Happy New Year! As we say goodbye to 2011, we look forward to what we have in store in 2012. As many of you would already know, 2012 is going to be a year full of fantastic new releases from the Royal Australian Mint. Some of these exciting releases are in the pages of this first Mint Issue of 2012. But first, I’ll bring you up to speed on Mint news from the last months of 2011.

The Mint played host to a full range of emergency service vehicles on Saturday 5 November for the launch of the 50 years of Triple Zero coin. All ages were invited to explore the various emergency services vehicles, have their faces painted and enjoy a sausage sizzle. It was a very well attended event, with reports that much fun was had and even our tour guide was inundated with keen visitors wanting to find out more about the Mint and collecting.

To celebrate the commencement of production of the Australian Open collectible coin program we were lucky enough to host the two Australian Open trophies and the 100th Men’s Championship Medal on Thursday 10 November. Hundreds of lucky sporting fans took up the opportunity to feel like Grand Slam champions and have a photo holding the historic trophies. Look out for these coins on page 8 and 9.

On Tuesday 22 November, we attended Parliament House for the National Launch of the UN International Year of Cooperatives.

Our Minister, Assistant Treasurer The Hon Bill Shorten, officially launched the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives $1 uncirculated coin, which was admired by all who attended, with many lamenting that the coin was not available to purchase until January. Turn to page 21 to have a look at the design.

The year finished in celebration, after the Mint received two awards in its first entry into the Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards on Friday 25 November. The Mint submitted entries into two categories, which resulted in a win for its Education Program and a commendation for the 'Visit the Mint – it makes Cents' Tourism Marketing Campaign.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you at our traditional last coin/first coin event at the Shop on New Year’s Eve/Day. It is one of the most popular events we hold at the Mint each year with many people vying for the unique opportunity to make the last coin of the year or the first coin of the year.

Happy collecting

As Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II has been an undeniably important part of Australia’s history, identity and role in the world theatre. Since her accession to the throne in 1952, she has overseen many changes within the Commonwealth, and indeed to the social, political, cultural and technological fabric of the globe.

This fun collection of international currency is presented in a colourful, book-style presentation folder. The folder measures 360 mm x 305 mm when closed so it is a great size to share. Adults and children alike can learn about the coins of the Commonwealth as they investigate where each of the 44 included coins belong in an interactive activity that the whole family will enjoy.

The folder also contains an information booklet describing all of the coins and their corresponding nations in more detail.

2012 50c Fine Silver Proof CoinThe St Edward’s Crown was used in The Queen’s coronation ceremony in 1953 which is why it takes centre stage in these magnificent designs for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The detail in this most historic and bejewelled crown is seen best on the fine silver proof version. The silver also gleams in the custom designed presentation case flocked with a royal purple inlay and complemented by a metal badge insert marking it with the series logo of the Royal Australian Mint Royal Collection range.

The Queen's Diamond JubileeThe 2012 Royal Gold and Silver Sets

Together with The Queen’s Royal Mints of the Commonwealth, The Royal Mint and Royal Canadian Mint, we have produced a remarkable coin for a three coin set exclusively commissioned for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Each coin has ended up being quite reflective of the three strong cultures. The Australian coin is modern and uncluttered and strikes a bold but elegant contrast to the other designs. It was designed by Michael Meszaros,

a very talented sculptor who can claim a proud family link to Australian numismatic history.

The four Grand Slam® tournaments: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, represent the pinnacle of world tennis competition. Wimbledon was the first of these tournaments and commenced in 1877, with the Australian Open, originally the Australasian Championships, starting in 1905. Since then the Australian Open has been contested each year, except during the two World Wars and in 1986, when the tournament shifted from mid-December to mid-January.

Official Australian Open Men's and Women's Trophy CoinsThe uncirculated coins feature the iconic trophies of the Australian Open presented on a background of curved stripes that mirror the rubber strip on a tennis ball. Given the iconic stature of both the Men's and Women’s trophies, we have given them their own respective coins.

Similar to the Ram’s Head Dollar produced in 2011, the 2012 Mintmark Series will feature a replica of the pre-decimal Australian threepence. Also designed by George Kruger Gray, the first wheat sheaf threepence design appeared in circulation from 1938 to 1964.

The imagery depicted on this coin reflects a hardworking Australia, that for 120 years has enjoyed an expanding economy because of the successful development of its primary industries.

What better way to celebrate an Australian success story than with the 2012 $1 Silver Proof Wheat Sheaf Coin. It is stamped with the Canberra mintmark and presented in a black leatherette case along with its Certificate of Authenticity.

2012 Australian Wheat – Two Coin Proof Set & Two Coin Uncirculated SetThe cultivation and harvest of wheat are central to the design of the one dollar, while the twenty cent coin harkens to the historic Wheat Sheaf Penny design that appeared on Australia’s pre-decimal currency. Fields of golden wheat can be found across the breadth of Australia. Since the early days of settlement these crops have played an important role, from the self sufficiency of a young nation to an industry that contributes billions of dollars to our national economy today. In 2012 these coins reflect the outstanding contribution that wheat has made and will continue to make to Australia’s agricultural and economic development.

