When I originally sat down to write my letter

introducing this magazine my mind began to

drift onto thoughts regarding my family. I’ve

been married for 11 years and have two kids.

Like most folks, my wife and I are very much

overworked and underpaid. The concept

of this magazine was conceived while on

vacation last summer. The only time in our

lives that we truly relax and enjoy ourselves is

when we take our annual trip to the beach. I

had never gone to the beach prior to getting

married but my wife has gone every year

since she was a child. The first time I went to

the beach it changed my life forever.

During my first visit to the beach, I spent

several hours just sitting on the beach

watching the waves. I was immediately

hooked and made a promise that we would

return to a beach at least once every year.

Hard work and sacrifice has made this week

long trip possible for 6 straight years and has

made my family stronger in the process.

The journey into creating this magazine

began by pondering about what could help

my wife and I cope with the many trials of

parenthood during the other 51 weeks of the

year upon returning home from vacation.

We hope the launch of this magazine is the

answer to that question.

Thank You. Sounds easy enough, right?

After all, it’s just two words, two syllables.

For so long, these significant words have

been forgotten, by so many. Maybe, some

humans forget to say, ”thank you” because

they are under the impression that the world

owes them something. Maybe, it is because

they get so caught up in their day that they

don’t live in the moment long enough to

acknowledge when someone is actually

doing something for them.

Saying Thank You:A Forgotten Art Form

Sabrina Carruthers

first word

Page 11: January 15th Issue

Well, my husband Brian and I had a true

reality check when we were teaching our two

year old, Chelsea, basic expressions such as

please, hello, excuse me, thank you, etc. Our

frustration grew as she started using all of the

expressions except “Thank You”. We could

not figure out why this was happening. We did

not know if the word “thank” was too hard to

pronounce. However, Brian and I quickly out

ruled that excuse when Chelsea articulated

the word thumb. We were literally stumped

until one day we voiced our frustrations to

Brian’s grandmother. She calmly replied,

“How often does that baby hear the two of

you say, “Thank You”? What a Wake-Up Call!

Children learn from their greatest examples: parents. In order for our kids to say, “Thank You”, they must first hear us continuously use the expression in our homes on a daily basis. When you show appreciation, you can put a smile on the face of someone and make a difference to his or her day.

The Pattersons are proud parents ofJamal-Rashad and Rashika Patterson.

I met Shirley & George in the spring of

2008 in McDonough, Georgia during the

time that Jamal-Rashard was one of the top

football recruits in the country. The thing

that impressed me most about them was

how emphatic they were about education

and community involvement. “Academics

are Always the top priority for our family,”

says Shirley. George has a PH.D and serves

a Civil Engineer in Henry County and Shirley

manages the day-to-day duties for the family

as a homemaker.

They both served as members of PTA and on

the Boosterclub for football and track.

I watched as both parents helped with

everything from game day concessions to

working the chains on the field. The humility

displayed by them is unbelievable and is a

trait that I hope to increase for myself this

year. As we begin a new year, we would just

like to take a moment to say “thank you” to

both of these outstanding parents.

If you or someone you know encompass all of the qualities of being an outstanding parent, then

drop us a few lines about yourself or the individual(s) that you would like to nominate. We will

pick the best email and feature the parent and or parents in our upcoming issue. Please email

The most critical window of time for any child

is from 5pm to 10pm. Most negative habits are

formed during this time period. These bad habits

include watching too much TV, eating junk food

and lack of exercise. The price for after-school

The truth about vegetables is some of

them taste awful but our kids need at least

3 servings of veggies per day. Like most

parents, the struggle to get my son to

consume vegetables was becoming a lose/

lose scenario. Just when I was about to

relinquish all hope, the light bulb went off.

In order to get my son to eat more vegetables,

I had to get down right crafty. I began using

blenders, juicers and food processors to

create vegetable purees in order to sneak all

of the good stuff into my child’s daily meals.

The result: a happy and healthy kid.

