DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN“Cover up each cough and sneeze, if you don’t you’ll spread disease.” Centreville Press, October 17, 1918

Submitted by Marty Everse

An October 1918 ad in the Montevallo Advertiser read, “HEAD OFF SPANISH INFLUENZA or get well quickly by increasing your resistance, SULFIRON is the best remedy.” The ad was timely even though the tonic was useless. The plague had reached Montevallo. The public school was closed as were churches. The Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute shut down the beginning of the month and would not reopen until November. R. W. Hall, the editor of the Advertiser, seemed to downplay the seriousness of epidemic when he wrote, “All the cases we have heard of in this community have been light, and not many of them.” Two weeks later, he was ill and unable to publish the paper. The coal mine at Aldrich was particularly hard hit. A local druggist, H. E. Latham, noted there were 290 convicts at the mine and 290 cases of influenza there. All through the fall and winter, the neighborhood paper was filled with news of the flu’s handiwork. Wilton had 60 cases including Sam Vest’s entire family and 13 members of the Baker clan. In Montevallo, the Meroneys, Lymans, Browns, and Mulkeys, to name a few, all suffered. Fortunately, there were few fatalities. The first local death mentioned was Alice Eddings, the cook for Henry and Pauline McDill, followed by the young daughter of Sam Vest, Lucile, the end of October. Elisha Daniel Carpenter, Sr., Montevallo’s shoe maker, spent the Civil War dodging Yankee bullets under Stonewall Jackson but succumbed to the disease just before Christmas 1918.

Much like the recently promoted panaceas of hydroxychloroquine, ultraviolet light, and bleach, people were bombarded with therapeutics and preventatives. George’s Sea Food, a Birmingham restaurant, declared the best way to avoid the Spanish Influenza was to eat fresh oysters and fish. S. W. Pearson of Bessemer advocated what he felt was “a dead shot to the germ,” raw onions. Patent medicine companies touted their miracle cures. Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic, containing properties of quinine and iron, fortified the system against colds, grip, and influenza by purifying and enriching the blood. Inhal-Odor, fully charged with the odors of the eucalyptus, pine and camphor trees, peppermint plant and vanilla bean, when inhaled brought these healing and influenza preventing smells into direct contact with every inside part of the nose, head, throat and lungs.

The U. S. Public Health Service chimed in and responded the “so-called safe, sure and harmless remedies advertised by patent medicine manufactures” were dangerous and advised the wearing of a simple fold of gauze or mask to guard against breathing in dangerous germs as well as avoiding crowds. The crowd recommendation was a problem for men in the military preparing for service in World War I. More soldiers from the Montevallo area died from the flu than were killed in combat. Two of the first to be sent home in boxes were Lacy Latham, a sailor stationed at Newport, Rhode Island, followed shortly by James Wiley Fancher, a soldier at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Both are buried in the Montevallo cemetery.

By the fall 1919, any allusion to Spanish Influenza, flu, or grip in the Montevallo Advertiser ceased. Apparently, the disease would just burn itself out by 1920 but not before killing at least 50 million worldwide and 675,000 souls in the United States. In Alabama, nearly 12,000 people died of the flu in 1918 alone. The total toll will never be known.

Not only did Hill’s claim to prevent Spanish Influenza, it relieved nasal stuffiness, any ache or pain and constipation as well.

APRIL WEAVER ANNOUNCES RUN FOR STATE SENATE

Today, former Representative April Weaver announced her intention to seek the State Senate seat being vacated by Senator Cam Ward.

“I am so excited to announce my run for State Senate,” Weaver said. “As a lifelong resident of Senate District 14, I know the people and the communities. I am prepared to work hard and earn the votes of the hard-working citizens of Shelby, Bibb and Chilton Counties.”

In May of this year, Republican April Weaver was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve as the Region IV Regional Director for the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Weaver’s leadership experience in both public service and the private sector was the paramount reason she was asked to serve in the administration during the height of the COVID pandemic. A registered nurse who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, Weaver worked for over 23 years as a hospital leader in various management roles in urban, suburban and rural hospitals.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve in the Trump Administration,” Weaver added. “I am deeply proud of the incredible things we were able to accomplish to make ourÏ

country stronger, safer and more secure and was humbled that President Trump chose me to help during this health crisis. However, as this chapter of my life closes, another opens, and I am ready to serve the people of Alabama again.”