2011 $5 Frosted Uncirculated CoinIn 2011, Remembrance Day fell on the significant date of the 11 November 2011. To mark this sombre occasion we have produced a five dollar coin that features the Flanders poppy. This coin design incorporates a slightly scalloped edge that mimics the delicate petals of this iconic flower, and thus creates a tasteful symbolic collectible of this momentous date for 2011. This shape is quite rare for the Mint to produce and fitting for the occurrence of the historic date 11.11.11.

Great gift idea for all emergency personnel!

2011 50c Uncirculated CoinIn 1961 the Post Master General introduced the concept of a single national number, triple zero (000), to provide direct access to emergency services.

Prior to this service operating, anyone wishing to call for emergency assistance needed to know the number of their nearest service centre.

To celebrate this 50 year milestone, we have created a colourful 50c coin-in-card that is sure to ‘raise the alarm’ with any collector. This pad printed coin design features the three main emergency services; Police, Ambulance and Fire, with the iconic triple zero logo in the centre. The coin comes packed in convenient credit card style packaging. If you’re an avid 50c coin collector then don’t wait for an emergency, add this one to your collection today.

In 2012, Australia celebrates the Year of the Farmer. It is a year to acknowledge the efforts of farming communities and the 136 000 farms across our vast brown land, as well as the rural industries and agribusinesses that they support.

We have farmers to thank for our food and natural fibres. Though they are often faced with challenges never experienced, nor fully understood, by their urban-dwelling cousins, Australian farmers continue to supply us with some of the best produce in the world.

This $1 uncirculated coin design illustrates the biodiversity of Australia’s farming communities in the fields of both agriculture and animal husbandry. It showcases farming across the broad spectrum of agribusiness from fruit orchards to fields of wheat, sheep and cattle farming, all dependent on the strategic and talented use of water, the scarcest of all resources.

“Co-operatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility”— United Nations.

The United Nations has declared 2012 to be the International Year of Cooperatives, with the General Assembly President commending cooperatives on their contribution to food security, rural development and other social services.

Voluntary, democratic, independent and self-sufficient, the co-operative business model has been a major factor in realising economic growth and social development. Since the 1850s, they have been a part of Australia’s socio-economic landscape, employing locals and redistributing profits back into local communities.

To celebrate the important role that co-operatives play in our communities and beyond, the Royal Australian Mint has introduced a commemorative $1 uncirculated coin. The coin features building blocks, which represent the role that co-operatives play in providing stability in a fast-paced global economy.

This coin set is presented in a leatherette case and is accompanied by a plaque and printed card where you can enclose that something extra – even though on their own these coins will impress. Stunning proof coins will be a welcome inclusion in any wedding gift register or for those special wedding anniversaries in 2012.

2011 $5 Uncirculated CoinIn October, Her Majesty The Queen visited Australia as part of her official attendance at the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Perth.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, this is Her Majesty’s sixteenth visit to our shores.

To commemorate this visit, Royal Australian Mint senior coin sculptor Wojciech Pietranik has created a regal design featuring sixteen St Edward’s Crowns, to symbolise each of Her Majesty’s visits to Australia, on an uncirculated five dollar coin.

The coin is then presented in an exclusive display card with majestic colours which also includes a special pocket to add the Vladimir Gottwald design of the CHOGM 2011 commemorative circulating $1 coin, completing the Royal Collection for 2011.

2011 20c Circulating Rolled CoinThe United Nations declared 2001 the International Year of Volunteers. To celebrate and recognise this historical UN announcement and the wonderful contribution these people make to all communities, we have produced a circulating 20 cent coin, which will be complemented by the release of an exclusive rolled coin product. The coin design features a ring of volunteers that together foster the exchange of experiences as well as the strengthening of partnerships which help to promote and implement their various individual volunteer projects. The centrepiece of this coin is the official UN International Year of Volunteers logo which is also featured on the wrapper.

* Rolled coin releases will be suspended in 2012 for operational reasons.

The Royal Australian Mint is home to the National Coin Collection. We are proud to house a collection which is currently valued at $23 million (and growing!!). We keep two of everything we make, plus we have a historical collection and many other interesting pieces.

This collection also houses a variety of minting errors, which you, as collectors, would realise the value in such rarities. A selection of these errors are currently on display in our gallery as a part of our free “One in a Million: Treasures from the Royal Australian Mint” exhibition. For those of you who can’t make it to the Mint to view the exhibition, here is a highlight…

Two Ounce Silver BottletopThis error occurred when two silver blanks were struck at the one time. As there was no space for the excess metal in the collar, the metal has had to spread out around the die, resulting in this large vessel being produced. This is a one-off 2000 $1 ‘Proclamation’ Proof Coin. It has been valued at $2,500.