START AT BREAKFAST

Breakfast is the most important meal of the

day. Kids are unable to perform at their best

without starting the day off right. Therefore,

the first attack should begin at breakfast by

including a vegetable puree AND a fruit and

vegetable juice into your child’s diet. My little

boy absolutely loves turkey bacon, scrambled

egg whites and grits. I use the scrambled eggs

as the conduit for slipping in the first veggie

puree of the day….cauliflower. This veggie is

an excellent source of Vitamin C and helps

kids resist infections. The puree is produced

simply by blending steamed cauliflower

florets and about 3 tablespoons of water

(more or less, depending on your preference

of the puree’s texture and consistency) into

the food processor. The attack begins by 16 | january ‘10

Cauliflower PureePrep: Cut off florets and throw away core.

Cook: Steam florets for about 8 to 10 minutes

Puree: Using a food processor or blender,

blend cauliflower florets and a few teaspoons

of water for about 2 minutes. This process

should produce a smooth, creamy texture.

NOTE: Purees can be incorporated into any meal using almost all vegetables. Choose the vegetable of your choice steam or roast for the normal amount of time and blend in the food processor or blender for a couple of minutes. You can immediately add the puree to your child’s meal or freeze them for another time.

Scrambled Eggs RecipePrep: 4 minutes

Total: 7 minutes

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

2 large eggs

4 large egg whites

¼ cup reduced-fat sour cream

2 tbsp. 2% white milk

¼ cup cauliflower puree

2 tablespoons grated Parmesan

Pinch of salt

1 tsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

(used to coat the pan)

Step 1: Using a large bowl, whisk together

the eggs, egg whites, sour cream, milk,

cauliflower puree, Parmesan, and salt.

Step 2: Coat a large nonstick skillet with olive

oil, then set the pan to medium-high heat.

Add the egg mixture, reduce the heat to low

and cook, stirring frequently until the eggs

are scrambled (about 2 to 3 minutes).

adding the blended puree into a killer recipe for scrambled eggs that also incorporates Parmesan

cheese and reduced fat sour cream. (Yummy!) I usually make my son eat his eggs and grits first.

Since he loves the turkey bacon, he receives it last as a good source of protein. I also give him

a fruit & vegetable juice blend. My juicer of choice is the Jack Lalanne’s Power Juicer that I

purchased from Macy’s. The blend consists of celery, apples and carrots. No need to peel and

cut. If the fruits and vegetables are small enough, I can simply add them to the juicer. Voilá! My

son is ready to begin a productive day with a healthy, balanced, and nutritious breakfast.

Want to get away from the hustle and bustle

of everyday life without leaving the city? The

answer is Atlantic Station. This 138-acre of

land offers lodging, entertainment, dining,

shopping and much more.

Start by booking a couple of nights at the

Twelve, a chic and contemporary boutique-

style hotel planted in the heart of Atlantic

Station. The Twelve affords couples the

experience of staying in a luxury urban

condominium without the exaggerated

prices. The suites at TWELVE offer the casual

comforts of home: lush bedding, a flat-screen

TV, a full-size kitchen equipped with stainless

steel appliances and a separate living room

area. The highly trained and professional hotel

staff will make your stay a memorable one.

Next, choose from Atlantic Station’s venues

designed for your entertainment needs. You

have the option of taking in a movie, bowling,

viewing an exhibit or simply strolling through

the quad. Atlantic Station’s Regal Cinemas

stadium-seated theater presents all of the

latest movie releases daily. If you aren’t in

the mood to be sedentary, then the Ten Pin

Alley, an upscale bowling and billiard facility,

will evoke your drive for activity. Another

interesting option offered at Atlantic Station

is “Dialog in the Dark”. Within this unique

exhibit, visitors are led by visually impaired

guides through various darkened galleries

designed to recreate everyday experiences.

This nationally recognized exhibit has been

extended through May 31, 2010.

Last but not least, choose from Atlantic

Station’s plethora of dining options to satisfy

your palate. Whether your taste is American,

Chinese, Mexican or Cajun cuisine, Atlantic

Station does more than deliver. One of my

favorite restaurants to visit is Copeland’s

It is a new year and the time to focus on

getting back in to shape. The holidays are

over! During the Christmas break, you made

a promise to yourself. Remember saying, “I

am going to start working out in January” as

you inhaled the last bite of red velvet cake

that Aunt Lorraine baked. Well, January is

here. It is time for new beginnings. What

better way to start off the New Year than by

honoring the promise you made to yourself

to become healthy in 2010?