Prior to her appointment, Weaver served ten years as an accomplished state legislator in the Alabama House of Representatives, including five years as the chair of the House Health Committee. She served as the Chairman of the Shelby County House Delegation from October 2016 through May 2020. In her former House position, she was a member of the Shelby, Bibb and Chilton county legislative delegations, the same legislative delegations the Senate District 14 seat represents. During her tenure in the State House, Weaver had a reputation of being a hardworking, strong conservative on both fiscal and social issues.

“I have always been a fiscal conservative and I have been proud to stand up for the pocketbooks of the families I have represented,” Weaver added. “Senate District 14 needs a proven conservative with courage to stand up for them. My entire career in public service has demonstrated that I am that type of conservative.”

The election has not been formally called by Governor Kay Ivey yet and the elections dates are not set. Senator Ward’s resignation is official tomorrow (December 7, 2020).

Happy New Year!

ValloCycleTHE MONTEVALLO BIKE SHARE

BASICS OF BICYCLE SHIFTINGMontevallo is home to the oldest settlement in Shelby County. It was Jessie Wilson who claimed the hill on the northern bank of Shoal Creek to create a homestead. Hills have always been a part of Montevallo. Knowing how to utilize a multitude of gears on your bicycle is an essential skill. Many beginner cyclists fail to change gears throughout the ride. Follow this simple guide to shift like a pro!

Chainrings – these are the gears in the front near the pedals. They are attached to the crank arms that your feet turn. There are usually 2-3 gears on the chain-rings. Moving from the larger chainrings to the smaller chainrings will make pedaling easier. Moving this gear makes larger, more noticeable, changes to the drivetrain.

Cassette/freewheel - these are the gears attached to the rear wheel. There are usually 6-12 gears. Moving from the smaller gears to the larger gears will make pedaling easier. Moving this gear makes subtle, less noticeable, changes to the drivetrain. Shifters – in the United States bikes are commonly setup with the left shifter for the chainrings and the right shifter for the rear gears. When in doubt remember “Right is Rear.”

Purpose – the purpose of gears is to ensure a comfortable pedaling no matter what terrain you are traveling. Utilizing

different combinations of the front chainrings and the rear cassette/freewheel will allow you to pedal with ease.

Learning – find a flat and safe area to experiment with your bicycle. Put the chain in your small or middle front chainring. Now experiment by riding around and shifting into different rear gears. Get comfortable shifting while riding and learn which way to shift for the pedaling to become easier and which way to shift for the pedaling to become harder. Be sure you are pedaling while shifting; most gearing systems will only shift when you are pedaling.

When to Shift – Ideally you want to maintain the same cadence in pedaling on whatever terrain you are approaching. Shifting into easier gears when climbing a hill and harder gears while going down a hill would be ideal. Experienced cyclists shift into an easier gear as they approach a hill, not when already on the hill. Shifting while your chain is under load, such as going up a steep hill in a high gear, will be difficult.

Cross Chaining – is when your chain is at the extremes of its tolerance. Cross chaining occurs when the rear and front gears are each on the largest or each on the smallest. The bike chain is placed at an extreme angle. There is usually some additional chain noise associated with cross chaining. This scenario is to be avoided due to an increased likelihood of the chain coming off the gears.

Test out your new shifting skills on our next group ride! We welcome riders of all experience levels. ValloCycle is Alabama’s oldest citywide bike share. For more information visit vallocycle.org or contact [email protected].

GET YOUR NEWS YEARS RESOLUTIONS OFF ON A GOOD FOOT!

Back in September, we announced that Montevallo was awarded a national AARP Communities Challenge Grant. This grant was used to purchase and install functional exercise equipment at Orr Park and George Dailey Park. With over 2800 applicants, Montevallo continues to be recognized for its walkable community and sustainable initiatives.

The exercise equipment is an opportunity to move into the new year establishing healthy, sustainable habits! Sure, with commitment, you can get fit in a gym, but stuck inside, you miss out on the extra challenge and benefits that nature provides. The sun on your back, the breeze on your face, even the refreshing drop of rain, turns vigor into invigorating. Fresh air is an invaluable asset in making the body perform better, a natural partner to exercise and feeling good!

