IEPA Landfill Ban – Electronic Items Banned Jan. 1, 2012 Next Elmhurst College Collection is Saturday, April 14, 2012! Illinois legislators passed the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, Public Act 97-0287, in August, banning 17 electronics from landfills. The law makes it illegal for consumers to dispose of banned items in the trash and makes it illegal for landfills to accept them. Violations carry a $7,000 fine for waste haulers. According to a SCARCE representative, residents may be fined $1,200 per item. Every business that sells electronics in Illinois is required to have signage informing customers of the ban and recycling options. These products contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and beryllium that must be properly managed to prevent soil and groundwater contamination. This list of electronic items joins other items banned from landfill disposal in Illinois including, lead-acid batteries, landscape waste, tires, white goods, and motor oil.
