Many long-time members will remember Viola and Roman Groves. They were excellent cab cutters, and worked hard behind the scenes at our shows. Roman also taught beginners, was a saw man, and kept the tumblers going 2417. This article appeared in the newspaper in Viola's new hometown, Harlan. Ohio. We thank Clara Minor for sharing this with us - Ed.

Groves finds beauty in rocks By Elizabeth Mahlberg News Reporter

HARLAN - They say that "curiosity killed the cat", but for Viola Groves and her late husband Roman, curlosl~ got them Into a hobby that has lasted more than 30 years.

Viola Is a rock collector. Five small milk cans that ware filled with small uncut geodes got Viola and her husband Into rock coIlectlng and lapidary. She explained that the containers were left by a

, nephew who brought them back from the mountains of Oregon. "He unloaded them at our place," said Viola. "I don't know why he did but he did.· She went on to say that for two years the cans sat In their home just taking up space. "Until one day my husband Roman became curious and cut Into a few of the geodes to see what was Inside.· The finding of extremely beautiful gemstones Inside of the geodes prompted the Groves to Joint the local rock club. Viola stili remains a member of the Castro Valley Gem and, Minerai Club.

Viola and Roman would nonnally look for rocks In , the mountains of california, Oregon, Arizona, Washington, Utah and Idaho. We would usually dig rocks that looked Interesting and might amount to somattMg when cut and polished." According to Viola, "You don't know what you will have until you ges-them out (dig the rocks), put water on them, cut them and polish.", Inside the geodes that Viola had on display were crystals. One that really sparked when held In the sunlight contained violet colored amethyst crystals.

Many of the beautifully rounded rocks on display In Viola's home came originally from large boulders which had to be cut down to size and then shaped. "Roman would make up to 15 cuts In the boulder to get It to the size desired for shaping and polishing. She explained that the process for shaping and polishing the rocks uses six different "grits· or powder-like substances from the rough all the way to find and extra-fine. "The rocks have to be on the move all the time,· noted Viola. "It takes between one to two weeks to achieve the desired shape."

Petrogl'lph

5 January 2002

Along with being members of a gem and minerai club, they were also members of the Airstream Club. 'We would travel together, sometimes 35 go 40 travel trailers would go out Into the mountains and everyone would dig rocks,· said Viola. "On the digs we always managed to come up with some fabulous finds.·

During the year the rock club would host a gem and minerai show. "The shows that we participated In would run about three days, and there would be around 40 dealers from all other the country and even overseas,· said Viola. She explained that this was a great place to display some of the rocks that they had dug, plus see some unusual and Interesting gems and minerals and lapidary equipment from other parts of the country.

Besldas the rocks that Roman and Viola would dig, shape and polish, Roman would make clocks from slabs of polished rock, glue different varieties of rock together, cut and polish and also make Items out of wood. "Along with the wooden clocks he made, my husband made most of the wooden bases that our rocks sit on,· Viola commented.

Another Interesting sidelight to come out of the years of "rock hounding" for Viola and Roman were that hand-made Kechlna dolls. Viola explained that Kachlna dolls were used by Indians to ward off spirits. "Using a fine white powder mixture,· says Viola, "my husband fashioned the bodies of the Kachlna dolls, one of which Is an Indian chief, the other one Is White Wolf.· The dolls were then clothed In Indian dress and adorned with faathers.

Viola, whose husband Roman was and one time manager of the old A & P Grocery store In Hartan has recently moved back to Hartan and stated that she probably won't be going on digs like she used to but planned to stili be Involved In the gem and minerai club and rock collecting and lapidary. Altheugh she Nis s"ld off seme eU/'te larger shaping and polishing machines that he husband had made, she still plans to continue on a smaller scale.

Viola Is a wealth of knowledge when It comes to the hobbles of rock collecting and lapidary and would like if) peHlbly, oenduot-& otaa&eF"two- for· students on those exciting subjects.

She also has some words of advice the next time an IndIvidual stumbles over a large unusual rock. "Don't just toss It side. Pick It up, examine It, maybe break a pIece off or cut It open. You never know what might be Inside.

ROCK RUMBLES Shirley Bu,t;chke

The shop Is really purring along. It's been a long time coming but It Is as good as before. Those members who designed and set up did a great job moving Into a much smaller place. So come and enjoy and use It and If you don't want to work, then come and gossip.

We hear Joe Hunt Is a recent bridegroom. Congratulations to you and your bride.

Walt Klal has been working on a brochure for our club. He has also sent off letters about grants but no luck so far. But he will keep trying so please let us know If your club or work place makes grants.

Our red-head Olnl Hum Is losing his hair as a result of radiation treatment. We wish him well and hope to see him at the shop. Bob Raymond Is also on the road to recovery.

The auction case Is slowly filling up. How can we support our shop expenses and scholarship fund without the auction? And get busy seiling tickets for the pendant designed by Ed Rigor. Jamie McDonald Is In charge and has ticket books which members are expected to sell (or you can buy the tickets). Doc's tree brought In $155 but that hardly makes a dent In our expenses.

I saw an ad In the Sunday paper for rocks painted with Insects or reptiles. They are river rocks In tWo sizis-about Inches and 3 Inches and Sill for $10 .and $20. Using these criteria Chartltte Snydlr'1 lady bugs must be worth $20·50. Some of you lucky people got them as door prizes.

Philip Nert was at the shop. He just retumed from an 8000 mile trip around the USA In his RV. He said he never did so well on gas before-paid 88 cents In Texas and Louisiana. John LovllI has retumed from an even longer trip. He spent a bit of time In China. Hope he 1IIIs us In on the highlights. He did some teaching and leamlng, of course, on this trip. John Is a professor at CSU Hayward. He teaches faceting on Sunday evening here at the shop.

Nlkl and Kart Churchill are planning a move to Patterson. Before leaving they donated a really sturdy workbench to the shop. Willy and Arland said It Is mighty strong and will support the heavy equipment. Sure will miss Nlki and Karl and hope they make It back occasionally. Kind of a long commute.

This month we have to give special thanks to Pat Hernandez for bathroom and shop cleaning. Remember we do not have janitorial service. Horace Robertlon has been vacuuming the foyer. So /2ltiD., gang. Do your part In keeping the place clean.

We had a visit from another member, Nlel Thornton. Nlel has been working as a refrigeration expert out of Texas. He Is sent on jobs all over the country. In fact his new (5 months old) truck has logged over 50,000 miles already. Next month he Is being sent on a job In HawaiI. I guess that's the only way to give the truck a rest. Niells one of those guys, like John Oullak, who can do almost anything. Wish he could be In the Bay Area more often; he Is an outstanding worker. He Is the one who donated us our marble slabs.

Another member showing up was Dick Dlnnll. He says he almost forgot how to make a cab but It Is coming back to him.

Plan on putting something In the competition case. The judges are really helpful In telling how you can Improve. Our club members all hope to win a ribbon, but I have never seen any cutthroat competition. It Is especially nice to see eyes light up In those who have had little experience as judges tell them what they did well, as well as how to Improve. The application Is in the Petrograph, or get one at the shop.
