Community Service
Needs Desire to Serve
Fiji Community in America
People in Action…
This picture shows the organizers of the Fiji Idol—The picture was taken during the 2011 Fiji Idol held at the Chandni Restaurant in Fremont, CA late last year.
The desire to serve is the key characteristic of community workers. There may be some who get into public life for self gains but they have a short—lived public life because of their selfish desire. It is said, that it is never crowded at the extra mile, as there are only a few from every community who go out to truly serve their community or nation. The members of the ‘Fiji American National Associa-tion’—FANA have gone out to serve the Fiji community in the San Francisco Bay Area and the great-er Bay Area for the last many years by staging various programs including the popular Fiji Idol and the Fiji Festival. Some are still there since the inception of the organization and some have joined them later but the activities have been going on regular basis. Fiji community’s identity has been es-tablished in the Bay Area by these programs particularly by the Fiji Festival. As a pioneer member of USA Fiji Festival responsible for introducing the Charity Queen Contest it gives me pride to see the current members at work. Also as a Past National President of Fiji Jaycees and California Jay-cees and Jaycees International Senator I salute all who go out to serve their communities.

First Casino for Fiji The granting of license for Fiji’s first casino is a great step to Fiji in terms of its international status. It is be-lieved an American company has been granted the approval to set up the casino at the Denarau Island. Fiji has the American taste after McDon-ald’s opened its outlet in Fiji and with the casino in place the country will enjoy its benefits too. The project will be highly beneficial to Fiji as it will create employment and provide tax-es and funding for essential commu-nity projects. The people of Fiji who have not traveled to USA or abroad will get an opportunity to get the feel of casino and the lucky ones will take their wins home. The tourists who are fond of the casinos will feel homely and try their hands on the fortune machines. All in all the pro-ject seems highly beneficial for Fiji government and its people.

A Fiji’s Past MEMORIES TO CHERISH.. .
Some Sugar—Cane
Farms—Now History Fiji’s sugar cane industry during its peak days was not just an industry, its was a phenomenon. While it contributed towards Fiji’s major economy it was the livelihood of many in Fiji, whose life revolved around the cane farming industry. All of the west and most of the north was fully involved in the production of cane and the country depended on it as its major income earner. A lot of the farmers did not physically see a lot of money coming out of their daily hard work, many times in scorching heat, but they still de- pended on it as their sole i n c o m e source. A lot of cash was traded with the goods and services they needed dur-ing the year for their living. The shop keep- ers in the sugar cane re- gion made fortunes by p r o v i d i n g goods to the f a r m e r s throughout the year on cred-it system and o b t a i n e d cash when the cane payments were made to the farmers.
Apart from the actual farming there were lots of other related activities carried out on around the cane fields. There was lots of socialization such as having tea, lunch and even grog sessions together and that provided a sense of belongingness and togetherness to the farm-ers. It gave them a community of their own which was far different from the lives in Fiji’s urban areas. If the cane farms could speak they would narrate many memorable events that took place there. Today many of these, once prosperous farms are lying idle covered with bush and have become history.

Does the Parents’ Karma Determine the Type of Children who Will be Born to Them ?
Yes. If the parents have good karma, they will be happy in their children, without worry, anxiety,
etc. Otherwise they will suffer through the bad fate or conduct of the children. Because of their past karma, they are fated to undergo this type of sufferings. For example, Gandhari was a very pure and chaste woman but her karma caused her to suffer mental agony on account of her son’s misdeeds.
Does the Parents’ Karma Affect the Children?
The actions or deeds of the parents in a particular birth cycle will affect the children in the same birth only. The effect will not be carried over to the next birth. For example, a father may incur heavy financial debts but dies before he is able to repay them. The burden of repaying the debts falls upon the son. The son is thus affected by this father’s actions in that birth only. The debt will be repaid in the same birth and will not be carried over to the next.
The parents’ karma of past births does not affect the children. Everyone is born according to his or her own individual karma. When you die, you carry with you only your own good deeds and bad deeds, not other people. When you are born, you have your own karma-kantamala around your neck and not other people’s. So, one’s present situation in life depends upon one’s own karma or actions of the past and not on the karma of other people. But, although the parents’ karma does not affect the karma of the children, both their karmas are related and inter-woven.
For example, suppose you have a set of parents who are good and noble in every way but they have an invalid or disabled child who is bed-ridden. Due to past karma, the parents are fated to undergo the sorrow of having an invalid child. The child, on account of past karma, is fated to undergo physical suffering. Or, suppose you have another set of parents who are also good and noble but are unhappy because their daughter is
widowed. Due to past karma, the parents are fated to undergo the type of sorrow caused by
having a widowed daughter. The daughter, due to her past karma, is fated to suffer widow-
hood. In both cases, you have two sets of individual karmas that are linked together.

