Pastor’s Column – A Message from Fr. Eric Underwood
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:
Tomorrow, January 18 marks Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day but also the beginning of
the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
We will join with other Christians this week to
celebrate this year’s theme, “Abide in my love… you shall bear
much fruit.” (John 15:1-17) The Week of Prayer for Christian
Unity will conclude on Monday, January 25.
Gracious Lord, we pray for all the members of your
holy Church, that all may abide in you and you in
them, that they may be one in your love and bear much
fruit. We also pray for the world, that all may come to
believe in your love for them by the fruit of our witness.
We know that our divisions are a source of scandal to
your world, and we know that in love we are called to
unite as one in the vine and the branches. Help us we
pray, to love, to forgive, to seek justice and to be your
prophetic voice in the world. May your grace effect
growth of good fruit among us, that our world may
realize peace. We ask all this in the name of Jesus,
your Son, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, One
God, forever and ever. Amen
Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children:
January 22nd has been designated by the Church as a special
day of prayer. Prayer for the dignity of the human person is
essential in our world today, especially for the most vulnerable
(the unborn). A society that will not respect even the most
precious and fragile, cannot respect the dignity of others.
The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v.
Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude
what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However,
we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time
and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of
faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373,
designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance,
called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn
Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America,
January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday)
shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full
restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of
penance for violations to the dignity of the human person
committed through acts of abortion.”
As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the
penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. I
encourage you to observe this day in prayer and participate in
Mass that day if you are able. Together, let us pray for the
sanctity of human life.

PARISH MINISTRIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Adult Faith Formation Column
(Sue Wilhelm) Dear Friends,
Our readings remind us that we are Temples of the Holy
Spirit. That the Lord calls us and that as we follow Jesus,
we are shown where He dwells! Within us! In our
communities! In our world! That is a very hopeful
message in light of the chaos we seem to experience in our
world, and especially our nation these days.
The Psalm response must be our response: Here I am,
Lord; I come to do your will. The question then must
be, “What, O Lord, is your will for me?” We cannot
take the easy way out and presume we know the
Lord’s will. It takes a willingness to come before
God with open hands and heart and mind. St.
Ignatius calls that interior freedom—not being
attached to the outcome, only to God. Then allowing
God to lead us in living the life of Love we are called
to. For each of us that will look a bit different, but
always it includes, a deepening of faith, of hope and
of love. Always, a deep love of God, a commitment
to prayer and service to all our brothers and sisters in
Christ. Let us turn to the Lord, and seek His will.

This Sunday’s Gospel reflection…John 1:35-42 What are you looking for? (John 1:38)
Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, but he knew
that John wasn’t the Messiah—and that’s who he was
looking for. Let’s reflect on this Gospel passage to give
us insight into our own searching and finding.
Have you ever asked yourself that question? (“What
are you looking for?”) We all experience a longing at
times—and we might not even know why. We may try to
satisfy that inner ache with something fleeting, and it may
satisfy us for a time. But the longing always returns,
because what we are looking for can’t be found outside of
us. We are searching for God.
“Come and you will see” (John 1:39). We have to be
willing to take a step in faith and accept this invitation
from Jesus to spend some time with him. Jesus might be
inviting us to speak with him in Eucharistic Adoration or
to delve more deeply into the scriptures. He might want
us to find a brother or sister in Christ to guide and
accompany us. But if we don’t take that first step, we
won’t be able to “see” him.
“Jesus, help me to see that only you can satisfy the
deepest desires of my heart.”
