JANUARY 2013 News Briefs Brief items from the past month related to public art in Florida

FLORIDA 1) MARK YOUR CALENDARS – FAPAP CONFERENCE:
Reaching Across the Aisle: Public Art Partnerships
May 9 -11, 2013 (noon to noon) in Clearwater and surrounding area
Put it on your calendar NOW and look for more details soon.
2) Time to RENEW your membership for 2013. FAPAP is working on a map of Public Art Programs in the
state. Make sure your public art program is a member so that it will be highlighted as such on the map!
We have identified over 60 public art programs in the state of Florida!

BROWARD 1) An interview with Public Artist and Board member Beth Ravitz about the artist in residence project for

2) The Broward Cultural Division has issued a press release related to their inclusion in the Public
Art Archive. It reads as follows:
Broward County Cultural Division is pleased to announce that its 243 piece public art collection
can now be found on The Public Art Archive website. [info on the Public Art Archive].
Visitors to the Public Art Archive website will find detailed information on a wide variety of
Broward County artworks, from a sculptural installation that depicts the 3000 year history of
the written word in Libros at Northwest Regional Library, to a complete integrated circular

space with intricately-designed wall panels and terrazzo floor designed with wavy lines of
different colors to commemorate the Middle Passage route of slave ships from West Africa
across the Atlantic Ocean to America in The Harrambe Room, at the African-American Research
Library and Cultural Center. In Broward County Parks artworks can take a viewer through the
colorful front doors of the Secret Woods Nature Center Exhibition Hall which features a glass
mosaic fresco that represents the flight of butterflies or allow visitors to Sunshine Ranches
Equestrian Park to witness the winter and summer solstice through two saddle-shaped forms
made of concrete, placed to align with sun rises and sets during those times.

PALATKA The City of Palatka and the Arts Council of Greater Palatka has been awarded an Our Town grant part of which will be used for public art on the river front park on the St. Johns River.
ST. PETERSBURG St. Petersburg-based public artist Cecilia Lueza is currently installing a series of art benches commissioned by the
city of Lewiston, Idaho. The four seasons provided the inspiration for the aluminum, concrete, and mosic glass
tile benches.