Our Existence in this
Physical Universe Our existence in this Universe is something
we wonder about, from time to time. We are born and eventually die. Our existence as hu-mans is very consistent with whatever exits in this physical universe. Everything in nature comes, flourishes, decays and finally goes. Since our existence is apparently governed by the laws of this universe, our lives may be sub-ject to some kind of universal programming. The question is to what extent? We will never know the truth but can only speculate.
Generally, Hindus believe that planetary influences have significant impact on human lives. Many other people also hold similar beliefs. In fact, Hindus believe that the Nava-graha need to be appeased to minimize pain and suffering that comes with their unfavor-able positioning. In the Hindu system, the Navagraha comprise 5 visible Planets, Sun and the Moon, and two planets unique to Hindu astrology, named, Rahu and Ketu. Who would dispute that Sun does not have an effect on our existence; indeed it is central to our existence. And the Moon? Well, about 55% to 75% of human bodies are composed of water, and water covers 70 % of the Earth’s surface. Moon’s gravitational force exer-cises its effects on our bodies and water on this Earth. All nearby heavenly bodies must have some effect on us, although we do not know how much, for sure.
Despite the possibility that our lives are programmed to some extent, I believe that our Creator has not doomed us by bringing us in this world. He has given us the ability to think and shape our lives. Perhaps, he presented some obstacles in our way to make us understand that life will not always be plain-sailing. Perhaps, it was meant for us to prove our worth as human beings. Imagine what kind of life we would have had if all good things were handed to us on a silver platter. Our constitutional make up is such that we derive satisfaction from achieving things. We are proud of what we achieve and have a sense of ownership of them. These achievements generate a sense of happiness and a feeling of usefulness and worth. Humans are supreme in the animal kingdom and are placed here to demonstrate that they are capable of higher things.
So regardless of the universal programming we may be subjected to, we are in a unique position; the only creatures of God who can make a discernible impact on not only our lives but on the lives of others.

In Getting Happiness Many Times Peace is
Ignored but it is Peace that we are Longing for
in Life….
We live in a life of competition, to better our lives, in terms of practical point of view, something that will give us physical satisfac-tion. This is a common characteristic of hu-man beings to look for physical satisfaction but whether this gives peace to us is a con-cept that is generally ignored. Being practical in this competitive world is acceptable as this will lead us to achieve our goals in life, that will provide us immense satisfaction with wealth, fame and whatever but the happi-ness may be limited to material things only. Material acquisition is sometimes tempo-rary even though you may have to spend your life acquiring it. As migrants our thoughts, may have unintentionally, changed over things, particularly relationships, as we may be looking at life from a practical point of view as we try to blend with a lifestyle which may be completely alien to some of us. In doing so we may become practical only and this may affect our relationships with whom we were close to, back in our for-mer home. Peace is attained by having positive emotion which is a rare quality found in us, some have more and some have less. Even by being practical in our daily lives we can al-ways have some emotions connected with it. Positive emotion is an ingredient of a happy life! Back in our former home Fiji, we may have been more emotional as we looked at things from a different perspective. It is generally believed that things that are material are not the real things, they will not get us closer to peace but may give us temporary happiness because we can physical-ly see the objects.
Peace is something that can only be felt within us and can not be seen and can never be bought like material things.

Road—Side Vendors
Fiji Today 2012
January
Road—side vending has been a common practice in most parts of Fiji. For a long time. The cur-rent vendors at the junction of the Mead Road and Princess Road in Tamavua seem to be facing struggle with the neighbors and the Suva City Council. It is believed their business from the site is causing alarm to the community and the city authority. When traveling fro Suva to Nadi you will meet many vendors along the roadside some selling fish, crabs and other sea food while the others sell vegetables. While traveling from Suva to Nausori along the King’s Road you will see many vendors selling vegeta-bles and fruits. The seven miles bridge site has been a popular fish selling spot for years. The eight miles shopping area is cov-ered by vendors selling particularly vegetables. This has been the way of life for these vendors who depend on it for their daily income.

Smoke—Free Villages
Fiji seems to be going health con-scious as some villages are being de-clared ‘smoke free’ in Vanu-alevu. I t seems two villages so far have faced ‘smoke—ban’ by the Minis-try of Health. Freelance smokers will now face the battle of smoke—ban as they will have to go to special areas allotted for smoking. It may be difficult for the smokers to abide by the new regulation and as such the ban could even cut down the number of smokers in the village. Smoking has effect on even the non—smokers as they are in the same envi-ronment where smoking takes place. The new regulation should bring about healthy environment in Fiji’s villages which are surrounded by the healthy and beautiful nature.

Reopening of School
Schools are an essential amenity in any commu-nity. The re-opening of a secondary school in Cakodrove, near Sa-v u s a v u which was c l o s e d down al-most thirty years ago is a welcoming news to the surrounding villages. With the lack of secondary school in the area the children had to travel long dis-tances to attend school and that incurred lots of expense and waste of traveling time. The school is believed to be in operation at the beginning of the next school term. A primary school at the site has been in operation and with the secondary section reo-pening it will provide great relief to the children’s education.

While Fiji has a ca-pacity to grow vari-ous types of crops, importance is being giv-en to pota-to, which is in great c o n s u m p -tion in al-most all homes in Fiji. Potato has been generally grown in Sigatoka Valley for years and now the crop is being planted in other parts of the western division of Fiji. The crop is being harvested now and being transported to the markets for sale. Government assistance is believed to have been going on for the last few years as a trial for boosting pota-to farming in Fiji.

Water Upgrading in West Water being the most e s s e n t i a l h u m a n n e e d should be r e a d i l y available to p e o p l e . Most resi-dents in Fi-ji’s western d i v i s i o n may not have been getting regular supply of tap water. The towns from Rakiraki to Sigatoka now will have constant supply of water after all the towns have had their water supply system upgraded. Millions of dollars spent on the project should be well appreciated by the residents of the west towns. The setting up of a reservoir in Ba would give the large district constant and better water supply. Water problems have been faced by most parts of the country in-cluding the central division in the recent past years.

A Ba Student’s Death
A Fiji Na-tional Uni-versity stu-dent is be-lieved to the recent victim of d rown ing . The Ba youth re-p o r t e d l y drowned in a river in the interior of Ba while crossing it. .This is believed to be the second drowning for this year. The deceased was a final year student ready for his gradu-ation and his family obviously was looking forward for his achievement. The grieving single mother’s dream of seeing her son graduate as an engineer is shattered for good as she lost her elder son. There seems to have been public warning for peo-ple to take care while crossing the river.
