January Highlights
Great Performance: From ViennaThe New Year’s Celebration 2012Sunday, January 1 at 10:30pm
Legendary star of stage and screen Julie Andrews returns as host of the festive annual New Year’s celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna Philharmonic’s traditional New Year’s program has showcased Viennese musical culture at the highest level, and since the first television broadcast in 1959, sent the world a New Year’s greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.
Great Performances: Let Me Down Easy Friday, January 13 at 9pm; Sunday, January 15 at 2pm
Anna Deavere Smith interviews an eclectic range of people and then performs as the interviewees in their own words. These portraits range from boldface names to lesser-known, but equally memorable characters — all sharing their searing experiences in confronting the price and politics of health, facing the end of life and encountering the ultimate resilience of the human spirit.
American Masters: Phil Ochs There But for FortuneMonday, January 23 at 10pm
One of the most politically active singer-songwriters to emerge in the 1960s, Phil Ochs was inspired by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, but also by Elvis Presley and John Wayne. He was a journalism student in college, which, perhaps, informed the extent of his protest lyrics — always witty, topical and insightful, always slightly haunting.
Great Performances: Tony Bennett: Duets II Friday, January 27 at 9pm
Bennett made music history with Duets II when it debuted at the top of the Billboard Album charts, making Bennett the oldest artist to ever achieve the #1 spot. This program features his greatest hits, performed by today’s biggest stars, highlighted by insights on the process from the performers, making for an entertaining and fascinating profile of one of the year’s most celebrated recordings.

IN Focus: I-69: Are We There Yet?Thursday, January 26 at 8pm; Sunday, January 29 at 4:30pm
The U.S. Department of Transportation has called Interstate 69 one of America’s six Corridors of the Future. Its route from Port Huron, Michigan, south through Indiana, to Brownsville, Texas is intended to facilitate trade with Canada and Mexico. This documentary looks at how the winding history of a highway informs the issues at hand today and is immediately followed by an IN Focus special discussion on the topic.
Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, Season 2 Sundays, January 8 - February 19 at 9pm
Multiple Emmy winner (including Outstanding Miniseries!) Downton Abbey resumes the story of aristocrats and servants of Downton Abbey during the tumultuous World War I era. The international hit, written by Julian Fellowes, stars Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern and Hugh Bonneville, as well as a drawing room full of new actors, portraying the loves, feuds and sacrifices of a glittering culture thrown into crisis.

The New York Philharmonic This Week is a year-long series of broadcasts taken from virtually the Orchestra’s entire subscription season.
Interspersed with concerts from Avery Fisher Hall, the two-hour programs will be taken from the Philharmonic’s international tours, their Summertime Classics Series, their residency at Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado, as well as their extensive library of commercial and archival recordings.
The New York Philharmonic This Week debutsSundays at 8 pm
Your host is stage, screen, and TV star Alec Baldwin, who made his Philharmonic debut narrating Inside the Music. Since its first concert in 1842, the New York Philharmonic has played a leading role in American musical life. It currently plays some 180 concerts a year, and in 2010 gave its 15,000th concert — a milestone unmatched by any other symphony orchestra.
In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world’s best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters, and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream are shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, and a new libretto by Jeremy Sams.
Conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes, Plácido Domingo as Neptune, Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanzo play Miranda and Ferdinand.

Dear Friends,
You may wonder why I’m coming back with a new series on this public television station. I’m coming back because in tumultuous times like these I relish the company of people who make sense of the tumult. Those are the people I’ll bring to my new broadcast, Moyers & Company.
Journalism has long been for me a continuing course in adult education. Given what’s happening nowadays, I’m signing up for more classes. Battered by a hundred new sensations every day, I swing between gloom and hope. I wonder if any of us in this disputatious, over-analyzed, over-televised, over-wired and under-tenderized country know what the deuce we’re talking about, myself included. Well into my seventh decade, all my illusions are up for grabs and I find myself reassessing many of the assumptions that served me comfortably much of my life.
I need all the help I can get in figuring out how to remain faithful to what really matters.
So I’ll be reaching out in this new series to people who have tested their ideas against experience, who are engaged in the trials and errors of democracy, and who believe the health of our body politic is everybody’s business. George Orwell believed that “all issues are political issues.” Scientists, historians, artists, novelists, physicians and physicists – they all help us see the world anew, and to make informed choices. So this will be a political series, but not a partisan one. In the conversation of democracy, everyone’s invited. Yours Truly,
