Reach Out and MakeNew Friends

Studies indicate that socialconnections boost mental andphysical health. Making newfriends can enrich your life. Hereare some ways to connect withothers:

Show some enthusiasm. Beexcited about meeting newpeople and seeing friendlyacquaintances again.

Follow up. After aconversation or outing withsomeone new, follow up to sayyou enjoyed it.

Take an interest. Figure outwhat someone’s hobbies are,and then find something relatedto that interest. If a relevantarticle or coupon comes yourway, pass it along.

Join the club. Find anorganization centered on one ofyour pastimes or passions tomeet like-minded people.

Accept invitations. Instead ofwatching TV, why not get outand mingle?

Keep it light. When making anew friend, stick with neutralsubjects. Remember, safe topicsdon’t have to mean boringconversation. As you get toknow people, you’ll graduallydiscover their opinions aboutmore serious issues.

Smile and wave. Greet peopleyou know and people you don’twhen you see them. A friendlyface may be all your newneighbor needs to feel rightat home.
