Having celebrated an Advent season of joyful preparation, and the wonder-filled Christmas Season with its many bright feasts, we have now entered into “Ordinary Time” on the Church calendar. The purple and rose vestments of Advent, and the white and gold vestments of Christmastide, now give way to vestments of green. The word “Ordinary’ in “Ordinary Time” comes from “ordinal number.” The reason this is called “Ordinary Time” is because it is the time when we count the Sundays after Epiphany. Thus, today is the Second Sunday after Epiphany, or the “Second Sunday of Ordinary Time.”

Nevertheless, our movement from the heights of the Advent and Christmas Seasons reminds us that we live out our faith in the give and take of our ordinary, day to day lives, with its many challenges. Connecting with God, Reaching others, and Building community mostly takes place in the grind of our daily, routine relationships at home, in school, at the work place and business place. How can I trust that God’s got my back?

This is for everyone – yes that means you, too – the overworked, high-stressed, short on time – busy person with too much to do and so little time to “get-r-done.” Everyone out there who’s having a moment of self-doubt.

With our daily life getting tougher and more competitive, we put ourselves in this category. Most of us scroll down Facebook, looking for friends and support groups to help us through our busy life.

But in this age of new media, the age-old insurance policy of having faith in God, still works wonders. So if you’re feeling down, stuck in a rut or simply fed up, here are some thoughts to live by:

1. When God closes a door, he always opens a window.2. If God brings you to it; He will bring you through it.3. Believe in God and yourself. You’re doing better than you

think.4. “Try again. This time include me” – God.

“God has you in the palm of His hand. He has never once failed before, and the good news is, He is not about to start now.” Thank you GOD! (Isaiah 49:16)

-Deacon Tom

CONNECTING POINTSunday worship during the Christmas Season, the closing hymn at Mass last Sunday, on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, was “Go Make A Difference.” Everything we did to celebrate Advent and Christmas should propel us to go out and live the mission we were given at Baptism: to bring the light of Christ’s love to the world. Otherwise, our celebration was all in vain.

We thank everyone who helped to make the Advent and Christmas Seasons a blessed time for our parish community.

I am away this weekend on a Retrouvaille Weekend. Retrouvaille is a ministry to couples in troubled marriages. Please keep the couples we will be with this weekend in your prayers, that they may experience healing in their marriage.

Blessings,

Fr. Ron

ST. ISIDORE CHURCH MACOMB, MICHIGAN 4

On Tuesday, January 22nd we celebrate a day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Pope Saint John Paul II stated “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which all will rise up throughout the world… from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.” As you say a prayer for these unborn children, say one for the children who are born into poverty, some homeless, some not having enough food for even a small meal every day.

PRAYER BLANKET MINISTRYPrayer blankets & shawls are available at no cost in the St. Isidore church office

“A pond without fresh water flowing in and out soon becomes stagnant. Something similar happens to us if the flow of love is not continually received and given out to others.” (Fr. Kenneth E. Grabner, C.S.C.)

We are so grateful to all who help us spread the love of Jesus by giving a blanket or shawl to a person who needs prayers and comfort.

PRAYER: “Jesus, help us to learn to comfort others. Help us to be instruments of your comforting Spirit to those we meet along the way. Lay aside our fears, and let us trust in your faithful presence and sustaining love. Send us your spirit of courage and compassion. Amen.” (anonymous)

I R A R O L LO V E RPer the Archdiocese of Detroit: IRA Rollover Over 70-and-a half? What you need to know about the IRA charitable gift rollover. Congress has extended and the president has signed the favorable IRA charitable rollover tax provisions for 2015 and made them permanent for future years. What should a donor over age 70½ do in order to get the benefit that IRA distributions will not be included in taxable income? Donors should follow the same general procedures for IRA charitable distributions as in the past —

• Only direct distributions to charity up to $100,000 qualify as tax-free. Distributions in exchange for a charitable gift annuity or to a charitable remainder trust do not qualify.

• It is especially important that the IRA distribution be made payable to the charity, not to you as the IRA owner and beneficiary. Otherwise, the distribution would not qualify for the favorable tax treatment. Advise your IRA administrator to make the distribution check payable to the Church or other charity, not to you.

• Only distributions from traditional or certain Roth IRAs are tax-free; the law does not apply to other qualified retirement plans, such as 401(k) plans. However, you should consider consulting with your financial or tax advisor about the possibility of transferring funds from one of these other qualified plans to establish an IRA, with the distribution to charity coming from the newly established IRA.

• Consult with your IRA administrator and tax advisor on the proper procedures for making a direct distribution to St. Isidore, the Archdiocese of Detroit Endowment Foundation, the Catholic Services Appeal, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, or another archdiocesan institution or qualified charity.

A special note from St. Isidore: We thank the many parishioners who use this type of distribution to generously support the parish. We are blessed by this act of generosity.*St. Isidore will work to the best of our ability to track IRA distributions that come directly to the parish, but most often these distributions come in anonymously. Please contact our Business Manager, Chris Kozlowski ([email protected] or 586-745-9514) with any questions on how your distribution is being recorded.

UTE Ministry of Consolation

A two-day training for those who minister to the bereaved will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary later this month. The Ministry of Consolation Training Course will explore ways for parishes to begin a Ministry of Consolation or enhance present bereavement ministry programs.

Your CSA gifts allow the archdiocesan Office for Marriage, Family and Pro Life to offer this training with Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services at a nominal cost. The training topics to be covered include personal death awareness, the Order of Christian Funerals, communication and listening in grief ministry, and facilitating bereavement support groups.