Orr Park will have equipment meant for healthy aging including an ab crunch/leg lift equipment, steps, ladder bars, pull ups bars and a hand cycle machine. The ladder bars can be used for many exercises as well as stretching before or after a run around the park!

2021 REAL ESTATE PREDICTIONS BY TEAM LEHMAN

We have never looked forward to a New Year as much as this one. Hopefully, we will soon be able to hug family and friends again, go see movies, travel and eat out. As far as real estate goes, here is what you can expect in the new year.

1. Inventory will remain low. Buyers are having a tough time getting houses right now and we don’t expect that to change in the coming months. Buyers need to be prepared to move quickly when they find the right house which includes having a pre-approval letter in hand to present to sellers at the time they make the offer. It also helps to find out what houses are about to come on the market and be the first in the door. It is not unusual for houses in our area to sell within a day. Real estate agents can put you on listing alerts so you can get real time information when a house gets listed. 2. House prices will continue to rise.In October 2020, existing home prices grew by 16% compared to last year—rising to a national median of well over $300,000! This marks more than 100 straight months of year-over-year price gains. For sellers, this is more good news but buyers need to be careful. The best advice to limit your house payment to no more than 25% of your monthly take-home pay. This payment includes principal, interest, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if your down payment is lower than 20%, private mortgage insurance (PMI). Plus, don’t forget to consider homeowner’s association (HOA) fees when preparing your budget.

3. Mortgage Rates will remain low. The average mortgage interest rate for a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to 2.31% in November 2020—the lowest it’s been since Freddie Mac started reporting nearly 30 years ago! And now economists think interest rates will continue to hover around 3% in 2021. 4. More and more people will move to the suburbs and countrySince working from home will continue to be a trend, more people are looking for land and comfort away from urban areas especially in the South. Houses in the suburbs in southern states spend less time on the market than do urban homes. Home offices are now highly desirable as well as outdoor entertaining spaces.

5. Whether you are buying or selling, it is still a good idea to use a real estate agent.

While the internet has made it easy to search for homes on-line, there is much more to buying and selling a home than clicking through a web site. The reality is that the process is an emotional rollercoaster — a study of 2,000 homebuyers by Homes.com found that the home buying process brings one-third of people to tears. A good agent can connect you to the right lenders, contractors, lawyers and inspectors all of whom you will need to complete the process. When selling a home, an agent can help you make sure you stay safe and that only qualified buyers are entering your home.

Stay healthy everyone and Happy New Year! Susan Lehman

UM RANKS HIGH FOR ON-CAMPUS AND ONLINE OFFERINGS

The University has been named one of the top accredited higher education institutions in the state for its mix of on-campus and online degree programs.

EDsmart.org recently released its list of the “Best online and on-campus colleges in Alabama,” and UM placed in the top five in the state and was the highest-ranking university in central Alabama. UM’s high ranking was based on performance across three National Center for Education Statistics categories: affordability, student satisfaction and student outcomes.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has significantly broadened its online offerings in its undergraduate and graduate programs.

EDsmart praised UM for its small average class size for undergraduates, private-university feel and its mix of hybrid and fully online graduate degree programs.

“We are proud to again be designated as one of Alabama’s top universities for online and on-campus delivery of academic programs,” said UM President Dr. John W. Stewart III. “The world is changing, and we are meeting the needs of our students with valuable, creative and nimble delivery of courses in multiple modalities that are user-friendly and stimulating. Credit goes to our academic leadership and faculty, who keep Montevallo ever vibrant and relevant for the students we serve.”

LITTLE FREE PANTRY IS WELL USED “Take what you need, leave what you can.” That simple thought stands behind the Little Free Pantry at the corner of Oak and Plowman (in front of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and across from Montevallo High School). If you or your family are hungry, help yourself. If you have spare food, think about sharing. The Little Free Pantry, which looks like a miniature church, is always open.

Little Free Pantries have sprung up across the country as part of a grassroots movement that seeks to address hunger and food insecurity. The LFP movement describes itself as neighbors helping neighbors, offering a community solution to an immediate and local need.