Join a Gym

When seeking a workout facility, there are

a few vital elements to consider. The gym

should be convenient to your home (no more

than 15 minutes away). It should also offer

daycare services for the kids making it more

convenient to work out. In addition, the

fitness center should have sturdy and updated

equipment. Take full advantage of the “free

week” that most workout spots propose.

This will allow you to gain the experience

of using the facility before committing to a

contract. If you are not familiar with using the

gym equipment or are not sure of the correct

exercises to do, then working out with a

trainer may be a good option. (Note: Before

starting any workout regimen, it is important

to consult your physician.)

Purchase Good Workout Attire

It is absolutely imperative that you are dressed

appropriately during your workout session.

Your clothing should be comfortable, offer

a free range of movement and be stylish. I

know you are wondering why it is important

to look good when going to the gym. It is

simple. When you look your best, you do

your best. Wearing frumpy attire will only

make you feel unattractive. Therefore, your

desire to work out will decrease. A good pair

of sneakers is also required. Try the latest Air

Max + 2009 Running Shoes. You will feel like

you are walking on air. Sure, the shoes are a

bit pricey. But, if you can afford them, they

are well worth it!

Keep Yourself Hydrated with Water

This act along will aid in losing weight. Water

is an essential nutrient to your daily existence.

Some of the benefits of consuming water

include reducing hunger, combating aches

and pains, boosting your immune system,

increasing mental sharpness and hydrating

your skin. This is the easiest and most

beneficial step you can take in gaining true

wellness. When you begin working out, you

want to make sure that you stay hydrated.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Warming up is the phase at the beginning of

a workout session. Cooling down refers to

the period at the end of an exercise session.

Warming up involves a period of low-impact

exercises that prepare your body for the

rigorous aspects of your workout. It can

reduce the risk of injury. The cooling down

phase tends to involve a short period of low-

impact exercises, which gradually return

the body to its ‘resting state’. The cooling

down phase is believed to reduce the risk of

muscular soreness, which may occur the day

after an exercise session. It can also reduce

the risk of fainting or collapsing after an

exercise session. Both components are key

to a successful workout.

Change Your ThermostatMaking simple changes like setting the

temperature to 72 degrees could reduce your

monthly energy use by as much as 20 percent.

You can also program units to raise and lower

temps during the day. The Ecobee touch

screen model will allow homeowners to make

changes at home or on the go via the web.

Replace Your LightsCompact Florescent light bulbs (CFLs) on

average use only about 20% of the same

energy that standard light bulbs use and cost

about the same. These low energy bulbs also

last on average about 8 to 10 times longer. In

these times of environmental responsibility,

this translates into better energy practices

and big savings.

Get a New TolietThe toilet is the biggest user of water in the

household (it also wastes the most water).

Older model toilets use 3.5 to 5.5 gallons

per flush compared with newer models that

use anywhere from zero to 1.6 gallons per

flush. Some metro area counties are offering

rebates for purchasing these, which could

mean a FREE unit in addition to getting a

lower bill.

Small Do-it-Yourself projects could mean big saving in 2010

honeydew Going Greens = Savings

Looking for ways to save a few bucks and save the environment at the same time?

The concept of going green has risen to new heights with the addition of products that are

actually designed to help you save money and the environment.

Here are a few simple D.I.Y. projects that could yield big savings this year.

It is first and ten in the 10 and under

championship football game, your son has

just run in the winning touchdown and it

is then that you can envision little Johnny

going to a top school with a full athletic

scholarship. We have all been in this position,

whether it is athletically or academically,

we all like to believe that our children will

be awarded college scholarships to attend

top rated schools. In most cases this will not

come to pass and it is our job as parents

to give our children a fighting chance. As

college costs are continuing to rise, there

are a few things that we can do to prepare

children and ourselves for the future. Of

course we should continue to motivate and

assist our children with their academics

and athletics and be grateful if any funding

can come from their achievements but

taking the proper steps to start saving for

college early will ease the costs later on. A

529-college savings plan is ideal for parents

and grandparents to contribute towards

the costs of their children’s education. 529

plans are investments that are designed to

grow tax-free as long as all funds are used

for school costs including housing, books,

and tuition. These dollars are invested based

on the age of your child but also have many

other options depending on your investment

needs. In most cases the 529 plan is named

for one beneficiary however can be turned

over to someone else if the beneficiary

does not attend school or does not end up

needing all the funds that have been saved.

