baseball, will begin on Monday, February 25th. All participants must have the Ivory Card process (physical, forms, fees) completed before that date to be eligible to tryout. You may give your ivory card to Coach Ryan at any time between now and Wednesday, February 20th. There will be some informational meetings for more details on the upcoming season (see dates listed below). Just showing-up on February 25th is not the proper way to get ready. PLAYERS are responsible to obtain the proper information and to communicate with the coaches if they are interested. Students in grades (10-12), not in a Winter sport, will have the opportunity to participate in formal strength & conditioning workouts that have already begun (see Coach Ryan or Sadowski). The coaches can provide a strength workout card to the 9th graders, but formal sessions are not possible due to space limitations. Important Baseball Dates :