Supplies are always welcome. Leave non-perishable food items (canned goods, dried milk, cereal, crackers, boxed pasta, and so on). Hungry? Just help yourself.

The Little Free Pantry is sponsored by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and supported by the people of Montevallo. Montevallo Presbyterian Church also has a food pantry in front of the Forbes House at 820 Vine St.

CARMICHAEL LIBRARY AWARDED $50K TECHNOLOGY GRANT

Carmichael Library has been awarded a nearly $50,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services grant to make its offerings more accessible to remote users.

The agency recently awarded the grants to support the role of museums and libraries in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. UM was one of 68 institutions selected from 1,701 applications nationwide. UM Digital Media and Emerging Technologies Librarian Michael Price is the project director.

The grant will allow Carmichael Library to purchase Chromebooks, portable battery packs, hotspots, iPads and Wacom tablets.

CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWSMayor’s Message...

RUSTY NIX, MAYOR

STATE OF THE CITYMontevallo, oh how beautiful you are...especially around Christmas. People tell me all the time how beautiful our town is and I tell them this came from many years of planning. The visionand upgrade of our downtown was born from the planning of Streetscapes and to the forming Main Street Montevallo by the last three administrations. The implementation of Main Street Montevallo is what kick started our downtown into taking shape and becoming the magical holiday display we now enjoy.

Covid-19 continues to have a nasty impact on our nation but we didn’t let it dampen the Christmas Spirit in Montevallo. The City continued with tradition by celebrating the holiday season with the City Christmas Tree lighting with members of the City Council and the Main Street Board of Directors on December 1st and the annual Montevallo Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade on December 3rd. The Christmas Spirit was felt by all! Merry Christmas to all the citizens of Montevallo.

Now we turn the page to 2021. As we start the New Year, we are still closely watching the budget not knowing how Covid-19 will affect us down the road. Our net sales tax revenues continue to look good. December 2019 net sales tax revenues were $249,692.58 in comparison to September 2020 net sales tax revenues at $251,301.92. Business License renewals are starting to come in for 2021 and the city is seeing an uptick from contractors partly due to the two new Dollar General Stores being constructed within the city

and the expansion of the housing market in our area. The Citizens of Montevallo should do their part to help our small businesses/restaurants and grow our sales tax revenue by considering shopping local during the holidays and on into 2021. Shop Montevallo first!

We have several projects in the works. The Highway 25 Sidewalk Project will start at Luckys Supermarket and continue down the highway to Pic & Save with the new Dollar General being in between the two. This project will make Highway 25 a safe and walkable route. A Hotel, the Victory Building Project, George Daily Park, installation of Storm Shelters and the renovation of the Mahler House are just a few projects that are in the works. We have paid off fire trucks, purchased a new truck for the Fire Chief, purchased four new police cars and three Lucas Devices and a heart monitor for the Rescue Squad. We will continue to work hard to keep Montevallo ahead of the curve. Remember, “We are small but mighty”.

Thank you to the Citizens of Montevallo for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Mayor.

It’s official; we did it! We made it through 2020, and we are here in 2021.

Did you survive in 2020 or did you thrive in 2020? I imagine before you can make plans or dream of what 2021 will hold, you must ask yourself what to do differently, or the same, as you did in 2020. What is the saying? Doing the same thing in hopes of a different result is the definition of insanity. As long as we are still breathing, there is time to mix it up, live a little happier, laugh more, and forgive others, as we hope others will forgive us. What will you change?

No doubt, the needs of our military will change this year and every year after that. Veterans and their families live it every day, and every minute of that day. Things, situations, and lives change at the drop of a dime. Those in the military are trained to react to the life that is directly in front of us and to the many things that are unseen. As my husband always says, have a plan A, B, and C for when plans A and B didn’t work out. A plan is just a place in which to deviate. For some, this thought will bring anxiety. To those wearing the uniform, it brings comfort. When you have to start over, it won’t be with nothing. This time around, you will have experience on your side.

We didn’t expect or plan for 2020, but we got through it. As you prepare for 2021, stay flexible and know that sometimes the journey is worth more than the destination.
