January 2013
Principal’s MessageColumbia Community,Happy New Year! Thank you to the entire Columbia community and all Aurora residents for their support of 3C in our November elections. This is my sixth year as principal, and the first year where I can share news with our community regarding adding resources and staffing back into our school for your children. Over these past several years, we have had to cut due to declining state and national economy 17 staff while maintaining the same number of students. Although this mill will not replace that many staff members, it is a great step in a positive direction. The impact of this new investment in our district will be developed in a couple of different phases. The first phase is the immediate access to additional staffing funds for the spring semester 2013 this school year. The second phase will be the addition of long range planning for July 1, 2013 and beyond.
During the December meeting with our PTSO/Accountability committee, the overwhelming consensus for supporting Columbia with phase 1 this spring will be the addition of a Spanish foreign language elective and additional support for math and after school tutoring during “Overtime”. As a direct result of this feedback, I would like to share with you plan of actions for bringing these sup-ports to Columbia.
Based on PTSO/Accountability feedback at the beginning of Decem-ber, we posted two positions (Spanish and Math Intervention) with the Aurora Public Schools Human Resources department. Candidates were screened and interviews held on December 21, 2012. As of the drafting of this letter to you, we are in the process of complet-ing reference and background checks for the top candidates in our interviews. We anticipate this to be completed by the second week of the new semester.
Meanwhile, I am working with the math and math intervention teach-ers to identify students who are struggling and will develop classes for these students. Also, before break, we developed a registration form for Spanish that was distributed in all of our elective (PE, Art and Music) classes. We will use these forms to determine the number
of sections and seats needed, and build that schedule as well when we return from break. What this may mean for your son/daughter is that they will start second semester with their original schedule based on current resources when they come back January 7, 2013, and then transition to a different elective or intervention schedule in late January for the remainder of the school year as our new resources become available.
At the same time, we are creating specific support contracts for our after school “Overtime” program. Columbia offers after school support in the media center five nights a week from 4 PM – 5 PM, with a bus provided on Monday and Wednesday each week. The bus is ONLY for kids who normally ride the school bus to and from Columbia at our regular stops that are attending our “Overtime” program. We have also secured free snacks for the kids who stay in “Overtime” from our partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies. I will be adding two additional staff to the one hour block after school to support the needs of this program. We utilize the media center to allow students access to computers, books, research materials and tables where they may work independently, in small groups or larger settings.
Phase two of the funding through Mill Levy 3C will begin July 1, 2013 and provide a more permanent plan for supporting all school in APS. The district leadership team is analyzing budgets, state revenues and many other aspects of fiscal resources to appropriately inform building principals of the process for accessing resources in the school year to come.
My commitment to you is to work toward strengthening our overall program, adding in resources and equipment, and returning staffing levels to as close to what they used to be as possible. I am excited for the New Year ahead and the possibilities additional resources will mean to our school community.
Happy New Year!Steve Hamilton, Principal
Steve Hamilton, Director

Update Your Contact Information Please make sure that your contact information is correct and up to date. Should an emergency arise and we do not have current information this could delay any phone call informing you of the situation.
If you have a new phone number, you may contact the school directly to update the change. For any additions or deletions of emergency contacts, a Demographic Change Form needs to be filled out and given to the school to submit to the Centralized Admissions office.
You may obtain a Student Demographic Change form at the school or on the Aurora Public Schools web site at http://admissions.aurorak12.org/requirements/admissions-forms
Reminder When Withdrawing Students from ColumbiaWhen withdrawing your student from Columbia, please let Mrs. Morin in counseling know at least 24 hours in advance of the withdrawal. The parent/guardian needs to sign a withdrawal form in the counseling office. The student is then responsible to take a withdrawal paper around to their classrooms, media center, cafeteria and nurse for signatures on their last day of attendance. They must also clean out their hall locker and PE locker (if applicable) and return all Columbia materials, such as textbooks, library books, etc.
Change of AddressHave you moved? Does Aurora Public Schools have a current address on file for you? If not, you will need to visit Centralized Admissions to complete the “Student Demographic Change” form. You must bring current *** proof of address and a photo ID with you.
Centralized Admissions is open Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. No appointment necessary. This office is open year round (including fall, one week in winter, spring and summer breaks) but closed district holidays.
Centralized Admissions Office: 1085 Peoria Street, Aurora, CO 80111 (SW corner of 11th Avenue and Peoria Street)
***For specific document requirements or to learn more about Centralized Admissions, visit http://admissions.aurora12.org
Please Make Appointments In AdvanceDue to budget cuts we have experienced in past years we have gradually reduced our staff significantly. This means everyone has to pitch in to cover more supervision areas and take on more daily tasks. For efficiency, we are requiring parents to please make appointments in advance to communicate with teachers, counselors and administrators regarding student needs. If you show up without an appointment, we might not be able to help you right away and you will be asked to return at a later, more convenient time for the person you need to see.

News
Congratulations to Roy Spratt and Rebecca Wegman for earning the PRIDE teachers of the month for November.
Our Leadership team has been working diligently with students to find new and interesting ways in incorporate P.R.I.D.E. into the everyday lives of students, faculty and parents. They have worked on the P.R.I.D.E. wall and prizes for earning P.R.I.D.E. tickets. Everyone can help. Feel free to ask anyone at Columbia questions aboutP.R.I.D.E. We could even use parent volunteers to be a part of P.R.I.D.E. at Columbia Middle School.
At the end of each progress report period(approximately 2 per quarter), Columbia celebrates students who earn 3’s and 4’s for work habits and no behavior referrals with a rewards lunch. While weather is nice, these students will eat outside and drawings for prizes will be held. Our next rewards lunch will be held January 11th during all lunch periods.
PTSO has graciously sponsored gift cards to award to two boys and two girls. Also, all students who celebrated received popsicles.
We are always welcoming new ideas and/or donations for the P.R.I.D.E. program at Columbia Middle School. Some items to consider donating would be pencils (with or without logo’s), candy, small games and/or toys.
Please contact Justin Witzke at (303) 690-6570or (303)326-4718 with your questions or comments or to make a donation.

APS NoticesRegistered Nurses, this is for you!Aurora Public Schools employs registered nurses and may have one or more positions posted this spring. The job is a chal-lenging, high energy, non-traditional role for BSN, with a great deal of autonomy. It requires someone with strong assessment, communication and organizational skills, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of students from 0-21. School nurses work the same schedule as teachers. Recent experience in public health or pediatrics is preferred. Training is provided. If you would like to find out more about school nursing, please call Mary Beth Rensberger, Health Services Director, at 303-365-7813.
Town Center at Aurora Offers APS Computer Kiosks APS parents can access computer kiosks at the Town Center at Aurora shopping mall to view their children’s Parent Portal accounts, find information on the APS website, or browse mall shopping opportunities.
The APS Parent Portal is part of the Infinite Campus student information system. The portal is a secure, confidential website that allows parents to view current information about their child’s attendance, grades, class assignments and other resources. To ac-cess the Parent Portal, parents must request a Parent Portal ID from their child’s school and then follow the online instructions to set up the account.
The computer kiosks are located on the first level of the mall near Guest Services and on the second level in the food court. The kiosks are a joint venture between Aurora Public Schools and the Town Center at Aurora and are provided as a free service to APS parents and students.