529 plans can be started with as little as

25.00 in most cases, although all states have

a different plan to offer they all have many

similarities. These plans have auto draft from

a checking or savings account and some

even offer deposit options directly from

your payroll. If we stop to think about all the

fast food eaten in a month or useless toys

bought to pacify our children, I think that

most of us would agree that a 529 plan is a

much better place to put our thirty or forty

dollars each month.

Going back to college, as an adult can be a

very intimidating and rewarding experience all

rolled into one. For many, earning that “piece

of paper” can make a significant difference

in their professional and/or personal life.

However, the thought of returning to school

can be challenging because of your role as

a parent and spouse. Don’t be discouraged.

There are so many resources to help you on

your journey to becoming a student again.

You may find that the road is smoother, the

second time around.

BENEFITS OF GOING BACK TO SCHOOL:

• Career Advancement in Current Position or

Career Change

• Complete a Degree that you never finished

• Increase your Opportunity to Make a

Higher Wage

• Motivate and Encourage Your Children to

Pursue Higher Learning

FAQs OF ADULT COLLEGE APPLICANTS:

What are the Entrance Requirements? As an

adult, special prerequisites may apply to you.

You may not be required to take the SAT or

other standardized testing. Consult with the

college handbook or college advisor of the

schools that you are considering for

more information.

Is there a special program for adults

going back to school? Most colleges

offer continuing education programs.

These programs can offer an assortment

of services such as accelerated degree

curriculums, flexible schedules and credit

for prior life experience.

Can I transfer credit from another college? If

you took college courses in the past, then you

may be able to transfer those credits to your

new school. You will need to get a copy of

your transcript from your previous school and

submit it with your application to the school

of your choice.

What if I am unable to attend classes in a

traditional college setting? No worries. If

this is your scenario, then online courses

are the best option for you. Online courses

are great because they afford you the

opportunity to work towards a degree

without leaving the comforts of your home.

A computer with Internet capability is the

minimum requirement.

Would you like to see a particular topic covered in the Options

section focusing on colleges, degrees, or careers? Please email

us at [email protected]. Your topic may be discussed in one of

our future publications.

Can I afford to go back to college? Every

school offers some form of financial

aid, which includes grants, loans and

scholarships. The financial aid process can

be a confusing and frustrating experience.

So, contact the college’s financial aid office

or for more information on financial aid, visit

www.gsfc.org.

Returning to college can be demanding;

however, the rewards far outweigh the

challenges. There may be times that your

family is not understanding of the time that

you will need to allot for school. Take it as a

compliment: they miss you. It is imperative

that you do not let anyone or anything

discourage you from finishing. Remember,

your reason for returning to school in the first

place. Let your motivation carry you to the

finish line: your college degree. It doesn’t

matter how old you are or how long it’s been

since you opened a textbook. You are not

alone - several adults before you have made

the decision to return and are reaping the

benefits today.

Metro Atlanta has some of the best

and worse schools in the country.

I learned this first hand after

beginning a search for a new home

during this past year. My search for

a home began with visits to sites like

www.greatschools.net and www.

schooldigger.com. These sites rank

schools based on the following

criteria: Principal Leadership,

Teacher Quality, Extracurricular

Activities, Parent Involvement,

Safety, Discipline and Test Scores.

I think its fair to say that all of the

aforementioned areas are important

but, the most amazing thing I

noticed after researching these sites

and actually visiting some schools

was the importance of parental

involvement. Every school has a

Parent Teacher Association or PTA.

In my opinion as a parent this is the

most important club you could you

could ever join. This organization is

what determines a good school or

a bad one, not the kids. A strong

PTA is the cornerstone of a strong

community and actually works

indirectly in maintaining property

values and creating opportunities for

local businesses.

We would like to make a challenge

to every parent (with school aged

children or not) to join your local

PTA. Metro area schools are in

desperate need of parent volunteers

and we, as adults, must step up and

help. If you are willing to join your

PTA after reading this article, drop us

an email at [email protected] and

give a shout out to your local PTA.
